Hi,

Has anyone (successfully) tried to use PFS on OS4?

Now my adventure with ZIPs has been concluded, I was surprised with the amount of ZIPs I've got that do not utilise FFS in some form. I think some 7 out of 20 use PFS and then some, a woodcutter's handfull, do use CrossDos.

Anyone?

OldFart

@OldFart
Use SFS or SFS2 instead if at all possible. I have no problems with CrossDOS either since it was fixed for update 4.

@OldFart

PFS will not work under OS4, neither on classic nor on a1, because it relies too much on deprecated BCPL environment.

@OldFart

If you don't have your Classic Amiga any more, you can use PFSsalv to rescue the files from the PFS disks.

Bye,
Thomas

@ssolie, sg2 & thomas

All right, all right. I'll leave it at that.

Phew, that leaves little room for discussion me thinks.

Thanks, and I'll call this case closed.

@ssolie

Will SFS on the Amigaone work with PFS formatted ZIP disks from an A1200? I have the same problem...many of my A1200 ZIP disks are PFS formatted.

Thanks,

Scott

@scabit

Certainly not. You can use SFS on your ZIP disks if you format them with SFS, but all data will be lost if you do that.

If you still have your classic Amiga you can convert the ZIP disks to FFS or SFS if you copy all files to your HDD, reformat the disks with the new file system and then copy all files back. After that the disks mght be accessible on OS4.

Bye,
Thomas

Damn, that's a pity because it's the fastest Amiga file system.
But why does it work with MOS?

@pure_Amiga

Presumably MOS still supports the old BCPL way of addressing? Perhaps it supports direct calls to system resources?

OS4 does not.

My ZIP disks are PFS formatted. I do use PFS sucessfully with OS4 to read all my PFS ZIP disks. I have not used PFS for anything else but it does work with my ZIP disks.

With OS4, I *never* got the supplied FFS Zip mountfiles to work. Yet after installing PFS, I did get all my old PFS Zip disks to work. So for me PFS works much better than the Zip mountfiles that came with OS4 - strange huh !

So yes PFS does work, and for me it is the *only* filesystem that works with Zip

It was ages ago but I think all I had to do was copy pfs3 to l: from my old A1200.

Are you sure ?

Because I use PFS on my A1 to read my Zip disks and it does indeed work !

Look through this thread it might just solve the above.

I think I did see that one but ignored it.after reading it di not bother too much.

You see I don't have a problem with ZIP disks, as long ago I found that I could use all my old PFS formatted ZIP disks on my A1

Wow! I just discovered something really wonderful! I copied my HardDiskAFS
file from my A1200 L: directory to my Amigaone L: directory, and then copied
my A1200 AFS ZIP100 mountlist to my AmigaOne, rebooted the AmigaOne, inserted
an AFS ZIP disk and presto....it works perfectly! I can now read 14 of my 20
ZIP100 disks from my A1200!

My AFS mountlist is as follows:

Surfaces = 2
Blocksize = 512
Interleave = 0
Flags = 0x00000000
Mask = 0x00FFFFFE
Maxtransfer = 0x7FE00
Reserved = 0
Bootpri = -128
BlocksPerTrack = 32
LowCyl = 0
HighCyl = 3071
FileSystem = L:HarddiskAFS
Stacksize = 4000
Priority = 5
GlobVec = -1
DosType = 0x41465301
Buffers = 50
BufMemType = 0
Mount = 1
Activate = 1

Correction. It was one of the fastest Amiga file systems. It is rather pitiful now...
