You can find an updated version of libSDL 1.2.9 for AmigaOS 4.0 at http://www.rcdrummond.net/sdl.

This version contains no source changes over the version that was shipped with SDK 51.22. However, it seems that the SDK version was built without optimization and so performs poorly. It is recommended you use this version instead.

Don't unpack these archives over your native SDK install. Instead, simply copy the libSDL.a files to the appropriate places in your SDK: directory hierarchy.

This will probably be the last update for a while. Judging from the lack of feedback I get, there appears to be little interest in SDL for AmigaOS 4.0, so there seems little point devoting much more time to this project. In any case, I'm working on integrating the changes from the upcoming SDL 1.2.10 release, which features some significant changes to the build process, and also completing the shared library implementation. It's expected that these changes will take some time to finalize.

Cheers,
Rich

Sorry to hear this

I think that there is more interest than it seems, but then of course I fully understand you. Can't blame you, only thank you again for you hard work.

@evilrich

Thanks for supporting SDL,many like me many users probably take it for granted that these things just occur which of course they do not, they come our way via the hard work of coders such as yourself.

I think up to date SDL support is very important to AOS4 for several reasons.

1 It opens the possibilty of porting of some good solid software to our platform.

2 It helps AOS join the mainstream of alternative OS' by increasing our visibility and staying up to date with current SDL software (games/apps/tools) etc.

3 It provides an avenue for coders from other platforms a mechanism to support AOS if they choose to do so, or at least make life a bit easier for our coders.

SDL has a reputation for being just that little bit sluggish, can you comment if there is any improvements on the horizon or whether the announced upgraded CPUs will assist in this regard. Many users will probably be oblivious as to exactly what SDL is. Keep up the great work.

Cheers

please dont think that lack of comments means no one uses it! I use sdl_mixer in simpleplay, tons of os4 games are based on sdl, milkytracker is coming to os4 soon, theres a few coders waiting for 3d stuff for more ports....... your work is highly used, but we all just took it for granted! (sorry!)

please continue to develop for us. its much needed. same goes for uae!

People are terrible at 'positive feedback,' and in some cases likely don't even know where the SDL port came from.

Donation and a note sent your way, hopefully others will follow, or at least send you some mails to let you know your work is appreciated!

Now you've done it! You've mentioned UAE, I have been having a bloody ball on that this whole week (non working/sleeping hours), I only just stopped playing to check the forum out. Just re-aquainted myself with King of Chicago tonight, lasted longer than I ever did but got bumped off all the same. I've been overdosing on various Pinaball games, nuking the world with Nuclear War, re-running the American civil war with North and South not to mention Desert Strike, CannonFodder and a million others. SDL or UAE? Hmm tough one, I guess I have enough games working with UAE.......for now -:) SDL development wins..... for the moment. Thanks Rich hopefully you can see I am thoroughly enjoying the fruits of your work. MMMMM donation time again me thinks.

Back to pinball, bye.

Hi evilrich,

SDLBasic???

THAT'S a big deal too, I would think.

Were you working on SuperBase 4? Is that gone into the mist?

BTW, thanks for all the effort you've put into SDL.

(I don't know the full ramifications of having it are, but sounds important.)

@Atheist

I am no coder but SDL is a media library that makes porting of software utilising it far easier across platforms. Many games released for AOS4 utilise SDL many good solid serious applications also use SDL with some upcoming releases mentioned in this thread.

Of course SDL is a living beast amongst all the platforms that it supports but in the end someone has to do it and keep it up to date, I guess that is always going to be a big ask for a small community like ours, especially if we don't recognise what we get and I am as guilty as many others in that regard. There are of course people who just have not yet learnt of these things but hopefully threads like this can educate non coder AOS users to some extent.

cheers

@evilrich

i dont know, i donated towards both sdl and e-uae, i recompiled/ported over 140 games*/demos in a very short period...

if i had more time (like before) i would still do the port mayhem but i don't ...instead i just bug frak or afxgroup to do the stuff i want ...though ia have one project going and that does use sdl optionally but that is a very big project and well, no time...no project for now..

I hope you will find the time and inspiration to continue work on sdl , i know youre a busy man so you have to decide how to prioritize your projects yourself...though if i have any influation on you.. GET ON WITH IT

I've been told that Wesnoth will be much faster once OpenGL is implemented.

@evilrich

The hard work is much appreciated, like other say, there is a lot of software we would not have without it.

@evilrich

Well...
I'm not a developer but only a simple user...
However I like VERY MUCH to see new things (games or programs), on AmigaOS4 every day released!
Than I hope you will contiunue your support for users like me too!
Only thing I dont like of SDL stuffs was that the speed on my G3@666 wasnt so nice in some cases...
But only that.

GOOD WORK!

Tuxedo.

Your work is appreciated, that I can promise you! There are a lot of interesting applications and games using SDL so we definetly need it.

SDL or not? It's easy. What do *you* think? Is it worth the effort compared to OpenGL?

And here's a simpelton who even doesn't know what it IS for! If I did, I would probably thank you for maintaining the port. Hope this helps...

As for feedback: just done the usual tests and it turns out to be just as fast as 1.2.9 used to be

Nope, it's just some custom tests of mine I've been doing since SDL 1.2.6, so it's very easy for me to see how SDL speed develops.
Thanks for the implied helping hand anyway
