How To Install XPK_User? Posted on 31-Jan-2006 20:52:25

| How do i install the XPK_User? I also tried to put XPKMasterPrefs in User-Startup by typing in:
Run >NIL: XpkMasterPrefs
When i did, The whole system locked up. There is something wrong...
Any idea what to do? I gave up installing it to my system, as i already have something called Zhxpk, being a packer/unpacker...
It would be great if any could help |

First of all, this xpk archive does not contain the OS4 binary for xpkmaster.library. Without that (or a 68K binary if that works on OS4), the xpk_User.lha you have downloaded from OS4 will be useless.
The readme on OS4Depot mentions that the archive only contains some parts of the original xpkmaster user archives which have been recompiled for OS4. This implies that you still need the original xpkmaster archive and its components installed on your system, with these new OS4 recompiled bits to replace the original 68K bits.
The comments on OS4Depot for the archive also confirm this.
So basically, you have not got xpkmaster installed on your system prior to downloading the xpk_User.lha archive from OS4Depot, and subsequently it will not work for you at all. Therefore, you need to go get the original xpk file from either aminet, or the homepage mentioned in the guide/readme provided in the OS4Depot archive. _________________ Test sig (new) |

I had a feeling that was the case. I have something else that is very similar but smarter - Xhxpk Packer/Unpacker |

Have you tested zhxpk with packing and unpacking files? Everything go OK?

The xpk_User package, as it is available on OS4Depot.Net, isn't going to be needed by a lot of people, maybe not by anyone. I ported/compiled it for OS4 because I could, and the sources were there. As xpkmaster.library is already included with AmigaOS4 all apps that's using it should work fine. In your case, though, I see no need to install the xpk_User archive, unless you want to pack things from a shell, instead install something like zhxpk, which is just a small gui for xpkmaster.library that can pack and unpack stuff.
I should also say that I don't think xpk is that useful at all today. With everyone getting big hd:s packing surely isn't needed.
Regards, Joachim Birging
EDIT:
It does indeed seem like XpkMasterPrefs is broken. I didn't have problems with it at first, but some more tests reveal that it is. Symptoms like Helgis describes them...

OK! I think I've fixed XpkMasterPrefs, it was semaphore handling that has changed since 3.x.
It should soon be approved on OS4Depot.Net.

Ok, that's good, but they need to be PPC-OS4 native, but then again WHY the XPK when there is Xhxpk? |

First off, it's zhxpk, don't insult the author of that program, he's very powerful ;)
Secondly, xpk is the original package, and some poeple still would like to set up buttons in DOpus4, or similar, for easy packing. There's just different advantages in using them...

XPK is useful for users who have upgraded to an AmigaOne, but still use many of their old samples/tunes on the A1 which were packed using one of the many XPK compressors.
In this case rather than having to unpack everything on their original Amiga (or under UAE), and resaving/transferring them back to the A1, it is far simpler to just have a native port of the system. This doesn't mean that you then have to use it to recompress new things - which being honest is less of a problem these days with the sizes of HD people tend to have. _________________ Test sig (new) |

It certainly comes in handy now and then I prefer the Xhxpk, as it has a GUI for packing/unpacking |

I use YAM's XPK support for compressing emails. It can save a fair bit of space especially when emails have attachments, although I would agree it isn't as useful now as when using older smaller hard drives.
The other benefit is for sending things across a network, as it can be faster to (de)compress something and copy it across the network then copying it in an uncompressed form - this is especially true with slow network speeds (such as dial-up to the Internet, but you would probably be using an archiver for that)
Of course it is also necessary when saving on limited-space media. I'm sure there are lots of other scenarios where single-file packing is useful.
