Quitting TCP/IP crashes the system

Hi everyone,

I have just installed and configured Roadshow and I am online with it. However, when I run the shutdown command AmigaOS freezes and I have to reboot. This is annoying primarily because I can't run WHDLoad with a TCP/IP stack running at the same time - it doesn't seem to work.

I don't think this is a Roadshow specific problem as I also experienced the same with MiamiDX and Genesis. In the case of Genesis I was able to avoid the problem by exiting the GUI instead of selecting the 'offline' button.

Curiously, this problem did not occur using the EasyNet GUI - selecting offline in that environment works without crashing the system.

So I am just wondering if anyone has ideas about what might be causing this hang-up..

Thanks,

BH

EDIT: I should probably have stated that I am running a desktop A1200 with a Blizzard 1230 and AmigaOS3.9. Network card is a PCMCIA wireless card from AmigaKit.

@BrianHoskins

Have you tried using good old AmiTCP? Good info here.

Try adding "noautovec" for whdload. It worked for what ever Mediator drivers did with interrupts.

@A1200
I think the best tcp stack is Miami , great user interface and is great in the settings inside.

@BrianHoskins

When you quit (not offline) a TCP/IP stack, all tasks with bsdsocket.library open get sent a break signal (Ctrl-C) to tell them to quit.

Probably you have something running which is crashing rather than quitting on break. Check for any running network applications, handlers, commodities, etc - and try quitting them manually before shutting TCP/IP down.

Once you've identified the culprit you can send a bug report to the author.

@BrianHoskins

I wonder how stable the net driver is. What hardware and device are you using?

Thank you all for your replies.

@A1200: My understanding is (correct me if I am wrong) that Genesis and EasyNet are basically just GUI front ends for AmiTCP. Therefore, when I've used Genesis and EasyNet I've already been using AmiTCP. In those cases I found that the crash still happens when I use Genesis, though I can avoid it if I exit the application instead of selecting 'offline'. Unfortunately I don't have a full version of Genesis (only the bundled OS3.9 version) and this doesn't allow me to use samba with it. I have no way of registering the full version of Genesis anymore and that was the main motivation behind me going down the Roadshow route.

@Thematic: I will try that, thanks! Even if I get my TCP/IP problem sorted it will be useful if I can run WHDLoad without concerning myself with the open TCP/IP stack.

@tlosm: Agreed. Unfortunately I experience lots of crashes with Miami, perhaps related to the problem I've been talking about. But you're right, MiamiDX is a good program and it's what I always used in the past.

@Chris_Y: Okay now this could be very useful info for me. The first question I have in relation to your response is: how can I find out what tasks have been using bsdsocket.library? If I had a list of all the tasks that are interfacing with it, then I could try your suggestion of shutting them down one at a time.
I could run SnoopDOS but I guess I'd somehow need to have it running before anything else starts during the boot sequence? Is that possible?

@Hypex: The net driver is prism2. The hardware I'm not quite so certain of because it has a very large EasyNet sticker on it! But I wouldn't imagine that the hardware is at fault...

Thanks again everyone.

BH.

@BrianHoskins

Genesis: No, it's not "just a frontend" for AmiTCP - alas the backend of the Genesis package indeed consists of roughly 95% AmiTCP. Further the AmigaOS 3.9 release featured a complete Genesis install with all bells and whistles, I never heard of any other "full version" of Genesis. And indeed I use exactly this Genesis with Samba since 14 years, so whatever hinders you to use Samba, it isn't Genesis.

@cha05e90

The Netconnect CDs had Genesis.

Ah, thanls,I didn't knew that. Nevertheless the OS3.9 variant of Genesis should be able to do everything that's needed to get connected (despite DHCP, which isn't needed for Samba...).

OS 3.9 comes with the full version of Genesis and it happily runs Samba. You have to install Boingbag1 to fix GenesisPrefs, though.

The only difference between Genesis in OS 3.9 and Genesis (Demo) on Aminet is that OS 3.9 uses ReAction for its GUI and the other version uses MUI.

@thomas & all:

I experienced the Genesis Prefs problem you mentioned but I solved it by running SnoopDOS and then installing the missing MUI library. Therefore I am still missing boing bags 1 and 2 and any extra functionality they provide. I do have these updates on my computer but when I try to install they ask for the OS3.9 CDROM and I have no (easy) way of connecting a CDROM to my desktop A1200, which is why I haven't got around to installing them yet.

With regard to Genesis and Samba, I was in the process of following this guide:

http://sambaforamigaos.wordpress.com/classic-amiga-making-changes-part-four-users/

and when I came to the users part I found that I did not have the option to add users. This lead me to believe that I was running a stripped-down version of Genesis?

Regarding my hang-up issues, which are common among most of the TCP/IP packages I've tried, I would be very interested to hear some ideas about how I can find out what's happening at the point of crash so that I can discover the cause.

BH
