Radeon 9250 PCI advice for OS4.1

Hi guys,

I would like to install a PCI graphics card into my µA1 and move away from the on-board Radeon 7000 32MB. I have OS4.1 installed.

I've been thinking of buying a Radeon 9250 PCI, however should I go for the:

128MB ram, 64bit version
or the
256MB ram, 128bit version

?

Will there be any benefits towards buying the 128bit one?

Thanks,

x56h34

@x56h34

Right now OS4 only support 128mb but that might change, the price is not that different.

@x56h34

I went for a 256MB / 128-bit card (passively cooled, and with DVI output). Theoretically, at least, since it has higher memory bandwidth, it should perform better when using compositing.

It was literally 15UKP on ebay :)

@Karlos & NutsAboutAmiga :

Thanks for the advice.

Now, speaking of DVI, is it supported with UBoot and with OS4.1, or must I only use the standard 15-pin VGA out?

@x56h34

I've never tried it, to be honest. However, I'll give it a bash in a moment (involves moving monitors around).

PCI Graphic card is not supported in the MicroA1 - it won't work.

PS - Where in Ontario are you?

Awww, that's too bad. Well, I'm glad you told me this, as I was just about to buy one.

Well, this might be academic if the above post is correct, but yes it worked ('scuse the lousy cameraphone shots):

UBoot:

OS4.1 Update 1 Disk booted

I used the Update disk to test since the installed system is set up for the CRT (which worked simultaneously) and I didn't want to muck about with changing the monitor driver stuff.

@x56h34

Depending on the version of uboot you have you won't even be able to get into uboot settings. All I get is a locked computer and a black screen with uboot 1.1.1.

My understanding is that if you are lucky enough to have the right version of uboot you might be able to use the graphics card if you turn off USB and IDE DMA. I for one would be willing to do that if it meant more graphics memory, 32 megs is not enough for os4.1 update 1.

@Karlos

What uboot are you using? Do you have DMA on the hard disk enabled and also USB?

Yeah, the main reason I got the 9250 (or 9200M or whatever the hell it actually is LOL) is that the existing Radeon 7000 (32MB) card I had felt rather underpowered. It wasn't bad with the compositing turned off though.

@HammerD

Sorry, it isn't a micro A1. That's an A1 XE machine. I was purely answering from the point of view of the card. I don't know anything about micro A1 *shrug*.

It wasn't a waste anyway as I've been meaning to test the DVI since I got it :)

@Karlos

Oh ok, that makes sense then :)

I will repeat for the others: A PCI graphic card is NOT supported on the MicroA1 :)

@Karlos

Sure is. Especially since the on-board graphics card for the microA1 is very limited (32MB).

@HammerD

Is this a hardware limitation, or purely a question of "eventually" implementing support for a PCI GFX card (with MicroAmigaOne)?

Thanks.
