@Drummerboy

Use Jabberwocky.. it can be confusing to setup in the beginning but you only have to do it once!

First, you need to setup an account on a server that supports the type of instant messaging you want to do. Check out the servers here:
Jabber.org Public Server List

I use 12jabber.org as that supports MSN and ICQ. I know it works, so if you want to use MSN, then try that one too. I cant quite remember how to setup an account, but I think you just enter a user id, followed by "@12jabber.org" (if you want to use the 12jabber.org server), and click Register. If the user id you selected isnt in use, your account will be created, then you can just login any time by selecting connect. However, if the user id you chose is being used by someone else already, then it will give an error message..

The rest should be easy to figure out.. let me know if you have any further problems.

Jabberwocky is the program to use. I'd like to add that for using MSN you shall type an e-mail address (hotmail for example) and password for Messenger. That shall look like this: email%hotmail.com@jabberserver.com .

Once set up it will work pretty well.

Patience my dear friend, if you're not keen on JabberWocky then hold in there as my messenger client will be ready shortly.

After many re-writes it's finally getting there. Think GAIM for AmigaOS. I have it running on OS3 here but it's also available for OS4 using its unique features.

Here's a screenshot of the application configured with MSN and AOL... two plugins which I've written to test the application with.

More information soon!

@Drummerboy

SWAUG did a full tutorial for Jabberwocky last year.

You can find it on the SWAUG website: http://www.swaug.org.uk

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

@Herewegoagain

They look awesome, if you're serious about contributing them then I'd like to talk some more about that!! Excellent.

@Drummerboy

Yes it will be available for OS3, only it will lack the features integrated with OS4, i.e. application.library and the new AmiDock.

Also, I'd like to point out that it is written with MUI in mind, not ReAction. I'm a firm MUI supporter.

I guess that will make it MorphOS compatible too. I have the SDK for MorphOS so I will be making a specific version for that OS when I've completed the project.

Anyway, keep an eye on http://www.the-snakepit.co.uk as that will contain all the up to date information as it happens.

Absolutely. I would be happy to contribute them to the cause, and make any varients you might need. I have only just viewed them under Ibrowse, and see that the "splash screen" part looks okay (.jpg) but the "app icon" (.png) lost alot of detail (softness) around the edges and has no drop shadow. I guess it's due to Ibrowse not displaying alpha channels or something. Anyway, I'll work on that and see what I can come up with.

Looks nice. If it supported Jabber, i'd be very tempted to use it.

@xeron

Maybe it might just be a case of writting a Jabber plugin?

@Slash

What features does it have in comparison with the latest versions of MSN/AIM? I'm talking mainly about useless fluff like emoticons, pictures and file transfer (which I suppose is quite useful thinking about it).

Looks very sweet.

@spotUP
If I can find some good docs on ICQ (I think it's the same as the more widley used AOL plugin using the OSCAR protocol) then I can have a look at implementing a plugin for that. I want to get the main application out of the way first.

@xeron
Same again, some decent Jabber source would be a help. I can't see a problem with a Jabber plugin.

@Herewegoagain
Yes, I viewed the page with iBrowse last night and this morning with FireFox and the latter definetly displays the image a lot nicer.

If you want to email me to discuss some more ideas regarding the spash screens etc. my address is daniel@the-snakepit.co.uk.

@Uncharted
Yes, there is a lot of crap in the Windows MSN, but I have a working emoticons system which I thought would be a nice feature to copy and file transfer will be implented in the plugins of protocols which have a file transfer system.
