Hi here´s zErec,

I would like to know who of u is still using the VideoToaster/ 4000 or Flyer today?

What Software do you recommend for it and is there anything new coming?

I know of the Millenium Software CDs for VT/Flyer by discreetFX.

I also heared of "OpenVideoToaster".

Are there any improvements made so far?

Is it possible to use the VideoToaster in an A4000 with OS4 installed?

I´ll try to collect as many Information as possible here in this Thread.

Here´s a Linkt to FAQ´s for the VideoToaster/Flyer

@zErec

I know the Video Toaster was broadcast quality back in 1994 but seriously! Was the Newtek software ever released on CD-Rom? If NewTek were that serious why the heck didn't they get financial backing and buy Commodore? Their business was on the line and they were synonymas with Commodore machines back then. What benefit does a Video Toaster have over an Amiga with Genlock in this day and age? Surely, I might as well buy iLife to do similar today! Pal Amigas were poorly served by NewTek, am I right? Balbylon 5 Season one was great in the day but is no where compared to the Pixar/Hollywood effects of today!

Yes the latest I know of is the 4.2c on CDROM.

I think the Video Toaster is still a unique piece of hardware even we life in 2009.

I used a V-Lab Motion years ago an it was hell of fun to do NLE.

@zErec

What's the difference between the two? What can you do with a Video Toaster that you can't do with a standard Amiga, Genlock, copy of Lightwave/Scala etc?

@BigD

VT 4000 & Flyer is much cooler and feature rich then just a Amiga genlock.

@zErec

4.3 update is the last version still sold by NewTek.

@DiscreetFX

Point taken, very impressive. How many Amiga sales were generated by NewTek and its range of machines? Products like this deserved to push the Amiga into the mainstream. Oh how the world forgets (or like me never knew)! Was there a Toaster 4000T?

So.......Was there a Toaster 4000T or were they all adapted A3000/4000 machines? Was the AGA chipset used to great effect for was the video co-processor supplied by the NewTek Hardware?

@zErec

Hi, i bought a brand new A4000T from softhut in order to user my toaster flyer combo. It's was always my dream setup. Dunno how to use it, but when i'll have a bit of time and a spare camera i'll play around with it to learn.

@BigD

Yes the toaster4000 will take advantage of the aga chip set to generate better effect. never heard of a toaster 4000T as the toaster 4000 will fit in an Amiga4000T. I remember reading lots of add telling that it was the best toaster computer ever.

@BigD

There are two cards

The Video Toaster 4000 (takes advantage of AGA Chipset !!!)

The hardware component was a full-sized card which went into the Amiga's unique single video expansion slot rather than the standard bus slots, and therefore could not be used with the A500 and A1000 models. The card had several BNC connectors in the rear, which accepted four video input sources and provided two outputs (preview and program). This initial generation system was essentially a real-time four-channel video switcher. A user still needed three VTRs to perform A/B roll as the Toaster was not a non-linear editor (NLE). An NLE would be added later, with the invention of the Video Toaster Flyer.

The Video Toaster Flyer

For the second generation NewTek introduced the Video Toaster Flyer. The Flyer was a much more capable non-linear editing system. In addition to just processing live video signals, the Flyer made use of hard drives to store video clips as well as audio and allow complex scripted playback. The Flyer was capable of simultaneous dual-channel playback, which allowed the Toaster's Video switcher to perform transitions and other effects on Video clips without the need for rendering.

The hardware component was again a card designed for the Amiga's Zorro II expansion slot, and was primarily designed by Charles Steinkuehler. The Flyer portion of the Video Toaster/Flyer combination was a complete computer of its own, having its own microprocessor and embedded software, which was written by Marty Flickinger. Its hardware included three embedded SCSI controllers. Two of these SCSI buses were used to store video data, and the third to store audio. The hard drives were thus connected to the Flyer directly and used a proprietary filesystem layout, rather than being connected to the Amiga's buses and were available as regular devices using the included DOS driver. The Flyer used a proprietary Wavelet compression algorithm known as VTASC, which was well regarded at the time for offering better visual quality than comparable Motion JPEG based non-linear editing systems.

I have my Toaster/Flyer setup still working. I've found it quite powerful for doing web based videos. The quality isn't HD of course, but for youtube type stuff it works great. Last year I also bought the lastest CD and a new interface cable from Newtek. (The slender ribbon cable in the box on the right in your picture) Try finding the pinout for one of those suckers on the internet... you won't.

They had to scrounge around a bit for my order, but they came through. They now call these Amiga cards the "First Generation" cards. And if you're lucky, you'll get some one on the phone that remembers them.

How many Amigas did NewTek's machines help to sell? It would be great if the media acknowledged the true contribution this machine played in the media revolution in the 90's, Commodore's bankruptcy not withstanding! Apple machines are shown in so many films it's as if they are the only computer company selling machines to Hollywood actors- An Apple laptop was used to spread a virus to alien technology in Independance day for goodness sake! It was cool to see that Wesley off 'Star Trek the Nex Gen' was a Video Toaster user
