Hi,

I got a Census letter in the mail yesterday.

After seeing it, I was inspired to ask the Amiga Community the same sort of questions and report back;

Having thought about it a bit more, its not a one man job, so;
A) How can this be kick started & kept alive
B) What questions should we be asking
C) How will we tally and report back
D) What will we be able to assert, gain or understand from this yearly exercise

I think it would be very helpful to know as precisely as possible the current state of the Amiga universe.

Some of the data would help sw/hw makers to know what to expect in terms of potential market, and it could come in really handy if all you have to do is consult a database to find who else also uses video card XYZ or application XYZ to ask a question or have him/them test your latest driver.

Having people update their information once a year or whenever something changes would be enough.

More than a census though, it should simply be a database with fields for all the hardware, software, usage patterns, geographical location, and any other pertinent information the user wants to provide.

Interesting idea, it would be nice to try it.

But in my opinion, it should be kept as simple as possible and only should be made rarely enough to keep the interest.

I would say once a year max, but maybe every two years would be better. Then people would take it more seriously and wouldn't get bored to it. Things aren't moving that fast in amiga world anyway.

And which is absolutely necessary in my opinion, there shouldn't be too many questions. Only couple of basic checkmark questions.

Maybe for example:
Which Amiga systems do you have? (OS3.x or earlier, OS4, MorphOS, AROS, Amithlon, UAE, other)
How often do you use any of them? (daily, weekly, monthly, more rarely)

Maybe that could be enough. Then there wouldn't be any excuses for anyone that filling questionary would take too much time etc. It should be answerable from some webpage or maybe also with email.

People could then send the links to all those numerous idling friends we all have etc. At least I have _many_ amiga friends who don't participate any discussions on forums or other online media and thus won't get counted on these other estimations people have tried to make. And I know they won't bother to answer these kinds of things too often... so remember that it shouldn't be made more than once a year _max_ :) And that same probably affects to occasional UAE users etc.. if we want to count them too (I think we should).

Most places census is in the 1 and 6 years. I know we're going to get a census in 2011 and the last one was 2006.

Could be the case? Do you know which countries don't have an annual census.

Gentlemen, I think a census is a great idea.

While I agree with jPV on keeping it simple, as stated by AlexC it would also give hardware/software/developers/marketeers a (much needed?) overview around our market, so why not add mandatory questions and optional ones.

Could be spread/advertised on several sites, not only 100% Amiga focused ones (such as OSNews, Ars Technica, even social networks..) kind of a small PR activity.

Overall a 7,723 new Amiga users, or Amiga users coming back...
I think that's approx a 30% growth, but as NutsAboutAmiga stated if you assume
each user has 1 account on each site, the growth math will be a bit scewed or out of whack.

Number of MorphOS licenses sold seems to be publicly known. Users noticed that invoice number seems to be just ordinal number of license. While never confirmed by the MorphOS Team, it hasn't been denied as well. Then there is a thread on MorphZone forum, where users report voluntarily their invoice numbers. According to the thread there are at least 1165 MorphOS 2.x licenses sold.
