| Hi
Subject header says it all really
I have a serious problem where random files are broken on one of my partitions. I've had a look for a repair tool, but have been unsuccessful.
The message that I keep getting is "unreadable harddrive format"
thnx

| Not that i know of. I use frying pan and dvdwriter and do regulary backups. Maybe you can rescue some files using partition wizard on os4.

I've tried partition wizard, but it has no "repair" mode for sfs.
It's a shame that I don't have a DVD recorder. My main WB partition is backed up on to CD and so is the importnant data for work. However the partition that's knackered is the games drive. (The old os3 collection is safe, and most definately backed up!)
At this point in time, I am weighing up whether it would be faster to transfer what I can to another drive, or just re-install the software on it.
Would be nice to have some disk tools though! (I'd have thought that they would be given a very high priority when designing an OS) _________________ Independent distributor for the Utility Warehouse Discount Club A1 XE (G4), 512mb (Cos 1gb won't work) Linux YDL3 |

I don't think you can expect any good news. I have stayed with the older FFS rather than SFS for this very reason. SFS2 looks fantastic BUT some recovery tools are surely needed. I am sure they will come with time.

Why not motivate some OS4 coder to port SFSDoctor on OS4 (in order to support differences from SFS MorphOS) ?? Or update the old SFSSalv ?
See http://home.elka.pw.edu.pl/~mszyprow/programy/sfsdoctor/ for Mos version...
I suppose this idea is not new in "red world"...
To me, it's really a shame to should port another time some apps to OS4 instead of share our codes, ideas, etc... between various amiga families (morphos, os4, aros, etc...).

No, you backup SFS partitions to CD/DVD.
"unreadable harddrive format"
Backup your brain to where it first appeared and the last thing you did or didn't do the file/partition.

| @bigdan Doesn't SFSSalv work under OS4? I would have thought it would do, since the disk format is the same (?), and it's a legal 68k program (?).
BTW, does OS4's FFS repair/salvage functionality work for partitions over 4GB? SFS's homepage states: Quote:
There are a lot of recovery tools for FFS available. Most of them however only work with blocksizes of 512 bytes and do not support any of the 64-bit standards which allow for harddrives larger than 4 GB. In other words, if you have a large harddrive or use large blocksizes you may be out of luck the next time your system recovers from a crash. |

| @ChrisH Probably, i am mainly a "MorphOS user" so i couldn't confirm you this point about AOS4.
On Mos 1.4.x, i have just used the 68k SFSSalv 0.9 (18/03/1999) to undelete and recover big SFS partition (30 Gb)... Quote:

In-place disk repair was never a good idea, when you have corruptions, it's best to salvage everything you can, reformat the partition and copy the stuff back. I once had a fauty harddrive in my A4000 and SFSSalv could not recover anything, so I have put the A4k harddrive into the A1 and there PartitionWizard did a great job and recovered 95% of the files from that drive.
Still I recommend using a DVD+/-RW to back up your stuff occasionally, regardless of what filesystem anyone uses (There's built-in support for it in OS4). |

Good News: SFSSalv works on OS4 Bad News: It salvaged all the errors!
Thanks for the tip, I will get round to sorting out this problem soon. Regards_________________ Independent distributor for the Utility Warehouse Discount Club A1 XE (G4), 512mb (Cos 1gb won't work) Linux YDL3 |
