I know the feeling. I had a weird problem after installing update 3.Had lockups. Thought that It was a hard drive problems and swapped about 4 different hard drive before pointing a finger at the video card. Problems seems to have been caused by possible CPU overheating because it went away after reattaching an inside case fan that blows air across the CPU.
Only other suggestion I can make is to reinstall OS 4 on an SFS2 partition with a block size of 512 instead of 2048 .

Yeah, I'm in pain.....
These are my old disks from my XE, filled with programs, projects, music, videos, photos and so on.
I want them on my Sam disk, Do I need them, most of it yes.
I could leave them on an external disk, but it SHOULD work !!
Moving LARGE amounts of data is not the problem, the problem is moving data at all ! (It isnt that moving lots of dat makes it more apparent, there is a problem) And right now I only do it because of testing purposes
And last but not least, I do NOT trust my system when behaving like this.
But thanks for your sympathy...
Cheers

can we do a poll of the block size we use on our SFS2 boot partitions ?
I use 512 .

i know that pain because in early days of deneb (i ve bought one as soon as it was available) there was few problems, among them copying large files on some setups in dma mode due to a buster bug as far as i remember. it was caused by constant high throughput otherwise not noticeable. i could have switched back to pio but i was really eager to get it working reliably so i have molested the manufacturers without mercy. meanwhile it has been fixed i dont even noticed when..
so i can understand you, but otherwise would really establish a backup volume with all that data and load only the most neccessary files so that next to testing you can actually start to use your system. in case something screws then you do not waste your whole work.
thinking of it because of that my previous 68k experience with deneb/poseidon, how is the usb and sata driven on a sam? i suppose sata has not yet been dma enabled, so its in pio mode whichever it would be. if there are problems with it maybe the mode chosen is to high? and what about usb? if its running dma, maybe this is causing problems, so it could be disabled to see if pio will be more reliable?
sorry if this is bullshit, i have no expertise on it, just thoughts.. |

| The harddrive is new, and not all partitions seem to be affected by this.
Anyway, I've got an UPDATE on my USB sitiuation:
I took my first install of update 2 (I always backup before every major change I make on my SYS partition) and then installed update 3.
Rebooted with my original/existing mouse/kb setup. They both ceased to function. Then attached the USB mouse and kb I tried earlier, rebooted, anf low and behold.... they where recognised and now they work ! Also USB2 seems to work.
Beats me why it wouldnt work earlier when I tried this kb and mouse Perhaps someting went wrong updating to upd 3 ??
But why ? Thats what I need to find out next, also because I want my original kb, and mouse to work together with my KVM switch. But for now it will do
Cheers,
Martin

i think this update politics make the situation messy, updates should not require previous updates, just replace *all* components of a basic or updated install that may be faulty. this way you would always be on the safe side whatever subversion of the system you install you update over.

| I plugged in my 'original' kb/ms setup while running OS4 (you know, that USB to 2x PS2 adapter, KVM switch etc..) The adapter was recognised, and the kb works now, but the mouse only does up and down, sort off...
It does more then earlier with my upd 4 install.... I feel I'm getting somewhere Last edited by Metalheart on 06-Mar-2012 at 08:00 PM.

Depends. I really like the current update scheme and never had a problem with it (not SAM, not with my Peg2). In contrast to that I really disliked the Update 1 because that was a clean, new install. Had no fun re-integrating everything I had to get up a working system after that.

actually i dont see so much problem. take me testing aros 68k as example. i have to reinstall the system practically every other day. lazy as i am, i use usually the same drive all the time and i have of course installed third party 68k software and components, to test in their respective directories like for instance libs: or additional classes in classes/zune which is equivalent to mui/libs on aos 68k. it is usually completely safe to copy just the whole another nightly over, since it doesnt contain settings in env-archive and i can just go on with an up to date system and see what has been fixed and what has been broken. just only sometimes my custom setup gives different behaviour than a clean system, but then it frequently leads to bugs being discovered, that would otherwise remain unknown if everybody was testing with a same clean setup. | Update:
Installed update 4, got some garbled Uboot tekst, but ir seems to work fine so far.
USB2 still seems to work fine, copying from HD (IDE to USB adapter), quite a lot faster then without USB2.
Kb/mouse still work with my orignal setup (all those adapters and KVM) Altough not at first when booted, but after some reconnecting the do work.
I formatted (not quick) both drive partitions that seemed to be giving me a headache. But I think the problem was something else. I have to check it though, but ut looks like the fault was not with the HD but with the files themselfs (is that possible ??)
I had a games partition on my XE, wich I copied across to my Sam, everytime I tried moving them to another place the block errors seem to show up, but they did not when copying other files NOT from that games partition. Even if they were on the same partition that supposed to give me troubles.
For now I leave those games on the old IDE drive til I'v got everything configured on the Sam, and istalled all neccesary aplications. I almost never play games anyway...
So... We;re getting there.... to be continued....

So it looks like the errors are on the old IDE drive not the new SATA one.

Well, yeah, I guess.
But those block errors occured when moving those files around on the Sams drive partitions and not on the old IDE drive (from wich they came).
So I think those files (some of them) might have been corrupted, and copying them gave block errors. Is that likely ?

| Update:
My kb and mouse keep working even after rebooting or power off
So everything seems to be solved now.
I think something went wrong updating to upd 3 and 4 And those block errors, gone ! It was definately some corrupt files causing that.
Right now I can concentrate on installing my old programs back. And getting the system customised and streamlined.
I will later on, write a little review about installing, upgrading, trouble shooting, installing other apps and using the Sam.
Thanks all, who helped me getting here
Cheers

| It appears my USB problem are back..... sort of....
Now and then when boting my mouse or kb or both dont work. Not even those USB ones directly connected to the rear USB ports.
So, back to the beginning, or atleast to the point where it all seemed to work.
Very tiresome..... ***some swearing***
Also sometimes I get a very low screen resoltion at boot. And sound crackles, but I understand that is due unfinished audio drivers.
(updated radeon and sound driver)

What do you mean "my kb/mouse stops working", exactly? Is it a usb drop out (for example, does the caps lock led on the kb powers off)? Because in this case, it is a common problem of the OS. _________________

Well, sometimes after booting they do not work at all, or the mouse only does vertical in a weird way. Have to reboot sometimes twice to get it working again.
I have two mice connected now, sometimes the wired one works, and sometimes the wireless does. or both together.
I thought it was a hub problem or that something went wrong updating my systen to upd 4, but those problems still exist, be it less severe. Last edited by Metalheart on 12-Mar-2012 at 08:25 PM.

I was wandering, if there is a Linux available for the Sam 460 boards, have you tried installing it ? That would be one way to try to determine if the problems you are having are OS4 software related or if it is a hardware problem. Also, I have an Aone XE-G3 and when I've had heat related problems (marginal cpu cooler/fan combo) I've had all kinds of strange stability problems including mouse & keyboard problems.

Are you still using the PS2 adepter crap? Hope your using original USB internal cables, not some home made crap like TonyW did. I also suggest you use backports, hope your not using usb extender cables. If you have roller ball mouse I suggest you try cleaning it.
And also you should try different PSU one that’s higher quality maybe some one that has Sam460 or Acube-System can help you whit what PSU model you should buy.
For audio I guess you need to wait for updated audio drivers or get SoundBlaster Live PCI/Combo card.
If you can't get it working I suggest you return it to Acube-System under warranty so they can check it out. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 12-Mar-2012 at 10:59 PM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 12-Mar-2012 at 10:58 PM.
