| @COBRA I have a AmigaOne and an Amiga4000 with CyberstormPPC, but I think a SCSI native driver for A1200 PPC user is a very good idea.

The lack of BPPC SCSI drivers have stopped me buying OS4 classic.
SCSI support would clock up at least one more OS4 classic sale....! _________________ AmigaOne X1000 |

Same here. I won't buy OS4 unless there is SCSI-support for my BPPC. |

| I have a scsi BPPC but have only ever used IDE. Does anyone know how a FastATAIII compares to a scsi on a BPPC?

| @COBRA Yes I would love to be able to use my SCSI drive under OS4.
As I said in my other post in the news thread there is already a PPC SCSI driver for the BlizzardPPC cards in the Linux/APUS project so someone with the right skill would most likely find it useful to help them create an OS4 driver.
see http://linux-apus.sourceforge.net/ for more info about Linux/APUS and the kernel source code. _________________ Sam440ep 667mhz, 512MB, 120GB 2.5" HD, OS4.1FE WinUae 3.0.0, OS 3.9, BB3, Catweasel MkIV Amiga 1200, Blizzard 040/40 (BlizzardPPC 060/200 with SCSI removed at present), mediatorSX pci, Voodoo3, PCI network card os 3.9BB2 4MB Minimig with ARM addon boar |

I'd certainly go with the SCSI option. CPU useage rockets when transferring data with the FastATA. With SCSI, it does not.
Still, I use the FastATA option as this PPC card has no SCSI :)

I have a FastATA MKIII working under OS4, sadly there's no PPC native driver, so the driver runs under emulation SLOWER than it does under OS3.9... and this is still way slower than SCSI... so, we need that SCSI driver on OS 4!

| Just curious....
Why do people refuse to buy OS4 classic for A1200 when there's no SCSI support ?
Is it because you find IDE drives/CD/DVD to expensive ? Those drives cost almost nothing anymore, probably a big (there are no small ones anymore) HD + DVDRW cost less then the purchase price of OS4 itself.
Is it because there is no (cheap) alternative to SCSI interfaces ? Arent there cheap IDE cards for PCI ? Or other solutions...
Is it because you want to use that over expensive ancient Blizzard SCSI card because it is so damn good ? Or want a return in investment for it ?
Anyway I think a SCSI driver IS a good idea, but I wouldnt hold back buying OS4 if there wasnt one. I'd toss those old SCSI drives in the bin and go for an IDE solution via the Mediator/SIL route...
Not ment as trolling, just my 2cts (Euro that is )

I'd say it's mostly because SCSI outperforms any current IDE solution on the classic Amiga (coming from someone who's stuck with IDE).

Realy ? Even older SCSI against the EIDE SIL cards ?? Or other....
I have never had faster drives that I have now on my SIL EIDE, bt I have an A1...
Is it the Mediator that is the bottleneck here ?

| Standard A1200 IDE is a real dog in terms of performance. During HDD activity, CPU usage leaps to about 90%.
SCSI is far far faster than the standard IDE and there is NO CPU overhead.
I believe that more modern IDE solutions such as FastATA improve IDE speed somewhat, but still not as fast as BPPC SCSI.
The idea of using SCSI PCI cards in a mediator has been raised elsewhere. This is a non starter as DMA access through the mediator is not supported in OS4 classic.
also of the 45 odd people that replied for a driver, how many have OS4 now? How many new customers would a SCSi driver generate?

also lots of classics amiga users have SCSI hardware allready. for example, all here are SCSI because SCSI-KIT and verry low CPU usage with SCSI.
Maybe PPC drivers for the fastATA and/or eide 4 way interface will resolve more or less the problem. _________________ BTW, what you have done for the amiga today ????

Yup I already said SCSI offers NO CPU overhead.
I personally have my A1200T BPPC Mediator system built around SCSI Hardware.
I do use an IDE for backup and storage, however it is slow and I am loathe to spend money on a new OS which will have slower HDD access than my current WB3.9 system... FastATA drivers in OS4 are emulated and run slower than in WB3.9 I dont have a FastATA device and I dont intend to buy anyone either... Last edited by ddni on 24-Feb-2008 at 06:05 PM. I voted yes, but I'm getting along OK with my IDE-Express. Can help you test one if needed. May you could release it as a commercial package with a native Epson scanner driver for say 20-25 Euros. _________________ A1200T 603e 330Mhz - Mediator TX OS4.1 F.E. It may not be expensive to buy a new HD and CD-ROM, but it does increase the cost of OS4 by at least 50%, plus it would make any existing SCSI equipment redundant. Add in the cost of a Powerflyer and it costs more than twice as much as just OS4.

PCI SCSI and SATA cards are not useable on Mediators at this time. Accelrator SCSI ports and Powerflyers are the only option.

Probably both of those, plus several other good reasons.

I would love to see you throw some good SCSI kit away, then find out the SiI card doesn't work on an OS4 Classic/Mediator. Please video it. |

| @metalheart:
it is simple: the prformance of IDE drives on classic is slow Very slow. About 0.8MByte/sec. It takes more than an our to copy my 3-4GB games partition to another. While SCSI on my bppc under os3.9 do 4.5MByte/sec.
Everybody will throw away his scsi drives if we can use a simple ide or sata pci card on our mediators. But now we can't, because there is no driver for it.

The problem comes if Hyperion backward engineered the SCSI driver in the blizzppc. Ralph would sue the hell out of hyperion and you would never see it.
Remember this is the same individual who would purposely go out of his way to disable WarpOS each and everytime he made a BizzPPC firmware update.
This guy is also the creator of MOS so don't look to appeal to his better nature and have him release the info.
