Thanks for putting up the video, you've been to a lot of trouble with these videos.
It's unfortunate that the material is such lousy quality. I thought at least I'd be able to see what Steven looks like, but he's just a silhouette with rude people walking in front of him and talking loudly in the background.
One can only hope that next time the organisers will at least get a quiet room with decent lighting and audio for the presenters. This year's results are abysmal.

To see what Steve looks like, go to his presentatiions at last year's Amiwest Show at
http://blip.tv/file/2777153 or http://blip.tv/file/2751322
or go to his presentation at Amiwest Show 2008 at

In the original DV, there is a finer gradation between dark and light where you can pick up details of Steve's features. (How artsy!) However, when compressed to MPEG-4, the fine gradation is gone, replaced with more sudden dark and light areas.
I could have gone with manual exposure and brightened up Steve's scenes, but then I would have to turn down the exposure when shooting the projection screen (there would have been a lot of back and forth adjusting as I panned from Steve to screen and then back to screen). In the end, I made the decision that what was being presented on the screen was the most important and left it on auto exposure, thus keeping the screen bright and Steve in the shadows.
In the best of all worlds, it would have been nice to have two hi-def camcorders -- one to film the presenter (with correct exposure on him/her) and one on the screen. Then in editing, I would have cut from one to the other. One can dream. :)
With one camera "in the wild", you make do with what there is... whatever the conditions are... whatever the setting presents to you.

Thanks a million for all these videos!
Even though I was there the whole time, by watching the videos I can clearly see that I missed bits and pieces from the presentations, either from being distracted or too tired, so it's great to be able to watch it again.
@Tony
Maybe Robert could record the sound straight out of the PA system? In any case I'm hoping that next year they'll use the partition in the room to isolate the presentations from the exhibition tables as even in person it was hard to understand everything with all the background noise.

I don't think you have to go to the expense of two cameras. One would be sufficient, if you had a light on the presenter to make him/her the same brightness as the screen. At the same time, you would need to rid yourself of the bright lights immediately behind the presenter.
Anyway, it's water under the bridge. Thanks again for doing your best in difficult circumstances.

I second that. I know not every topic is of interest to everyone, but so much background talking was disrespectful to the presenters.

| @RobertB Huge thanks for taking the time to record everything and post it online!
Everything I presented was from the Modern Amiga Programming article on my web site. Constructive feedback would be greatly appreciated so please email me directly or use the contact form. I'm a bit surprised nobody seemed to notice the MAP acronym...
P.S. I just posted some interesting REBOL 3 news there as well. _________________ ExecSG Team Lead |

Awesome. I asked Carl about Rebol use in enterprise environments, and he had some cool examples from the tech industry. I also asked about LDAP support, but the two extensions on the Rebol web site are no longer available. Not sure if I want to spring for a dev kit and write my own just to see if Rebol would be a good fit. _________________ Sam440ep-flex 733 MHz/1 GB RAM/Radeon 9250/AmigaOS4.1 Update 2 borked A1200/Blizzard1260+SCSI-IV/Z4+MediatorZIV/Deneb/Voodoo3/CatweaselMk3 more borked A1200/MBX1200z/Indivision A500/clockport/RRNet A600/A603 |

I'd rather not shine a glaring, bright light on the presenter. Quote:

Yes, that open exit door behind the presenters was a problem for the video. However, I didn't really have control of that, because people kept moving goods through it and used it for ventilation.
If I closed it, it just would be opened again, Robert Bernardo Fresno Commodore User Group http://videocam.net.au/fcug The Other Group of Amigoids http://www.calweb.com/~rabel1/ Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network http://www.sccaners.orgLast edited by RobertB on 11-Nov-2010 at 07:45 AM.

Hi,
We all know that many parts of the Amiga OS are obsolete by reading post here and there. The Amiga OS will evolve so my question is does the current API that we know of is there to stay or it will change dramatically in the midterm. Its not easy to bring new developer to the Amiga platform but if they have to learn the API (which is taking time) and then have to switch to another it'll be more than enough to stop writing software for the Amiga. Apple has done this (Carbon->Cocoa) but they warn developer that Carbon will be there just for the transition and they already had Cocoa. (because of NextStep).
So are we gonna see the same shift in the Amiga in the foreseeable future?
Thanks Kamel

There are no plans to change the API dramatically (e.g. moving to a C++ interface). The API is just evolving along with the OS itself as would be expected. New functions replace outdated design ideas as they should. Backwards compatibility is retained as much as it makes sense to do so.
If there is anything specific about the API that concerns you please feel free to write me directly and I'll look into it._________________ ExecSG Team Lead |
