It has been a long time now since this "alpha" version of Timberwolf was available. Is it at least in a "beta" state now? When is it going to be released?

@realize

Below is taken from the bounty site

Quote:
we are getting closer to having a usable Timberwolf 4. Even though it currently is only using pure software rendering (for drawing and composition), it's become usable, and already better than the original alpha version of 3.5 that we released previously.

Stability is OK, although not great yet (sadly, the browser was just crashed when I made the screenshot of the WebM video). Speed is still an issue, although a recent non-debug build is actually usable, even for script and graphics heavy websites.

So in essence, we're close to releasing a new test version. I don't want to give a date, though, since the speed at which I progress depends on too many factors.

Stay tuned for more updates.

@Fairdinkem

Thanks for the update. This is the most important project for Amiga NG OS4 efforts imho.. They should really put more emphasis on getting this beta out the door. I have a feeling they will release it along with X1000 for a nice dramatic launch.

That would be a nice idea, if it is finished for the release of the First Contact X1000's.

I played around with Timberwolf on Steve Solie's X1000 at last Oct. AmiWest 2011 show and it seemed pretty snappy and rendered well on that machine. Can't say how it would perform on any SAM, or other AmigaOne systems.

Trevor was showing it to me himself and knew a bunch of websites that were very heavy with images and videos, so it was a pretty good test of what Timberwolf is capable of. Also a good test of that the AmigaOne X1000 is capable of.

It would be nice to see a new video demo of Timberwolf on YouTube that shows the progress they have made over the last few months.

On the bounty page says:

5355.88 EUR Out of 5613.69 EUR originally submitted.

Does that mean that we need 257.81 Euros to?

With all due respect to all involved, why is this firefox port so important when you already have the amazing MuiOwb from fab, and if we play our cards right we may get odyssey. I will qualify this by saying i do not like the bloated firefox and chrome is way better.

I would rather the talented friedens work on the os, although timberwolf may be a nice distraction for them in which case we all benefit.

Lets not forget what we have, instead of pining for things coming, all in good time.

Well, Timber is nearly finished...so let's have it. The more the better. It would be a bit of a waste to stop it.

I like OWB but also netsurf, both need improvements.

I think get Timber out and let the Friedens concentrate on the OS.

Can anyone port Chrome too

@cha05e90

rofl, me too!

@realize

I can't understand what exactly makes Timberwolf so important, when we have MUIOWB and we should focus on getting MUI up to date and fully compatible with Morphos. What MuiOWB lacks? We should iron out the bugs, not move to an entirely new product! OK, perhaps the fact that I don't like FF and I use Opera instead maybe a reason, lol, but if people expect to fully customize Timberwolf with hundreds of available add-ons then they will find out to be sluggish, even on my Intel dual core. Meaning that for an equal web browsing experience between FF on PC and TW on Amiga you *will* need to have the adequate horsepower be it RAM and/or cpu.

@clusteruk

But Timberwolf is said to be about as fast as muiowb and muiowb is no speedy browser either? At least not on my A1 XE (G4 800MHz). Chrome on the x86 is fast, yes but they got JIT for javascript which we don't have. When it comes to speed I use NetSurf because it's faster and allows CSS to be displayed. I use that browser only unless I need to visit something that it can't handle, then I use muiowb.

I like muiowb a lot but options is always good. Also on my PC I haven't seen much different speedwise between firefox and chrome but I do get lots of more spyware if I use chrome. Not an issue on Amiga but I think that it's missleading to compare chrome with muiowb since javascript will be a lot slower on AOS no matter what browser gets ported.

Also regarding the "all plugins" comment... I use one plugin and that is adblocker plus and if anything it speeds up browsing since the adds doesn't have to load. It doesn't slow down the browser, at least not that plugin.

Also options are good, right? Now that the port is almost done why complain, be happy :) .

And it seems like we will finally be able to watch some youtube clips within the browser. I suspect that it will be slow but still. I'd say wait and see how well it runs.

@clusteruk and Cool_amigaN

AmigaOS4 MUIOWB (WebKIT) can't play any YouTube yet, i hope Kas1e/Fab/Andrea and co can do something about that, and some times MUIOWB uses a lot of CPU power and slows down my system, Problems whit Google presentation.

FireFox / TimberWolf can play WebM video formats on YouTube whit out FLASH.

There are 3 -4 web engine out there that all web browsers use, even on PC you can't display all web pages whit the same web browser, FireFox is one of the browsers web designers try to support.

IE and Firefox used to have control of the market, to day it its Chrome (WebKit) and FireFox, IE is losing market as many of web pages are deigned for Chrome and FireFox and not IE, because many web pages have choiced Free alterentives Linux / Apache / PosgreSQL / MYSQL / PHP.

Timberwolf is not 'just' about the browser. It is more about the technology
it will bring with it.

Just as Aweb has fallen way behind mainstream web tech, many other
browsers need special attention to keep up with it. Many of the newer
technologies will be supported by mozilla and thus easier to include
in Timberwolf. It's a never ending project.
