I'd like to see Amigakit put up an ebay store.

Amigakit: but we sell stuff on ebay.

me: I'd like to see Amigakit put up a STORE on ebay, with lots of items, including A1200s used/reconditioned, accelerator cards, etc..

It would cost them extra to trade through ebay and their webstore works fine. I suppose it would have the advantage of attracting customers that might not otherwise be aware of them, but it doesn't really benefit those those of us in the know.

Every sale we put through Ebay costs us extra money: listing fees, store fees and final value fees.

When we sell through our own webstore, we are not hit by those costs. Remember that every sale we have, the revenue after paying costs goes back to investing in our Amiga projects- there is no sense in letting Ebay take revenue away from the Amiga market.

Why not order directly from us?

Agreed - Ebay is a real killer, especially when you factor-in the paypal charges. I despise the Ebay monopoly on trading, especially second-hand trade. They have us by the gonads on it, and they certainly take full advantage. If you can get away without using them because your business is well-known among the target audience then it's definitely better to avoid Ebay.

I always visit AmigaKit in person so they get paid in cash. Mind you I probably end up causing delays for other people when I stay there chatting for ages.

Haha. I was waiting for the barrage of complaints. I haven't been there since sometime last year when I picked up a scart lead for my Minimig I can't blamed for anything recent.

I remember a while ago they advertised MAS players on the new products page so Iposted a link here. I was down there a week or so later and Chris complained (jokingly) that it was my fault that he has to build about 20 of them at short notice.

@amigakit

I haven't seen the new offices yet.

I've been a bit skint lately and just spent a pile of money on renewing AA membership, some silicone hoses for the car and some shelving/storage containers for all my tools and other bit and pieces currently taking up loads of space at home.

I'll have to pop round when you get Brian Bagnalls new book in stock

edit.

For any non Brits, AA is Automobile Association and not Alcoholics Anonymous. I'm not a drunkard and just want to make sure I don't get stranded if the car I'm in breaks down and I can't fix it myself.

Yes indeed I really must pop in as I would love to catch up with you. I promise to arrange something with you over the next couple of months! I am fancying an ECS scandoubler for the CDTV I rescued from the crusher this morning anyway!

@DarthX

No offence by the way - your idea is sound if only it wasn't for the Ebay/Paypal monopoly and their extremely harsh charges.

I agree on AmigaKit not using eBay or any other bid platform. Their WebStore is well structured. It would be nice if some product pictures could be exchanged with ones having a higher resolution.

Instead of using eBay, I often use www.hood.de, it's usually much cheaper in both cases, selling or buying.

Many thousands of webstores are in the same situation as you.

They already have a perfectly functioning webstore and they don't like giving all their profits to Evil Ebay Inc.

So what they do is they keep their webstore exactly as it has always been.

Then they open an Ebay store with inflated prices to cover the costs of being ripped off by Ebay.

Then these ppl hang out on forums related to their products fully promoting that their webstore has lower prices than their ebay store.

This allows them to attract ppl from Ebay that they might not otherwise have attracted. And it allows them to keep offering their same low prices to all the people "in the know"

I hate the Evil Ebay/PayPal Crime Syndicate and am NOT ADVOCATING you to do what I have outlined above.

Just giving u information as I have seen countless webstores do this.

Protip: Keep constantly emptying ALL the money out of your paypal account. Paypal is not a bank and they don't have to follow the rules of civilized society the way banks do. Paypal can and will STEAL all the money out of your paypal account any time they damned well please. It happened to me and thousands of others.

btw: Paypal also lied to you when they said there were no fees for processing credit card transactions as your webstore CLAIMS. In actuality PayPal always stole/charged a $1.00 fee every time I ever placed an order with you, ever.

That made me very very mad as you (AmigaKit) blatantly lied to me saying there would be no surchage!

Do u see how Paypal is making you look bad?

They do the same thing to countless other merchants.

Paypal also has other scams they do to merchants but I won't go into them now.

All this is FYI.

I'm guessing as well as the exorbitant eBay fees it's also got to do with eBay's lopsided buyer protection program, Amigakit sells a lot of specialised equipment, clock port, scandoublers etc that if installed incorectly would damage the product, such items returned through eBay would make it almost imposible for Amigakit to have the discretion to decline refunds in such circumstances as eBay opperate a very unfair "the buyer is always right" policy.

If you already run a sucessul webstore of you own you would definitely want to steer well clear of eBay for selling expensive and delicate items.

I bought a MAS player years and years ago. It never worked actually. I think I still have it somewhere...

What are these MAS players that AmigaKit are "building"? Are they literally making their own version of the MAS player? I shall have to check it out when I visit!

Nice catch. AmigaKit have a large stock of original remotes for £9.95 if you fancy having a spare one as a backup.

The schematics are freely available so AmigaKit build their own.

They had one connected up to an A600 or A1200 when I visited before, so they should be able to give you a demonstration.

I didn't realise the schematics were available. It must be quite hard to source that decoder IC these days. Yes I think I will have a discussion with them about that!

Being a multimillion pound eBay seller myself I do have to say my company fell into the eBay thing many years ago and whilst it has some obvious pitfalls for sellers, the advantages are there to be seen also - the exposure one gets and the perception of safety to the customer is a big reason for us and other bigger players such as Argos and Tesco to also be on eBay (and Amazon).

Someone mentioned inflating the price to allow for the higher costs of selling on eBay/using PayPal. Unfortunately market forces don't allow for this and actually what happens is we just take a significant hit on our GP. In addition, eBay is full of people running shops with no backup, financial or otherwise and will happy sell from their lock-up for next to no margin, often drop shipping from spineless distrubutors who don't think about the big picture and keeping a healthy market. What I will say is, eBay is an interesting place, as a buyer and as a seller.

I am a reasonably regular customer of AmigaKit's and what I will say about their site is, it's easy to use, there is loyalty discount depending on previous purchases and their sales order processing system and CRM works great. We all know Amigakit well enough to trust them and their site.

I forgot about the discount, so I just checked and I'm on 1%. I wonder if anyone is on a 7% discount?

7%? I'm nearly close to reach 3.7%... Hmm, maybe I will buy some more X1000s...
