I was given a new sata harddrive recently, (500Gb Seagate) and finally got arround to putting it in the SAM, only to find I lack the required power connector!

There are plenty of 'large' white 4 pin connectors spare but the hardrive has three connectors, one is clearly the Sata data cable, one to the left of that is much wider and seems to correspond to the power connecters on the supplied DVD drive (but I only have one of those and it's in use on the DVD drive) the third to the right is 4 pin but much smaller and whilst there are some small 4 pin connectors free they don't fit.

So I guess I need an adapter, but which type? from what to what?

Hi !
I think you need an adapter cable Molex to Sata power suply, it happened to me the same thing because I had a single SATA power connector and I had to put one like this

http://www.satacables.com/html/molex-to-sata-power-15-pin-ada.html

Put some pictures of the connectors on your HD to better assist you.

Example: this image is for the
Barracuda ES SerialATA ST3500830NS

@Fernecho

That picture is exactly the same as my drive (except it's upside down )

So I'm assuming I need a connector similar to the one you linked to. Do I need to set that 1.5 Gb jumper? I seem to remember reading something about that.....

@broadblues

I read somewhere that the jumpers should be at 1.5 GB limit in AmigaOS 4.X

Try to not place the jumper at 1.5 GB, if fails, then put the jumper to 1.5 GB.

Read the PDF from Seagate on this page. See page 34

@Fernecho

Thanks for that info, I got a 3.5 to sata poer adapator, (slightly cheaper). So far it seems to work without the jumper in place.

BTW it's not a baracuda but one of these:

Pipeline® Hard Drives | Seagate

@broadblues

OK, jumpers have the same function in the Pipeline and Barracuda hard drives, enjoy it on your Sam for a long time.

Except that if I read the manual coerrectly the pipeline has the ability to autoset speed, to the interfaces limit, if the inetrface supports it, unsure whether the SAM interface can or not, but as I said, it seems to be working fine without a jumper at the moment. Which is good as the manual doesn't specify jumper positions if needed, they are probably the same as the baracuda, but yuou never know.....
