Amiga 4000D, PC keyboard?

Got my Amiga 4000 up and running today.

I had to type something in, but when I plugged in a PC keyboard into the PS2 connector on the Amiga, I got a continuous load of random characters so I unplugged it.
Can you connect a PC keyboard directly to the Amiga 4000 or do you need an adapter like the Lyra?
Also which slot on the daughterboard is the video card slot, or does it not matter which one you use?
What is the best way to connect the Amiga 4000 to my router, is it possible to connect it wirelessly? There is no LAN connector.
And where does the battery backed clock go? The previous owner said he removed it years ago to prevent it from leaking during storage, just wondering where it went, and can I add another one.

Thanks,
Gordon

@Gordon

You cannot use a PC keybaord with your 4000 without an adaptor like the Lyra or others.

The Video Slot on your A4k is the top most slot.

You need an Amiga Ethernet board for your Amiga.

The battery backed clock is right to the left of the Memory modules

@realize

BTW, the video slot on the 4000desktop is on the bottom of the daughter board...
maybe confused with the 3000desktop

@gordon

normally, the clock chip is still there, only the battery is removed...

@SACC-dude

Haha you are right.. Sometimes you have to put something between it and the Ram simms. I was thinking of 3000D

@Gordon

PC Keyboards and Amiga Keyboards have different "codes" transferred from the keyboard to the machine
so for each code read from an Amiga keyboard the same code will not arrive for the same key on a PC keyboard.

also the codes for the Amiga keyboard are all 8bit codes, where the PC keyboard has variable length from 8bits through to 24bits in length (possibly longer as well???)

There is also the fact that PC expansion cards use an entirely different style of slot connector
so there is a physical difference in the expansions.

an Amiga needs Amiga expansion cards,

the same as a PC with an AGP slot can use an AGP card, or a PCIe-16 slot for PCIe-16 expansions
however a PCIe-16 slot can not accept an AGP card without an adapter or port-splitter of some kind.

the A4000 graphics slot is "low" on the daughtercard in the middle of the Desktop model and the top
two slots of the daughterboard on Tower adapted versions,
the A3000 graphics slot is "high" on the daughtercard in the middle of the Desktop model and the
Tower model I have not seen internally to say which way this is.

so definitely you will need a Lyra or other means of attaching a PC keyboard to convert the codes
from the PC standard to the Amiga standard codes, along with making sure the convertor
and the Keyboard have a matched layout as well

here is a pic showing the battery (the green barrel) next to the simm sockets. the full lenth video slot on the daughter board is the bottom slot on the A4000D and like the others have said, you will need a keyboard adapter to use a pc keyboard on the amiga (or a real amiga keyboard)

Regards

@Abu_the_monkey

Thanks again,
Mine does not have the green barrel, just an outline on the motherboard where it was, the seller said he removed it years ago to prevent it from leaking.

I gave up trying to get the CF harddrive working, I have ordered an IDE harddrive off ebay.

Cheers
