There's a very nice demonstration of Video Toaster on the Amiga 3000 (about halfway through the show, IIRC).

I'm still amazed looking at that, especially when comparing to the "performance" of Adobe Premiere on apparantly much faster hardware.

Instead of Adobe Premiere, use Avid Liquid or OfficeFX Pro instead i.e. both includes GpGPU acceleration for RT effects.

I bought a toaster to make a 50th wedding video for the inlaws. Big mistake as I got hooked and bought toaster several 4000's and flyers. Still have 3 toaster/flyers with one in a 4000 Tower and avec flight tower for the drives.

Think this was the area where the ball was dropped. The price/performance far exceeded the compitition at the time. When production stoped on the Amiga developers left for other pastures and the Amiga got left. Still think the interface on the flyer was better than most of the new stuff.

Wish my c2d pc had a zorro 3 slot!

They talk about AmigaVision in that video; whatever happened to that? I don't remember seeing it on my Workbench 2.04 disks (A600).

Um..seen the new iMovie that is part of iLife'08?
The UI bears at least a superficial resemblance
to the Flyer (i.e. use of crouton like clip icons, only
the Apple implementation allows what they refer
to as skimming)

In 1992 Avid, and to a lesser degree, Premiere were
considered the best solutions on other platforms.
Expensive and generally used for offline editing,
these early non-linear editing solutions required a
lot of rendering and compression (done to avoid
filling up the big, fast, expensive SCSI drives needed
for large video files). High end stuff was then often
conformed in an on-line editing suite that usually
rented out at $150+/hr (better to offline in a cheaper
environment, then get the original tapes and do the
final edit with most of the decisions already made -
or so the thinking went back then - in practice, there
was still considerable tinkering being done in the
expensive on-line suite).

Wedding videos edited on Toaster/Flyer systems
were generally printed right to tape. Back then,
the level of compression used was acceptable
to wedding videographers printing to VHS tape.

It was a seperate program. Bought it when I bought a 3000 that had the alpha roms, genlock, and a whopping 20mb hd! I ended up with a few copies that came bundled with machines I bought. May still have one stored away somewhere. I did give a van full of Amiga Hard/software to Kent when he was at A.org, so he may have all my copies. Never really like it much but it was an early mulitimedia presentation type software.

I have the new iMovie 08 right here on the DiscreetFX Intel Mac. Yes they did borrow some ideas from the Flyers interface however there is no Switcher and the program gets bogged down when you try and do some serious editing. It is missing alot of the power features of the Flyer and 3rd party plug-ins do not work. I'm sure Apple will try and improve it though.

I only noticed a similarity from the iLife '08 screen
shots - I don't actually own the program.

The new iMovie was said to be a from the ground up
rewrite, yet the new program does less than the old
program. I think the rewrite was to make the program
easier (and faster) to use. I don't think that iMovie was
ever meant to be quite as comprehensive a tool as
the Toaster/Flyer, anyway.

I'm aware of Amiga's strengths back in the early 90s i.e. use own an Amiga 3000/030@25Mhz in 1992. There are issues with the Toaster in PAL countries e.g. refer to Opalvision attempts. Back in 1992, Adobe Premiere 2.0 was only available for the 68K MacOS platform i.e. uses a comparable 68K CPUs as the Amiga platform.
