Connecting Amiga500 to Television

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my Amiga 500 to my television,

At first I used the 23pin to Scart cable but that only gave me a light blue/purple screen, and I couldn't get anything else to show... so I opted to try the Mono video connector, and I get an image... the only problem is that it is VERY distorted, has no sound, and therefore isn't usable... why is the quality so bad? Do I need to set a special channel with a certain frequency for it to work correctly?

I'd love for this to work out in the end? any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Wim

@kuran

Works perfectly for me, with video composite out. Maybe you have a dodgy cable? As for the sound, you should have two phono cables from the sound output on the back of your Amiga to either your TV (if it have sound input) or to an amplifier.

@kuran, please have a read of the Hardware Book page about the A520 TV Modulator, then ask any further questions.

@vortexau
I already know about the TV Modulator, but I've read that its image quality is atrocious.. well, so is the quality that I'm having right now, perhaps its the fault of the cable.

Thanks for your help so far.

Wim

@kuran, a standard A500 outputs analog R.G.B. via its Db-23 RGB Video port, and monochrome Composite Video via its RCA-Composite port. Please tell us what type of signal you want to feed to your television set.?!

(here is an article about RGB & Composite signals which are completely different to RF; which is the Antenna-In port on a television set.)

The A520 was built to a price with pre-1990 components. Following are three present day encoders:

Mini RGB to NTSC Video Encoder / TV Converter $95

DigiBox RGBS - RGB to S-VHS/Composite Converter plus Stabiliser

ENC400A RGB to NTSC Video Encoder $ 360.00 US

I'm trying to use the monocrome composite port, as I have tried the RGB video port before with a SCART connection, but that wouldn't give me any image. (blue screen)

With my Amiga were included a cable that connects the composite port to my television's antenna-in port, that is the one I used when I described the low quality image. (B&W, constantly shifting image that moves up and down, severely grained so that nothing can be recognized, etc.)

Please don't lose your patience with me yet, my English isn't very good so I find it hard to explain such technical problems? I would be very happy if I could get this fixed.

Thank you

@kuran

You can't connect the composite output from the A500 straight into the back of a TV as it's a totally different signal type. If you have A/V inputs on your TV (usually yellow, white and red sockets) connect the composite output to the yellow connector on the TV and select the AV channel on the set. You'll need a phono to phono lead, not the normal one to connect to the back of the TV.

@kuran, there are no RF signals output from a standard A500. That "cable that connects the composite port to my television's antenna-in port" would supply signals incompatable with your television antenna-in port.

Don't worry -- I'm not getting impatient, just informing you that different connection methods are required. Please read from any of those THREE links for TV Encoders that I added to my last post. (You may have to refresh you web-browser)

@GazSP
So thats what I did wrong! I thought the red socket was for the video, and the yellow/white ones for audio? well, I have perfect image and audio now, but its in black&white :)

How can I fix that?

Almost there! I'm ecstatic, the game I'm using to test this is the adventure/platformer 'Elf', which has great music.

Can't be done . . . that RCA Socket only outputs a black & white composite signal.
To get a colour composite signal, you need an RGB-to-Composite Encoder attached to the Db-23 RGB-Video port.

@kuran

However, if your TV has got a composite video in connector, it would work.

@kuran, a sharper (colour) display can be obtained with a Commodore 1084 or Philips CM8833 monitor. Just this year I obtained a S/H CM8833 for $30. Many of these include stereo speakers in the case sides.

An exhaustive list of suitable Display Devices with screen sizes from 9" to 37", with specs.

@kuran

reconnect your AmigaRGB TO Scart cable, then push the AV key on the remote control of TV set 2 or 3 times, untill you see tha Amiga output.

Some Amiga>Scart cable, hasn't the right automatic switching, to enable the RGB input of the TVset.

Ciao

I've tried again, but can't get any image... the SCART connector also has (single pin) red and black connectors, are these for audio? I don't have them connected, maybe that is why it won't work?

@Vortexau
I already have a 1084s monitor, they're fantastic? yet I don't want the clutter of having it set up in my room...

@kuran

how old is your TVset? how many Scart socket it has?

It has menu or only manual settings?

You should try to find to ENABLE the "RGB IN" in your TVset.

Normally when you feed something through the Scart socket, you can choose if to ENABLE:

AV1-Composite or YC or RGB

Usually with a working AmigaRGB>Scart cable, this should be automatic but NOT with ALL the Tvset. (some Sony models)

And not, the audio has nothing to do.

Ciao

PS- where do you live?

@Framiga

My TV is a Sharp AQUOS LCD (photo), it allows me to select Y/C or CVBS as signal type? I can't find the option to enable RGB IN. Although the Scart connection on the TV is marked 'RGB', so I guess it is enabled by default.

All I get now is a white screen.

Oh and I live in Belgium. :)

I've never used composite on a A500. Can some one remind me if is monochrome or colour. I remember the colour composite on my CD32 because it was plugged into the composite input of my 1084S. The A1200 plugged into the 15? pin D socket.

OT

It was a pity Commodore put a S-VHS port instead of RGB SCART. Displaying Workbench with grotty composite and RF was awful. Now that I got a number of TV's with S-VHS my CD32 power pack has gone "missing". What was the display like with S-VHS? I imagine it was not as good as a A1200 RGB based display.

@kuran

give me the model number . . .there are gazillions of AQUOS LCD model.

Ciao

EDIT- bad news . . .if you have this inputs

Input 1 : Composite / S-Video / Component
Input 2 : Composite / S-Video
Input 3 : Composite / S-Video / Component
Input 4 : Composite / S-Video
PC Input : 15 pin Mini D-Sub

your TV (really nice indeed) has Component input and not analogic RGB.

Try to go in the menu setting (in the Input section) to see if you can change from Component Y-Cr-Cb to RGB).

@Framiga
It is a Sharp LC-13S1U-S

I can't choose RGB in the AV1 options menu, just CVBS & Y/C in Signal Type, and Mode 1/2 in AFC... there are also some colour system options but those aren't relevant I believe.

However the Scart port does read 'RGB', so it should be possible?
