Hi' ... my good old ViewSonic 17GA is going to blow in the very near future ... I need to use violence to make it work now, so it is time to buy a new one

I have been looking at some monitors, and what I need is a 17" TFT monitor ... I don't have too much money (need my money for my wedding and my future AmigaOne) ... have found one that I could buy, but would like to hear if some of you have tried it ...

This is the one I have looked at: Acer AL1721hm

Please help me

@hnl_dk

I want a 17 inch TFT too. I can't possibly have a 15 inch as I am partially sighted. Whats the average price range for a 17 inch one?

I can get this one for about 3400DKR ... about 310£ ... about 460EUR

EDIT: I need 17" ... bought my ViewSonic 17GA in 1996 ... couldn't use a 15" now

There is currently a cool TFT on dabs.co.uk. It's cheap at £249.00, resolution 1280x1024 and made by philips. ohh it also looks very nice too

No, it is not made by Phillips (they only made the LCD) ... it's an Atec Neoview AL170

Hmm what kind of violence is required to make it work I wonder.

Seriously though, I had a monitor that would start giving a messed up image until you hit it once or twice on the top with your fist.

It turned out to be a simple dry solder joint. (Warning : Monitors contain Lethal voltages even when switched off) If you know about these things it might be a simple fix.

But then again......What excuse would you have to buy that shiny new one then??

Decisions, decisions!

The picture gets to it's maximum ... maximum horisontal size ... maximum vertical size ... maximum pincushion ...

I need to hammer it at the side ... almost at the back to get it back to its right place ...

I think I'm going to buy it ... have found a review: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/?http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/reviews_story.php?id=56413
and it sounds good

there is also a good image of it:

I think it would look nice to my future microA1 case:

I've recently bought two 21" CRT monitors (Mitsubishi flat screen). They take a bit of space so I also got a new desk, and it still worked out much cheaper than 2 flat panels. One is connected to AGP card, second one to PCI, I'm not sure if there are any cards with support for two VGAs.

Personally I can't see any advantage in flat panels over CRTs (except for space), can you?

[RANT]
They don't flicker, do give sharper images, dont have convergence problems,don't have focus problems, don't give off X-Rays, cheaper to run (use less power), don't get as hot, don't suffer from magnetic fields like speakers being too close to the monitor, are a lot lighter to move around.

@doctorb

I completely agree with you, I'd rather buy a nice 21" CRT monitor than buy a smaller TFT monitor. TFT monitors do have a noticeably sharper picture than CRT monitors because they don't require the complex focusing techniques that CRT does, but their pin sharp focus isn't ALWAYS a good thing - it depends very much on your application. In general useage, pin sharp focus shows up all the impurities of an image, so if you're running a dithered background image or viewing anything which isn't full quality, your TFT will show it right up!

It's a little like when you buy one of those very very high quality stereo systems which costs thousands of pounds. They're able to reproduce EVERYTHING in the music and you actually find yourself being more aware of instruments in the music that you'd never even heard before on your standard £300 HIFI. But, unfortunately, if you listen to anything but a superb quality recording, the expensive HIFI picks out all the faults in the music and ends up sounding WORSE than the cheap, standard HIFI because of it.

Same thing with TFT V CRT, in my opinion.

The other advantage with TFT is that you don't need any of the geometry adjustments like you do with CRT based displays. All your lines are always straight. My TFT on my laptop doesn't even have any horizontal or vertical adjustments - whatever screen mode you put it in, the screen always appears in the centre and is always perfect!

That said, if I was given the choice between a 17" TFT and a 21" CRT, I'd definately get the 21" CRT because size is my main parameter when I'm looking for a new monitor. I also feel that CRT gives better results for general usage because of the problem I explained above. These days you can often find yourself viewing images which aren't of full quality (the internet being one example) and because of the pin sharp, flawless focussing of TFT, the images actually look better of my CRT monitor.

@AmigaOneProductions

My brother has a black Dell TFT screen, looks lovely and the picture is bright and crisp. If you move your eyes real quick whilst wiewing it u can see a flicker but its not noticeable using it. My 17 inch CRT monitor, which is branded Scott, a PC manufacturer, is incredibly dim even compared to my 1995 Acorn AKF 60 monitor.

I think I'll be having myself TFT!

Check out this site. They have customers reviews for each item they sell and sell the monitor your looking at. Besides that one they also have many more cheaper models you may want to look at if your on a tight budget

@BrianHoskins

Thanks Brian. I'm not exactly sure about the sharpness - I've compared a few monitors (middle to top of the range flat screen CRTs and TFTs) in the shop and they all looked similar (I don't have a perfect eye sight though). What discouraged me from actually getting the TFTs was very poor refreshment, it was especially evident when dragging windows (w/ contents), I could even see mouse trails (and I checked that mouse trail feature is turned off in control panel). In the end I had the impression that the flat screen CRT was simply better.
