Well, I'm sure this has been covered before, but I thought I'd try and gather some information, as I ain't been too successful in the past!

I was wondering if anyone here had tried an alternative way of cooling their PPC cards (using something other than the tiny fan blowing behind the heatsink, as standard) and what you have used?

I'd like to put the enclosure back on my Power Tower, but I don't dare without first putting some more efficient cooling in place

Some information on heatsinks and fittings would be much appreciated!

Cheers.

Steve

@stevieu

I could be wrong, but I think AmigaKit carry some special fans for cooling Blizzard boards. Don't quote me on it though!

@TrevorDick

I can only seem to find the replacement fan for the BPPC and not much else

I'm hoping to replace the Phase5 heatsink and use a new fan, as it just collects dust.

I found this:

I can't seem to find anything similar though.

@stevieu

I ripped the crappy black heatsink off years ago and stuck a heatsink on the 060 and a heatsink with a fan on the ppc and stuck a heatsink on the SCSI chip which had a side effect of speeding up the scsi transfers. I then glued heatsinks on anything that got hot.

something like this kit is perfect Glue the fan on the PPC the large heat sink on the 060 and the small on the SCSI chip. hit the gallery button on these to products to see the pretty pictures to get an idea

And use ram coolers like these to cool the regulators and the one chip on the opposite side by the A1200 connector that will blister skin if you touch it.

I used a thermall epoxy like this don't worry when it says not to use on a CPU it will work just dandy with the 603 and 060 I used its silver brother on mine but it is not worth the exspense of using silver epoxy on a 603.

@kgrach

Thanks for the suggestions I'm not so sure about permanently gluing a heatsink to the PPC chip though, just in case I come to removing it in the future... I shall have to find a way of securing it without.

I've just cut the side panel (which the A1200 mainboard attaches to) to accommodate a heatsink and fan. I just need to sort out a backplate now for a PeeCee case for my other A1200T project. Oh, what tower to choose... :D

Cheers.

Now that's what I call cooling!

@stevieu

It may be worth dropping Matthew (AmigaKit) an email through the AmigaKit website?

In regards to a backplate?

Steve

@stevieu

I actually put a heatsink onto the black heatplate on the PPC without removing the back plate. And another heatsink one on the 060. They were both slightly larger than those on the pictures here. Don't know if you can fit all that.

I fitted them with thermal paste and some sewing threads
I also left the original fan in place under the black plate.
