Descent 2 - which version is best for OS4.1?

Hi,

I have been enjoying the Demo files of Descent 2 using the SDL based game engine available on OS4Depot Descent D2X

However, with OS4.1 u 6, I occasionally get a DSI error on starting the game (which I ignore and it seems okay), and then I seem to get an ISI error when, for example, I go to a new level such as the secret level at the red door.
I am running it in 800x600 full screen mode with the -nocdrom and -fixfps options active.

I am interested in getting the full version of Descent 2 - this game is a lot of fun, and was wondering if I should try this version: AmigaSoft Descent 2

The AmigaSoft version seems to require the 3 CD version of Descent 2, which leads me to ask...how many versions of Descent are there and what is the difference? The 3 CD version sells for around $40 used on amazon.com, but I can get the regular descent 2 CD (single CD) for about $5 on Amazon.

So, here is what I'd like to know.

1) Does the OS4depot version work okay with the full version of Descent 2 available on a single CD from Amazon for $5?

2) Does the AmigaSoft version work perfectly with OS4.1 u 6 (if I buy the 3 CD version of Descent 2)? Is this the same game as the single CD version but with extended graphics or what?

Thanks!

Scott

@scabit

amigasoft is descent free space 2 ... it is a totally different game from descent 2...

The 3 cd version of descent 2 is the collector edition, with extra and music but the game is only one cd.

Ahhh... okay, that's what I thought. i like the Descent 2 that has the 6 directional movement. Loads of fun.
Does anyone know how well the full version of Descent 2 works using the SDL game code available from OS4depot?

Thanks!

Scott

Freespace 2 20th anniversary edition is on 3 CDS. It has extra missions and only 2000 was released. Box here is labeled 1337.

It would be nice if the first Freespace intro could be updated to standard of the PC version which has higher detail as there a lot more faster amigas out there, and if possible support the expansion pack Silent Threat.

I have a working installation of Descent D2X. Or at least I had, since I don't know if it still works past Update 2, when I checked it last time. The game has a "cracking" sound effect and in general it was slow (somewhat playable at 640x480 only, on a Sam440ep m-ITX @ 667Mhz, which on a 19 inch monitor looked ridiculous). My proposal is to find a 5 years old PC, install D2X and download / unpack the HiRes textures pack. It gives a fresh and (semi)modern look on an aged game.

Well, it DOES work well on the AmigaOne...except for the DSI error. I figured out that the secret level isn;t supposed to be supported (?) in the demo version I am using...so for some reason when I go through the door the code locks up. But i have played the three working levels of Descent 2 to the end in the demo version, and at 800 x 600 screen mode it is VERY fast on my micro A1 at 800 MHz. I limited the frame rate to 50 fps to see if it would help, but it does not seem to make a difference with the DSI error.
I imagine running it on an X1000 would be amazingly fast.

I think I will get the $5 cd ofDescent 2 with the full 30 levels and see if it works okay with the D2X SDL engine created by the Friedens.
And yes, there is an AGA port being worked on for old school Amigas by the amazing Nova Coder...who has done Quake 2 and other ports. I think he says they require a 68060 processor to be playable, but someone posted they can play one of the FPS games well with a fast 68040 card. He is doing great work porting these games to the older Amigas.

i dont know what graphic render use this game ... warp 3d? if you are using wazp probably the dsi is because of this, you have to check the wazp configuration...
if you are using the warp 3d , try to increase the stack.
if this game are using sdl... is better cry

From readme: "the game only supports software rendering". It's SDL as the name suggests.

Okay, looks like the DSI problem was caused in part to my starting the program from ToolsDaemon - the 68k tool that allows use of custom Workbench pulldown menus. When I leave out the icon to start the game and start it from the workbench icon, I seldom get DSI errors.
I have ordered the $5 copy of Descent 2 from Amazon.com. I'll let you know how it goes when I install it!
I'm looking forward to a lot more 3D dizzying fun!

I haven't used ToolsDaemon recently (probably never on OS4), but it may have started Descent 2 with too little stack. Now that I played it, 1 MB stack, I don't think I ever had an error, certainly not today. Perhaps 500000 bytes, which the icon seems to have, is slightly low?

Thanks...I'll give it a try adding more stack and see how it runs. I think toolsDaemon might use a much smaller stack size when it starts a program and thus was causing the DSI errors I was seeing.

Thanks

I got the Descent II CD yesterday and installed it. It runs just fine with the SDL version for Amiga OS4 from the Friedens.
I need to donate a little bit to their paypal account I think......

I've been really enjoying Decent II on my micro A1 for over a week now. This is a fun game! I am at level 7 (my 8 year old son is at level 9 ).
I play it in 800x600 mode, and notice that when I go to the map function using the TAB key it comes back to the game screen with some graphics corruption - typically "black" areas that look like square pixelatted holes in random parts of the walls or surfaces. Anyone else seen this?
Overall, the speed is really good - very fast (sometimes I think too fast!) and the graphics are good.
