| @TheDaddy I left GLMatrix running for 1 hour 10 minutes (on an 800x600x32 screen), and the DVI output was still perfectly fine. Fraid that I cannot check inside my Sam440 easily. _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |

You may HAVE to use a special I/O backplate to access the internal VGA of the Sam440, since it appears this may be (the only?) hardware flaw in current version of Sam440's. I hope you take account of this in your case design for the Sam440...
Before one gets angry, take a look at all the problems with the AmigaOnes... If this is the only flaw, it is a very minor one by comparison, and probably easy to work-around.Last edited by ChrisH on 02-Feb-2009 at 04:01 PM.

| @AmigaBlitter I use the DVI output too, and the quality is also fine (great even). Only VGA seems to be a problem. _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |

Just got my Sam going yesterday (it's been sitting on the shelf since Christmas). Works a treat. It's an older 533 MHz Rev C board with upright ATX connector (one of the original Summer Follies).
My TFT monitor is an Acer AL1717 (1280x1024). Using the VGA input through the supplied DVI-VGA adaptor, the screen resolution is perfect.
I haven't tried the DVI input of the monitor, but then, what's the point?

I am happy for you.
But other SAMs (recent ones without the FPGA connector and other stuff) don't display properly on CRT VGA using the adapter, and it's not the adapter it's the motherboard.
I'll see if I can get a DVI only TFT...but this is freaking annoying. More money to spend!

I don't think the absence of unused special connectors is pertinent. My Sam doesn't have any of them, either.

That is debatable.
Someone, one day, might come up with a really cool FPGA expansion and at that point we are screwed.
Also I was just thinking, have we paid the same price for a SAM that has got less on?

I'll open the case and see what is and isnt on the board. as far as i know it's a recent one - It only arrived a couple of weeks ago.

mine appears to have the fpga on - assuming it's the lattice LFXP6C 4FN256C-31 chip near the battery corner of the board?
edit - see below - read what you meant about the connectors... Last edited by RockDemon on 06-Feb-2009 at 04:47 PM.

JUst went back and saw this :
After choosing Screenblanker = GLMatrix
I left for about 20 minutes, I went back and the GLMatrix was still running....fine I thought.
I went back 40 minutes later and it was still running but it was all fuzzy, like a non tuned television.
I had this on a geforce card when the fan gave up on windows. Could be overheating...
Also read about the connectors. mine is the same as yours. My guess is that connectors are expensive and they're unlikely to ever get used as although the sam has this, no othe PPC amiga does, so it's probably pointless to us users. |

THAT IS IT! That is what happens to mine.
See? THANK YOU! I am not mad! There is something not right with the latest batch of SAMs then...I think one of the chips overheats, which one I don't know.
I am not sure what to do, I might just send it back.

I am just worried about future expansions. As Chris said, imagine if Commodore to save some cents decided to dump the clock pins on the A1200 motherboard.
Also why do I have to pay the same money as the fully loaded SAMs?
What if some clever person comes out with an FPGA expansion?
Let me know your thoughts. _________________ www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |

First post here with my classic (but just used the SAM during one hour).
- DVI to SVGA is dirty. vertical grey lines around borders of window and on the screen. Verry dirty and verry diseapointed
- No J7-J8-J4-J10 and J27 Received hardware not same as the Acube description on their site ??? Not read recently but strange missing connectors on the MB.
- Playing with DVplayer. Slow down with real widescreen (16/9) DVD movies. No slowdown with little less widescreen format. Used DVPplayer from AOS4.1. 1. DVplayer bug or small CPU ?? 2. DVplayer from AOS4.1 old than last version and last libraries ????
- USB key lexar 1GO not work (FAT32 on). Recognized but not showed on the AOS 4.1 screen.
- Testing with another DVI2SVGA and no screen. Acube DVI adaptors have all pins minus 2 missing. Has some users have no problems, maybe we suffering with bad SAM batch ????
After one hour on the SAM, was happy to run my classic amiga again because better screen on the CRT
My first feeling ??????? Not the best one.............. Sorry if some bad words, It's just my feeling... Last edited by Mrodfr on 06-Feb-2009 at 07:35 PM.

I get bad quality too, vertical/grey lines and the text has a ghosted/doubled effect.
>>- No J7-J8-J4-J10 and J27 Received hardware not same as the Acube description on their site ??? Not read recently but strange missing connectors on the MB.
Correct. My question is: "Why pay the same for less?"
I get ripping effects when playing a DVD, I am not happy about this either. I thought that OS4.1+SAM could at least play a DVD decently.
>>- USB key lexar 1GO not work (FAT32 on). Recognized but not showed on the AOS 4.1 screen.
I am ok with this, I have inserted an 8GB USB drive and it showed and works fine.
>>- Testing with another DVI2SVGA and no screen. Acube DVI adaptors have all pins minus 2 missing. Has some users have no problems, maybe we suffering with bad SAM batch ????
I am not sure, I have tested with a TFT an dDVI directly and the picture is clear.
>>My first feeling ??????? Not the best one.............. Sorry if some bad words, It's just my feeling...
I think there is nothing wrong with saying what you feel and your first impressions. I would just have preferred ACube sticking with the old, more reliable design, this doesn't feel right to me. _________________ www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |

| VGA output seems fine on mine.. I am much more disappointed with audio output which has noticeable noise on the right channel. It also looks like the channels are reversed! I get sound from left speaker output if i for example slide the balance to the right. |

To be honest after about 5 years i got a new gen amiga. What's there seems to work ok for me. Like you i'm slightly miffed that there are missing bits although i'm not sure of the significance. Maybe we should just ask acube directly? My guess is we'll hear lots of people say they want to make some fpga expansion but that nothing will ever appear.
What is your case made of? As it's a fanless board a metal (preferably aluminium) case is going to be cooler running than anything made of plastic. Mine's currently in a micro atx case so there's plenty of airflow - On Pc hardware you can get access to the temperature of the chips from within windows. I wonder if it's possible on amiga - I guess it may need bios support.... You could try putting a case fan in temporarily and see if it helps cool the graphics chip?
Rich.

Oh and given that they've mentioned the impedance of monitor cables, what sort of VGA cable are you using - I've got a fairly hefty thick cable which i'm assuming implies higher quality. Could that be why i dont see the image ghosting?

I think you misunderstood RockDemon - he was merely quoting exactly what you said (but without proper quotes). So this was NOT a confirmation of your problem._________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |
