VICE 2.2 xvic.exe and xpet.exe working?

Hello,

Can anyone get xvic.exe or xpet.exe from VICE 2.2 to operate correctly on AmigaOS4, or are they just broken?

When I run xvic.exe from Workbench, I get a requester titled "VICE CPU Jam", with message "Main CPU: JAM at $3716" (address varies), and options "RESET", "HARD RESET", "MONITOR", and "CONTINUE".

If I select "CONTINUE" I wind up with a black VIC screen. No colours or greeting messages. The % speed and fps indicators in the title bar get updated, and I can roam around in the menus and apparently change some settings, but nothing else is happening.

If I select "MONITOR" I get a DSI error, Guru Meditation 80000003. If I Kill the program, my Sam crashes afterward (or did, the last time I did it, when I was typing this message for the first time).

With xpet.exe, the emulation of some models looks OK, but if I select the 2001 or 4032 for example, the keyboard mapping gets very screwed-up. i.e. SHIFT becomes ';', q becomes '2', g becomes 'Y', etc. Not usable at all.

Is it just a problem with a keyboard mapping file? I see amiga_bgrs.vkm and amiga_buks.bkm are keymap files. When I run the "no sound" version of the program, there is a console window left open, and I see that it is loading amiga_buks.vkm for models that work correctly, and amiga_bgrs.vkm for the ones that don't. So maybe I can figure out this problem myself, but maybe someone has a working keymap file for these models?

xvic.exe: TRANSLATE ERROR: ID 1281 was requested, and would be returning NULL.
Black screen. Tried twice, no crashes.

xpet.exe: similar experience.

@Thematic

Thanks for checking.

I haven't had a lot of time to play with this since I first posted, and I kind of forgot about the thread here, but this is what I have discovered so far:

With xvic.exe, if I select "MONITOR" when I get the CPU JAM, I don't know what I'm doing but after typing some things it reported to me that my machine is too slow for the current configuration (don't remember the exact quote). So maybe the emulator CPU JAM is happening on my machine because a 667MHz SAM isn't fast enough to run the VIC-20 emulation? (Wow!)

The xvic.exe version from VICE 2.1 appears to run correctly, but I haven't run much software on it yet to really see. No CPU JAM on start, and I get the expected greeting messages. So it looks like I'll go to VICE 2.1 for now.

Concerning the PET keymaps, I need to experiment with that still. I tried the one from the Windows version of VICE and the QWERTYUIOP line works, so I have copied those lines into the Amiga version of the keymap config, but that's as far as I am right now.

I need more time to play.

xvic does the same here, looking at the log file it seems the sound buffer keeps draining and this is when it says your machine is too slow (I have an 800Mhz A1) though I get simular sound fragmenting problems on my Linux box with vice at 2.2Ghz.
As for the monitor again same happens but for me it also happens with vice 2.1.

I have never played with the PET much but the keyboard issues you have found are also the same. This keyboard issue is also in 2.1.

@robo-ant

To be honest, even the PC ports seemed to be worse than 2.1. I have a lot of sound stuttering or mishaps with WinVICE 2.2 over 2.1 (and that was with both the 32 and 64 bit compiles).

I have not tried xpet though, as I was always a C64/128 user, so those are the two I run the most.

This said, WinVICE doesn't seem to suffer with the errors the OS4 port is suffering with, with respect of the CPU JAM messages. I used to only get that in MagiC64 and Frodo when trying to play games from disk that the emulation couldn't handle. I am wondering if the Amiga OS4 port is suffering with an odd 1541/71 issue causing these messages.
