| Hello,
Lately I finally managed to get myself an external USB CD-Drive because my netbook's chipset is supposed to support WiFi on Aros.
Unformtunately despite of booting into AROS GRUB menu, after launching any of the items, the CD gets invisible after AROS progresses to load and this is reported hence the booting process gets held. I use Icaros LiveCD, version 1.2.4 I suppose.
Any clues on that? This looks as a serious bug 'cause it looks as if AROS wasn't seeing any other external USB-plugged CD drive. And netbooks do have that issue that CD Drives are attached externally, mostly...
Is this issue resolved in any subsequent releases?
I'd appreciate to play a bit more with AROS before I get another PPC system.

It may (!) be bad news.... some note- and netbooks seem to boot from USB upto a certain stage (probably when USB stack kicks in...), and will then stop. This is at least what I experienced with some netbooks and notebooks. I see grub, I select VESA, booting..., seeing Wanderer/AROS... stops... At least in my case it is due to unsupported USB.

This is exactly what I expected Hence I thought maybe - since netbooks are no new to AROS - that this is known issue been worked on, right?
So no chance you say? Damn, I waited 12 months for WiFi stack and new computer with supported chipset, eventually I got CD ROM (borrowed fortunately) and now this _________________ Amiga 1200 + WARP 1260 + AmigaOS 3.2 |

| @saimon69 if I get you right, that means, that his netbook can boot from an usb stick, which it probably won't, because I guess it doesn't boot from USB at all !
@DiskDoctor This is what I would try... 1) try/check different USB settings inside BIOS 2) Install AROS from any other PC onto an USB Stick, try booting from stick... (which probably won't work as I stated above, but it is worth a try anyway... 3) get HD of your netbook and put it into another PC and then Install on HD -> put it back.... 4) maybe you could install from VMWare ? (Donnot know anything about it, though...
However, I had to try quiet a few netbooks, until I got on which was working, even there I had to swap WLAN PCI-e mini cards (got an Atheros for 2€ from ebay...).
I know, it is quiet a hassle to find a supported netbook, and the solutions above are not really satisfying...

| @ncafferkey guess i should have said 'workaround', instead, my bad ^^
@gerograph
It seemed to me that diskdoctor's problems were on booting from USB CD rather than from USB in general that is why i suggested that. However, the last AROS install i made on stick was on february, did not tried any of the new nightlies with modularized kernel so my knowledge now can be obsolete.

| I cant say for sure it'll definately solve your problems, but Id suggest trying a newer version of Icaros, or perhaps Broadway, or AROS Aspire. I dont recall exact dates, but if memory serves me correctly Icaros 1.2.4 is something like 12 or so months old. A Considerable work has been done in regards to the things youve mentioned since (not to mention AROS core itself), so I dont believe Icaros 1.2.4 will give an accurate representation of where it's currently at. Even Icaros 1.2.6 is a little old now compared to what else is available. This isnt to say I advise against Icaros, it's probably the most mature AROS distro currently, but the core components currently arent as up to date as either Broadway or AROS Aspire. Having said this once installed Im sure it's possible to update core files if a person is inclined.

The most up to date AROS distro, at the time of writing this, is AROS Aspire 0.8. Can get it here: http://sites.google.com/site/arosaspireone/aros-aspire-distro
Though in name it's for Acer Aspire netbooks, in reality it includes the same base system as other AROS releases, so is definitely worth a try. |

Thanks for the tips.
This sucks, man. I've had one notebook, which turned not to have supported WiFi chipset. I got another, a netbook that is, with deemed Atheros chip but eventually USB-attached CD drive failed to boot Icaros 1.2.
Allright, I will burn and try out all these three most-current distros. Eventually if it fails, I've got a third PC computer available on my mind...
But still, this is getting nuts, man.

yep, finding a netbook/notebook for AROS is hard. I tried 6 notebooks/netbooks none of them worked 100%:
Dell Latitude E6410: won't boot from USB Stick, USB doesn't work at all, only VESA, no sound, WIFI only because I exchanged mini PCI-e card.
HP business Notebook (cannot remember model anymore check aros-exec.org): same as above, LAN worked though, WLAN didn't as you cannot exchange WIFI Card (HP Bios Lock)
Acer Aspire D250: LAN=yes, Sound=yes, VESA, WLAN=no
Acer Aspire D150 (D= for Germany) LAN=no, Sound=yes (after DavyW added support for soundcard/ seems that soundcards of AcerAspire are different from country to country) VESA, WLAN=yes (Attention: not all AA150 do have Atheros 5000 in them...)
Lenovo Netbook: LAN=yes everything else= no (as far as I remember)
However, as said before Atheros mini PCI Wlan cards can be bought via ebay and mostly be fitted very easily. There is somewhere a Hardwarewiki over on Aros-exec.org. Keep in mind, that not all Atheros cards do work, should be a 5xxx based card.
sorry and regards gerograph _________________ Geomarketing at www.geobiz.de www.gebietsplanung.net www.geomarketing-consultant.de |

| If someone has a Samsung NC10 I can tell you that it works very well with the latest Icaros.
WLAN, USB, Sound (HD-Audio), GFX (GMA) and LAN works great now =)

| @DiskDoctor Did you try installing to a USB thumb drive as this may solve your problem?
Its also worth checking if your netbook has any usb related options in the BIOS such as USB keyboard and mouse emulation that you can try disabling. _________________ Sam440ep 667mhz, 512MB, 120GB 2.5" HD, OS4.1FE WinUae 3.0.0, OS 3.9, BB3, Catweasel MkIV Amiga 1200, Blizzard 040/40 (BlizzardPPC 060/200 with SCSI removed at present), mediatorSX pci, Voodoo3, PCI network card os 3.9BB2 4MB Minimig with ARM addon boar |

I've just reported your message to moderators of this site. Being and AROS active user and - somehow - developer, I feel your post extremely inappropriate: it doesn't help to solve the discussed issue, and it's just offensive for other people. |

Finding a supported netbook is not so hard, other people have already mentioned some that actually work. With Intel moving from the first to the second generation of Atom processor/platform, many of the achivements already gotten by AROS had been placed to discussion again, however latest GMA driver can run also on GMA3100 embedded GPUs, so at least this piece of the puzzle should be OK again.
However, people interested in running AROS on a notebook/netbook should choose their hardware carefully, as like as people did with Linux years ago. Otherwise, the best option would be helping the development of proper drivers. In any case, eBay is full of products you can run AROS on.
Anyway, your issues with AROS are now long run. I can make a bootable USB pendrive for you, and see if the problem persists. Last edited by paolone on 05-Jun-2011 at 01:14 PM.

The facts are that: 68k software can run on AROS only in uae. Exactly as under Windows or Linux. AROS does not offer anything more than what is available under Windows or Linux. And in contrast to these systems, AROS has no memory protection and does not offer the use of multiple cores. There is no logical reason to use this system. You have a problem with criticism of AROS. |

AROS should run on any PC is not older than 4-5 years.

As for Linux 15 years ago.

The best option is to use WinUAE. It works on any hardware.
