Hello everyone,

just want to inform that we are looking for capable programmers to form a "software porting team", to port as much software possibile to Amiga OS.

During the past years i contacted several ex-amigans (with the help of the tireless Amitv), which have become over time great developers producing great software (mainly games).
For this reason, i collected various source code of game and software (with the authors permission) that can be ported to AmigaOS, Aros and MOS too.

One of this software was "Equilibrio", came to us thanks to afx and ACube (and DK-Games, of course). There are other software and games (even famous name).

To port all these software, of course, programmers are needed. Andrea afxgroup can't do all the job alone (altough he's a monster porter or the lord of the port :P).

I think that a team of 5 or six programmers should suffice These programmers should also sign (where required) an NDA to protect the authors of the source code.

So, what you think about this?

Good idea. Especially if you have secured access to some interesting titles already. I don't have time or energy to take part. But good idea and I wish good luck.

@AmigaBlitter

a good idea and a welcome one , i used to be part of a similar thing back in the 200x time but that never really "took off".

done my share of ports but i have trouble getting back into it as there is too little "interesting" titles that is easy to aquire, looking forward to see what you have in route for us. (open source stuff is only fun doing for.... so long)

It would be nice to have some nice software titles. Some day ago I realized that there are too few car and sport games for A OS.

I made some digging and realised that it is difficult to find possible titles. Internet is like famous haystack and needle.

Possible means, mini gl is enough, no exotic languages, at last from amiga point of view. etc.

Like this http://www.1amstudios.com/projects/openc1/ it is best car game ever or at lest I like it really much ;) , but really difficult to make it run A OS. This would require open gl http://code.google.com/p/vdrift-ogre/

This was one I found wich could be quite easy http://zod.sourceforge.net/ Aros port already and SDL

There are several car games and even football game wich would require real open gl to run.

Point of this is, what we need to have complete game selection. Currently we don't have car and sport games, that why couple of them could be nice.

Quite good list of open sourc games http://www.lgdb.org/

@AmigaBlitter

regarding AROS there are a couple of programmers there with lots of experience. When you are really interested to get specialists from other camps too I would recommend to post on aros-exec too.

I am right now contacting former amiga-developers (expecially game developers) and inform them about AROS. Some are still in the business and partly did not know that there is still development at all. I think there is a good chance that when one platform is supported that others could be supported too (at least when all components like MESA are available on all platforms).

Don't know if you've looked but http://sourceforge.net/ holds a great list of Open Source applications

@AmigaBlitter

the problem is not adapting a little of the source-code but missing dependencies, f.e. not full mesa support and not available engines.

@OlafS25

Choosed the game compatible with the current MiniGL level. Other requiring updated Mesa library are in "freeze state"

The list should be IMHO shared that way it'll reduce if not eliminate duplicate ports

@AmigaBlitter

there are a number of good game porters in the Aros camp. So make a thread on aros-exec.org and explain what you think of

While Im all for any initiative to help amiga/amiga-oid platforms get more software Im a little unsure exactly whats going on here.

Is the idea to port existing open source projects, or is it to also get versions of some closed source software too. Or perhaps to open up sources to software whose sources were previously not available? Maybe a mix of all options?

Also, prehaps at least one person from each "camp" would be a good idea. All 3 "NG" camps have different dependencies covered to different degrees, and because of this it can sometimes be easier to port to any one of os4/mos/aros. Having porters from all platforms could help progress for each platform at different times in my opinion.

Anyway, good luck with it, but perhaps a little clarification and elaboration as to exactly what the idea is could be handy.
