It's also pretty good for running FS-UAE and hosting AROS

Fs-uae run better than Quad G5 with Linux or Osx ...

And Aros run well on Qemu or if too crezy on OsX in kvm that run VirtualPC who run Aros

Because linux cover that gap of software that you dont have on Os4 .Example :
If you need Libre Office you can have it running on X5000 under linux , and you have the drivers on linux about printers (professional too) and the buethoot and wifi cards...

Im happy for have linux working on x5000 ... because made me understand the real performances of this hardware .

The same you can do with X1000 and Tabor and 460

Here's a valid question then if there are two teams one doing Linux and the other doing OS4. Will Linux support stop development once OS4.1 / 2 is on the same level as Linux. Eg once OS4 has SMP and full GFX support why would there be any need for Linux?

1. Hardware vendor has to verify the new hardware's feature set works as advertised.

2. Linux is a good baseline OS that anyone outside the AmigaOS community can understand.

3. Multiple options are good not bad. The Commodore-Amiga 3000UX has Unix option, hence I expect NG Amiga offerings would have similar option.
It's a no brainier that Linux runs better(with close source drivers and apps**) on cheaper X86. A hobby doesn't need to be logical.

**Valve's SteamOS is based on Linux X86 with close source X86 commercial games. Linux camp hasn't figured out a fast CPU abstraction layer.

Can one dual-boot Linux and OS4? If so, that alone is a great reason to have Linux on the X5000 - use it like Mac users use bootcamp.

@Seiya

this release is only possible to install on usb pen because the kernel is really old and dont support the lan of x5000 ... kernel 3.16.
the kernel 4.4 perfect support x5000 im waiting for a new distro.
about the bench ... 5020 2ghz is more powerful in integer compared 970MP 2.5ghz and more powerful compared P6T 1.8 ghz in all.
X5000 will be the perfect replacment of x1000

Is there some kind of available hypervisor under this Linux platform (whatever hypervisor is).

maybe proxmox?

Actually, KVM is the Hypervisor of choice for Linux. It's built in to the kernel, and works fine.

Lack of strict HAL/ACPI, CPU ISA and Firmware standards on PowerPC stops existing unmodified OS to run on newer/alternative PowerPC motherboards/CPUs. You don't get this stupidity on ACPI enabled X86 PC i.e. I can get an existing OS without modification to run on the latest Intel Skylake PC.

I am wondering are there any possiblty of usin linux drivers by AmigaOS direclty. May be an interface layer can be adapted to use native linux drivers??? Seems like linux drivers are more easy to developed by many people even it is for PPC.

i dont know how the new amiga os 4 kernel was done but from linux it took the .so structure . right now on linux ppc the gallium is 0.4 and the mesa are 11.07 version.
Only Hans can explain if it possible or the Frieden.
But isnt not a simple job because the xorg core call need to be totally rewrite for the workbench and the xorg-server-video-radeon too for use the radeonhd.kmod (or other gpu) Is not so simple but can done but are need more devs for sure .

for example on OsX is much more simple because it have already X server inside of it

Tests with MorphOS show single core speed of X5500 is in most cases under (single core) perfomance of a 7447 per MHz. Making a 2GHz X5000 only a tad faster than a Mac mini 1.5Ghz on these tests. Not really overwhelming - unfortunately.

https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=11137&forum=11&start=228

But let's wait for better benchmarks (e.g. MPlayer, lame, Quake3, 68k emulation, peacekeeper or sunspider) to draw final conclusions.[quote]

For my experience the X5000 run faster than X1000 with Altivec and little slower than Quad G5 in fpu .

Exactly. These are benchmarks I wouldn´t use for comparison (probably except dnetc). Could someone not bound by NDA try DosBox? Eg. dhry2od benchmark from this package: http://www.roylongbottom.org.uk/dostests.zip (CPU cycles = max)

We have numbers for G4, G5 and PA6T. This could be good comparison of application performance (emulation in this case).
