Mplayer latest version, running on OS4.1 update 2, when I try to run a mpg video

8.RAM Disk:MPlayer/GenericPPC> mplayer ram:someVideo.mpg
Creating config file: /progdir/conf/config
MPlayer SVN-r29532-4.2.3 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team

Playing ram:someVideo.mpg.
MPEG-PS file format detected.

VO: [p96_pip]

Opening video decoder: [mpegpes] MPEG 1/2 Video passthrough
VDec: vo config request - 704 x 576 (preferred colorspace: Mpeg PES)
Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vf scale...
Opening video filter: [scale]
The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
Try appending the scale filter to your filter list,
e.g. -vf spp,scale instead of -vf spp.
VDecoder init failed :(

[AO SDL] Samplerate: 48000Hz Channels: Stereo Format s16be
AO: [sdl] 48000Hz 2ch s16be (2 bytes per sample)
Starting playback...
VDec: vo config request - 704 x 576 (preferred colorspace: Planar YV12)
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is 1.78:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [p96_pip] 704x576 => 1024x576 Planar YV12
Unable to open a windowFATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.

FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo).

Exiting... (End of file)
8.RAM Disk:MPlayer/GenericPPC>

And it does that on the alitvec version too.. If I run it -fs the video runs, but if I double click on the screen to toggle between full screen and Window it Grim Reaps on me. I'll attach a crash log if anyone needs to see it.

It's getting a bit irritating! I'm sure it use to work, I dunno what I did between it working, and not working..

@Stephen_Robinson

Have you rebooted and tried again?

I noticed this sometimes too. It seem to happen if you are low on memory (video memory?). Then when MPlayer has failed once it will never work again until you reboot.

@Deniil715

This is partial OT, aniway

Did you notice that pressing "S" command (for save a grab) and OSD menu doesn't work in MPlayer if it is located in a sub-path ?

For example leave MPlayer in GenericPPC folder, then open MPlayer GUI (using this path "GenericPPC/MPlayer", then finally open a video of your choice and try to activate OSD etc ..

@samo79
By default, the configuration is read from PROGDIR:conf (directory). This also includes the actual fonts, so OSD is gone. The screenshot capability needs a filter (-vf screenshot).

Yes, it's a very weird bug that has already occured to me.

I'll give you one solution, a weird one :

1° Deactivate everything in Startup-Manager
2° Reboot your Amiga
3° Launch MPlayer and check if it's using P96_PIP instead of SDL (since MPlayer cannot access P96_PIP, it reverts to SDL and you get the behaviour you describe), this should normally be the case
4° Reactivateone by one all your Startup Manager elements, rebooting everytime you reactivate one
5° Test MPLayer each time you reboot
6° At the end, all should work ok

This did the trick for me when I encountered the exact problem you have.

Odd, isn't it ?

@Stephen_Robinson

It could be that there are not enough free pens on the screen.
Try to lower the image quality settings in Prefs/Workbench and Prefs/WBPattern.

Works for me. I've always had MPlayer separated from MPlayer-GUI. I get OSD and screen shots end up in RAM:. But you need the conf dir for OSD etc in the same directory as mplayer, you cannot have mplayer alone in a "GenericPPC" drawer.

@ZeroG

Pens? MPlayer hardly use the 256 or so pens to draw its video data.

Pens?

Yes, the P96 PiP-Mode seems to need free pens. There is even a errorcode for that:

#define PIPERR_OUTOFPENS (4) /* couldn't get a free pen for occlusion */

@ZeroG

Not quite sure how, but I changed the wallpaper, sorry, WBpattern, rebooted and it's working..

I'd also changed the icon quailty to poor,and installed the SDl at about the same time, and I've put everything back to how it was and it's still working..

So sorry, I'm not much help in troubleshooting!

Now to stop the program from GR when it goes to the second item on a playlist while in full screen..

edit: Correction, with Icons images set to 'good' quility Mplayer works, set to 'best' it fails to open window.

And that's the end of that chapter..

And thanks for the help guys.

Wild guess...see the post before yours. I'll bet "best" uses more pens than "good".
My question would be "how many pens and/or which pens need to be free to not kill P96 PIP?"

Is this define in MPlayer or P96?
If it's in MPlayer it might be some legacy code lingering. If it's P96 it should be rewritten to never require any pens for hi/true colour screens at least. Requiring pens for overlay sounds like a stupid design (today) and may simply be some legacy code from (very) old days.

@thread

Just made the same adjustments mentioned in this thread and:
this thread

I now have overlay (PIP) working with MPlayer (latest) on OS4.0 final, which had never worked before for me.

(1)Eliminated OS4reboot program from wbstartup
(2)unlocked my locked palette
(3)re-locking palette and running MPLayer killed PIP again
(4)unlocking palette restored it

Ergo, this has nothing to do with which version of OS4.x is being run.
Still adding things back to wbstartup to see if there are any other troublemakers. heh.

The version included with AMC is over a year old, and sadly one of the versions that crashes.

@ZeroG

Found another interesting conflict.
If you've read my posts, you know I only got PIP working recently due to the other conflicts we have discussed.
Prior to having PIP working under OS4.0, warpview (1st version V0.9) always worked for me, but not for some other folks.
I thought I would try it again, now that I have PIP working.
I got a blank screen and an error message in window on WB.

Then I searched AW and saw this

Quote:
Perhaps I'm wrong but what I understood from the Amiwest talk with Ben, Hans-Joerge and Thomas was that it is not just Warp 3D that is to be replaced. Graphics libaray will be rewritten and Picasso96 replaced. I got that Picasso96 and Warp3D currently fight for resources and part of the cause is an inherent problem with the Picasso96 API.

So...apparently it is not just those of us testing that have noticed certain conflicts and acknowledged a need for replacing Picasso96.

(btw, a later version of warpview cured this particular ill)
