Hello,

I read some statement here pretty recently that AOS or MOS "lack DTP so can be no more than hobby OSES".

Well I don't think so. It depends how much does one actually own his/her personal computer.

I like the model of having a computer in the work, having plausible config, apps etc. But as long as I'm home, NO MAN can force anything into my computer, unless he/she PAYS ME WELL for it. I have Mac Mini with OSX for example, some time ago I purchased iWork (Apple's most recent office suite). Later on I bought a PC notebook that has windows (and linux) on it. Since then, numerous people tried to force me to produce MS Office-compliant (100% whilst iWork gives you some 98%) documents. I was replying every time: "You want an MS doc file? Get me a MS Office then!". And I'm not having MS Office till now.

I think that's the appropriate attitude, I also gave numerous reasons in my work that I will not under any circumstances, bring on my notebook to my work, because it is my home computer. If I am to use it in work, I NEED AN EXTRA notebook for working purposes. Or a raise.

So if someone, not necessarily on this very forum or any other alike, calls AmigaOS4.1 or MorphOS2.4 "a hobby-only os", I will strongly disagree giving above argumentation but not only.

As in my Mac OSX example. I need a browser, music, movie player, some editor and minor tools - that's all. I also use skype and that's what I require from my non-hobby desktop OS. Both systems deliver that, plus refurbished nostalgia and much much more. They develop pretty fast now and so do the applications.

So to summarize, I got MorphOS (I'm lucky because I had mini already and no much cash) and consider it my fully functional (substitute) OS. I couldn't tolerate calling this hobby-only because it is simply not true. Alas if I was forced to use in my work, I would surely fall into technical limitations here. But please, do not confuse some business use from home/desktop use. No one here wants to talk anybody into AOS/MOS potential as a business machine, right?

Please give constructive pros'n'cons'

DD

@DiskDoctor

I also don't like the term "hobby OS". It's my main and only home OS. I do (and can do) a lot more than performing my hobby on it, being programming or playing retro games or whatever.

I use it for all home computer applications such as managing my digicam pictures, it's my main music player, all e-mail and surfing including but not limited to job searching, online shopping, bank business, etc. I could watch movies on it but I prefer the big screen in the living room.

@DiskDoctor

I havent read the full text but im totally with you. I dont call AmigaOS hobby. I mean there are alot of my friends on pc/mac/linux that uses their machine to surf the net and play some games. Some ofcourse make music too but their music is just a hobby. So does this mean its hobby OS for them too ?

So if you call amiga a hobby os then window/macos/linux is also a hobby and if you earn money on it, it isnt hobby. That would be logical. I mean AmigaOS is still developed and costs as much as or more then the other OS'es.

I use my amiga as much as my friends uses theirs with other OS. Sure they do have more apps/games but still their OS is updated so is ours.

however a big negative thing with AmigaOS is the delay between updates. For other systems their is daily updates. So if you have a bug somewhere it would probably be fixed in not to long time and you get the fix. With amiga you have to wait years.

As the amigaos is smaller then others and less devs i dont say i would like to have daily updates but at least monthly or every second month updates. It doesnt need to have new stuff planned for next big update but it should have bugfixes, for example the usb filesystem (crossdos) bug. Gfx bugfixes for SAM, usb2 for sam and other cards for A1 etc. Updated jfx filesystem etc etc.

This is the most thing i hate amigaOS for and thats for waiting for bugfixes to arrive with next big update. Its what makes me often think to leave amiga even if i love it. I mostly use usb but on amiga its been impossible since previous update. Im thankfull for the hotfix that came with other bugfixes but thats not enough. Theres Sam bugs, Peg2 bugs etc.

More smaller hotfixes please and i think most people would be happier with amigaos4. At least me :)

Long live amiga

EDIT:
Forgot to say Amiga is my main computer. I do everything from surfing to make music and upload videos (pic+audio to mp4) to youtube. I do have a pc 500mhz (my systers old) and its in the wardrobe. I take it out only when i need to update my HW synthesizers firmware and thats max 4 times / year. My mobilephone i update at work on pc. I do have ps3 for games and watching movies and listen to music. I have an xbox1 for watching movies that the ps3 cant show but that i will replace later with something can play HD movies (more cpu). Some mediaplayer or a laptop.
So for me amigaos4 is not a hobby system.

Ok if i had classic i would call it hobby as the system isnt updated and the HW is slow. And lack of more modern browsers. So if there wouldnt be os4/mos like today i would probably run mac/win today.

If it means anything i have earned some money before when playing live @ club, both classic (a500/a1200/a4000) and amigaone. I also played for some months ago but i said no to cash. It was more fun for me and i got free drinks for the night :) But even if i had not earned any money and if i didnt play at clubs i wouldnt call it a hobby system. I mean my friends dont call their systems as hobby. I do pay stuff with my bankaccount and everything else more important.

@DiskDoctor

During the last two month I seriously used MorphOS to do the job I got nice a nice ammount of cash for. I could have done it with other OSes, too, but I did it partially with MorphOS.
Is MorphOS a "professional OS" now?

@DiscDoctor

I always did professional work on my AmigaOS systems for my job. I did so on my classic 68k systems and I still do on my SAM. And it is my hobby to play around with OS4.1 and have much fun with it. So it's a professional hobby OS.

@DiskDoctor

One hobby OS they aren't because to be it the OS will has free, unstable, the people work in drivers, etc., etc. as for example any PC OS, but here I don't say that AROS be it, please don't turn my words. But Amiga OS/MorphOS/AROS are one hobby not as OS as system to develop software, hardware, or you own tools/programs etc. in you free time and free as for example my case. But we don't say that the our OS is one hobby OS because it ins't true.

That sounds a rather arbitrary definition.

I work for a rather specialised software company, a lot of our customers run professional setups on the top of MS-Dos6.22, I kid you not, if the OS breaks, they loose money and start to complain so that's professional in my book.

Dos is of course lacking Memory protection, and quite a few other things too...

Yeah i know, Win9X didn't have memory protection either.

But i agree with you, lacking memory protection doesn't make them hobby oses.
But MorphOS/OS4 are hobby OSes imo.

I think that Windows 98 is now a hobby OS, I have no problem using a hobby OS, infact I rather like it to be honest.

@DiskDoctor

How many professional applications for HD video edit /audio recording and sequencing do you have for those "non hobby" operating systems?

Name them!

I still use Amigas for video work; ( Vlab Motion ) and Multi Media stuff over live video in real time
in my friends store.

I dont charge for it, but i suppose I could, so maybe not a hooby project.

@itix

I'm not saying it is a problem, I only say it is not true in a narrow sense. It is a hobby OS plus an os being any other desktop OS' substitute.

You've got gradation here: hobby - personal - professional. In most cases professional OS, whatever it means, can be used home (I'm not getting into stuff like OS/400 here...) My point is that the list is backward compatible, but not forward (but see exceptions above also). So calling an OS a hobby-os in most cases implies it can be not used in more serious purposes.

C= is hobby, snes is hobby (bad example maybe), win3.11 is, stuff like that. But NOT AmigaOS4.x, not MorphOS2.

Hobby means fun only, personal means productivity / non-fun activities.

@fryguy

Please clarify youf view, I asked for no "feelings", just reasons.

...professional... HD video edit... audio recording and sequencing....

Do you really do those things at home? What do you do for living then???

Quote:

Please list people from AW.net+MOZONE+A.org that need those at home. Could be nicks only.

You thoroughly misunderstood. Those apps you're naming are either professional or for an artist. Both seem to be professon related, assumptions here are AOS4/MOS aren't hobby-oses-only unless you do your job at home. Most people just don't. Or if they do, they don't blame their beloved-to-be platform for not allowing them to earn on using it professionally.

Or did I miss something?

But maybe that will change in the future, who knows..

But again, we're not defending "OS4: the professionals' choice" clause here!

Don't blame OS4 (or MorphOS2) for not satisfying your professional needs for the sake!!! Give'em some time Please ask yourself a question - besides your working routines, is there anything that you really wish but cannot do on your AmigaOS4? Non-professional doesn't automatically equal a hobby, there's "home computer" in between... can't you see that?
