hi there.

HELP!

i just got a brand new radeon 9250 (HIS) card. it is only a 64bit one - but well...

problem:
my a1 does not boot with that card (i've been using a radeon 8500le without problems)
i switch on and after 2-3 seconds the a1 reboots again ... and so on...

i captured the serial output but it does not really tell anything special. i tested the card in the pc i'm typing from now and there the card works fine.
again, it is a "HIS Radeon 9250" and the package tells me it is agp 2x/4x8x compatible.

any idea? i have seen severyl people using a 9250 so it sould work fine - also rogue has one.

here is the serial output:

@MichaelMerkel

I have seen this recently with a number of very new PCI and AGP cards.
I don't know why but there seems to be a change in the new ones.
They just don't work in the XE machines havn't tested them in the micro.
PCI cards that is.

I suspect that the newer cards are either drawing all their power from the 3.3 volt bus and it cant take it. or they are connecting a bus the older cards didn't.

This is a recent phenom and I don't understand it.
I have noticed older PC's also suffer from this problem.
There was no change in the specs as far as I know.

Yet the very new cards behave badly in older machines and the XE

@MichaelMerkel

Erm, is the card in properly?
I had problems with installing my one, and in the end the card was not fixed in the slot correctly.

Just a thought

yes it is. that was the very first i checked - even before i tried it

well, if kgrach is right - then we have a problem in getting new cards, haven't we?
i have no problem in selling the card and getting another one (a 9000 for example) - but then i may get the same problem again.

First time I heard about this problem. I have a Connect3D Radeon 9250 here and no problems with it.

Can you try the card in a different machine (PC) ti see if it isn't the card that is broken?

Note also that there will always be cards that do not init properly, but as it looks from your log the card did already pass through the init sequence...?

The only thing I can say is that I've been using a HIS RADEON 9000 without problems for years (I didn't bother checking the 3D features, though).

Speaking of graphic cards, I'd like someone from the "inside" to give me sugestion:

I have a Radeon 7000, but would like to spruce my system up a bit. What gfx card should I buy? Nothing too expensive, if possible. I just wanted to make sure it's one of the cards supported in the future.
Recently saw a Radeon 9250, for about 50 euro, which is financially ok for me.

I've read many different opinions, some contradictory, so a definitive, "supported by Hyperion" tip would be welcome! ;)

that's actually one reason i bought the card. i read that the development chief is using a 9250

already did so (see my first message). the card works ok in our pc machine.

strange - isn't it...

maybe the card initialization is smth different now? would it help you to actually have this card in your machine? i'm willing to send it out to you for testing if you want - as i have no need for the card in its current state
in that case please contact me privately.

well, kgrach idea is that newer cards have these sort of problems.
my now 5(?) years old radeon8500le works great in 2d mode. but as 3d maybe never will work i decided to go for a "better" card. and the 9250 even has passive cooling which makes the a1 more silent - would make if it worked.

Oh, well, actually I only wanted to report that my HIS card works, since I saw you mentioned both HIS and RADEON 9000.

My card does not need a fan as well

@all

guess what - the aone now boots with that card! yipieh...

the problem was:
i had a scsi card put into the a1 (for testing smth in linux). *that* was the problem. now i removed it and - voilá - it now boots.

BUT:
no warp3d?!

i tried warpview. if i start it and try to load a picture i get a window telling me "ERROR: No Warp3D driver available!!!"

what is that?? upadte4 is installed (clean). what else do i need?

@MichaelMerkel
Well a number of things could have gone wrong

tjek the Warp3D setup, eg. is there a W3D_R200.library in libs:Warp3D/HWdrivers?.

do you use P96mode?, tjek if the new card have attached the settings in prefs/piccasso96Mode prefs program.

is there a Warp3d.library in libs: ?

tjek that there is no Warp3D thing (could have been set by other programs) in ENV-Archive: or in the Sys drawer in ENV-archive:

other than that, try some other programs.

@MichaelMerkel

Hmm. well thats wierd

how about the tooltypes for the radeon driver?

SOFTSPRITE=Yes
IGNOREMASK=Yes
INTERRUPT=Yes? (try with no, should be more compatible)

other than that, i really don´t know!.. i could compile a small program, that just checks the warp3d driver and print the info to a console?

Did you have that SCSI card in your machine with 8500?

Did it work with the 8500?

@LaBodilsen

ok... i found the problem after trying several things. not the gfx card fault - not my fault - but warp3ds fault (imho).

i'm using multiple assigns for several system folder. for libs: i use:

Assign Libs: Programme:Libs SYS:Libs

so Programme:Libs is the "first" path to search and especially if i copy new libs to libs: the go into my programme: parition instead of the system partition.

but warp3d does not like that! if i reverse the order back to "normal" everything is fine and the drivers can be found... strange!

now it works fine!

yes and yes.

that's why it took a little bit for me to think about it. i was about to remove everything for testing the radeon. well, the first card i tried was a winner (or loser).

@MichaelMerkel

I've just bought an ASUS Radeon 9250... Thanks to your thread I began to remove PCI-cards since it didn't boot, nor gave me a picture here either. However I don't have a SCSI-card but I had a network card, SB Live! and the sii 0680 controller. So I removed the network card, didn't work. Then I removed the SB Live! and then it booted!

And crashed when WB came up but I hadn't set the tooltype SOFTSPRITE=Yes. I've done that now but am still using the Radeon 7000 so I shall give it a try soon.

Let's hope that I can get it working with the SB Live! ...
