Since A1X1K's are shipped out to people who aren't under NDA, what tools are available for developing software for the xs1-l2 chip on the motherboard? Are there libraries on the AOS side of the fence ready to use? Have some of the tools from XMOS been ported over? Also, are the end user machines shipping out with a pcb in the "Xorro" slot to drag some IO out to the back of the machine for ease of access?

None, zero, nada on the FC systems.

I would guess those who install linux could find tools for it. The XMOS slot is empty, but it's also a pci-e x1 slot, so not a waste.

Be kind of silly to buy one just because it has an XMOS chip.

The First Contact systems were not supposed have everything supported under 4.1. There are at least a few other important* features such as 3D acceleration that aren't there either. I think it would be better to revisit this subject when 4.2 is released.

*how important xcore might be remains to be seen.

@sundown

XMOS supports linux on their toolchain, but it's compiled for x86, so PPC linux won't get you their stuff for zero effort. Some of their open sourced parts should be pretty trivial to get running on it though. Sadly that won't get you XC.

Would be easier to just do the work on another machine that way you wouldn't have to reset the box every time you want to test the code on AOS 4.

@Rob

That's kind of weird considering that it gives the name of the machine and is one of the main selling points and most unique feature of it. What is 'X'? X is apparently the thing that's not supported...

Well, First Contact with new civilization is just the beginning. More things to come, stay tuned. SAM users also waited quite a lot to get the FPGA Resource.

That is modern Amiga style ... Seems nowadays hardware comes first and then OS takes time to catch up ...

Hope that after OS 4.2 such practices will belong to the past.

You are the expert, I have never used linux myself, but many others have. I hope when the time comes, you'll be willing to help. I just don't see much happening in that area in the next 6 months, we're still trying to understand how this beast works.

You have no idea how different the x1000 is from any other system running 4.1, a walk in the park it is not. Getting os4 optimized & working has top priority.

Edit: my spelling sucks..

Information on the A-EON site seems to be unclear about the third physical pci-e x1 slot. It only mention 2 pci-e x1 slots in the specs but the Zorro section only mentions the physical 8x slot.

Look at the Namo Tech Ref Manual architecure, 2 slots, first is PCIe x1 & goes to the PA6T, second slot goes to the XMOS chip. You either have a PCI card there or an XMOS card.

@sundown,

Looks to me as a really crafty fellow can "bridge the gap".

I would be more interested about the status update of the developer tools porting.
Anything done yet?
Any xena/xorro SW/HW demo planned for 2012?
