| Hi All,
I thought I'd post some pics of my recently completed "Atom 600" project. The plan was to put some modern hardware into the case of an A600. It took me a long time to find a motherboard that would fit in the A600's tiny case, but I finally found one in the form of the Intel D945GSEJT.
It's now 95% finished and ready for people to have a look at. It's currently running as a very capable and completely silent AROS system thanks to the Icaros Desktop and Clusteruk's driver support!

I am so impressed with this, whilst I do not normally like Amiga's being sacrificed this way I think this is a great way to use an old A600 case and keyboard and the resulting machine will run UAE fast enough.
Amazing, well done.

Don't worry. No Amigas were harmed in the making of this. The A600 board is tucked away safely awaiting another project. _________________

I wonder if you could fit in a catweasel mk4 inside. I have a flexible PCI slot adaptor and then you could have the floppy actually working and compatible
Also the fact that this is the same as in the IMICA Silent that is the perfect board. If anybody else wants to try this, I can supply the boards at a good price as I have a few. Last edited by clusteruk on 22-Jul-2010 at 07:26 AM.

Don't forget the Catweasel would let you plug in an actual Amiga joystick too. :)
There's only two things stopping JanusUAE behaving like a full Amiga with a Catweasel: Doesn't boot UAE off the CW drive directly (changes in UAE needed) Right mouse button on CW port doesn't work properly (SID chip may fix this).
Apart from that it's pretty much the full Amiga with a Catweasel (although still losing some of that Amiga and smoothness feel that you can only get when using a Classic, IMHO) |

...but with the obvious ability to do thing a classic A600 wouldn't have ever done when you switch off emulation, and use the Atom processor directly with things like MPlayer, OWB and so on. |

I am with you on the Amiga hardware effect, no emulator can ever get close to the feeling of the real hardware, my A1000 is way smoother at scrolling text than any emulator can manage, but this will run emulated software at about fast 040 speed from my test and give AGA compatibility.
In time we may get boot from floppy which will be very cool but not really necessary.
All in all though a nice experiment and I hope poster puts a catweasel in there. _________________ Amiga 1000, 3000D Toaster, Checkmate A1500 Plus http://www.checkmate1500plus.com/ |

| I could see myself ordering such a rebuilt A600... or A500. (but I would not sacrifice my working A600 for that) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

How about attempting a Suzanne Laptop type project with the mobo

Why ? You could just take a complete laptop and run AROS/UAE...
Or that Acer thingy...Last edited by Metalheart on 22-Jul-2010 at 09:28 AM.

Way ahead of you on the Catweasel idea. I had hoped to do exactly what you suggested with a flexible PCI riser cable, but there's seriously not enough room in the case. The back of the keyboard rests against the PCI slot, so the cable would have to fold completely flat. Also installing a Catweasel would mean relocating the hard drive and the KeyRah. I suppose if the Catweasel laid flat, and I positioned the KeyRah and hard drive on top of it...
I'm planning on getting a Catweasel at some point anyway, so I'll look into it. All my games are installed via WHDLoad anyway, so it's no problem.
@Spirantho
The KeyRah lets me plug in an Amiga joystick, which is a bonus! My Competition Pro is the classic version.
@Metalheart
Yeah, but...M68K laptop running OS 3. Gotta be done!
I have a project in mind for the A600 board anyway. My plan is to build a RobCo terminal from Fallout 3, and I'd like to use it in that. Either that or a C64 board. _________________

| Added another pic to the gallery.
This shows how cramped everything is inside. I couldn't lay the IDE cable over the PCI slot, or the case wouldn't shut. I couldn't use SATA cables because the connectors were too tall!
@all
Thanks for all the nice comments. Makes this sort of stupid thing worth doing _________________
