Yes, but who in their right mind would use DVI for *analogue* when you can have much better *digital* instead? And DVI monitors will default to digital unless analogue signal is only supplied for some strange reason.

U-Boot for SAM does not yet support DVI-D |
This is NOT true AFAIK, since I can use Uboot fine with my (DVI-D only) KVM. Maybe it once was true, but not now it seems.Last edited by ChrisH on 29-Dec-2008 at 10:34 AM.

| Reading these topic it seems that using VGA to DVI converter:
1. Some people are having problems with sub-standard picture quality
2. Others' work just fine
I assume that people are using the converter which comes with the SAM440.
I have read somewhere that some guy had the same problem but fixed it by using an Apple VGA to DVI converter... maybe someone can shed some light on this?

| bad qualitiy means:
- Icons/all edges having light shadows if you look close - Fonts are not as sharp as they are on my Laptop
but to be honest, its all readable/workable its more an optic/eycandy thing. Using a cheap manual KVM switch (not the electronic ones !!!) would be worse by far than what I have got.
Guess the internal VGA Port will give a far better picture, but as I understood you need a special cable and backplate with VGA connector (just like those USB PCI slotplates just for VGA....). I donnot know where I can get that, I am still working on it.

On the PCI gfx card, U-Boot will enable VGA output and VGA-over-DVI output. Digital DVI output doesn't work correctly right now (the monitor will show an out of range message) but become usable when the OS loads and correct the settings.

This is only for an external PCI gfx card, for the onboard M9 U-Boot supports Digital DVI, VGA over DVI and VGA since July 2008 _________________ Massimiliano Tretene, ACube Systems, Soft3 |

I don't have problems with the DVI->VGA converter, although I still get some minor shadows or idles on workbench. But it's very hard to spot them. _________________

Crystal clear quality here, on a 22" LCD with DVI connection.

| It seems that the DVI-VGA-Adaptor that comes with the SAM440ep has no good quality. In my case the Problem was solved after connect the Sam440ep directly to DVI-Input with DVI-Cable.

Well that doesnt automatically mean that its the converter's fault. Try another converter. _________________

For me, the display is really good on my VGA 17'' LCD screen using the DVI-VGA adaptator.
I haven't checked it on a DVI monitor yet but i assume the difference won't be important. |

| What screen resolutions would OS4.1 on SAM support?
Specifically would it do 1440 x 900.... _________________

Yes, you should be able to use all native resolutions without problems. I have had mine at 1920*1200*32

| Ok I have some news from Acube about the VGA looking bad problem.
Here is the email I sent to acube:
"I have recently ordered a Sam440 which I plan to use with a VGA Monitor (It does not have a DVI connector).
I have been reading on forums that a lot of people are having problems with DVI to PCI converter, getting a low quality picture. It has been suggested that the monitor is connected directly to the onboard vga connector on SAM440, but a special cable is needed.
Can you please tell me what do you think about this DVI to PCI converter problem, and also, where to get this special cable?"
This is their reply:
"We don't know yet what the problem could be (the more probable hypothesis is a problem of impedance with some monitors cable).
Anyway there are at least two solutions: one is to use an internal VGA cable (we may supply this cable free of charge in case it's needed) and the other one is to use an upcoming IO backplate expansion board which will cover additional audio in/out, usb and internal VGA connectors."
I guess this clears a few things.... _________________
