| Got my Sam 460 today, built it together but since I didn't get hold of a Sata card I have a hard time booting the CD. :( Eventually I got it to boot somewhat from a TFTP-server but it just halts after the last line in the kicklayout file. Will order a Sata card and in the mean time experimenting with installing OS4 over the net. Any help would be nice.
Have you got yours? |

| So you pay $1000 and can't even load the OS without buying a SATA card
That's not a great advert for any prospective OS4.x users
It should be as simple as putting the DVD in the drive and switching it on shouldn't it?

nah half the fun is troubleshooting and setting up our miggys ....you know most of us arent Mac users
@ Skuggan
sorry can't comment on your problem as I don't have a 460 but hopefully some 460 users will be along soon Last edited by klx300r on 15-Feb-2011 at 01:38 AM.

UBoot expects a HD to be connected to the sinlge onboard SATA-2 port. While this may sound stupid, if you did connect your CDROM/DVD drive to that port, you'd still need an additional SATA/IDE controller in order to connect the hard-drive to.
Options for installing the OS: - a SATA card with CDROM/DVD drive - an IDE card with CDROM/DVD drive - a 2 GB SD card with OS4 preinstalled (if you're buying from Amigakit)
I like the idea of the SD card. I should try it some time.
I've heard that it is possible to boot from a USB connected CDROM/DVD drive (NOTE: I haven't tested this myself). However, the driver for the onboard SATA-2 port is still considered experimental, so it is still recommended that you get a SATA card.

I'm pretty sure that I managed to get to the "insert disk" AmigaOS screen when I tried loading the kickstart via TFTP. I can't remember exactly what command I used. Also, you should modify the kicklayout file to enable the driver for the onboard SATA-2 if you want to install to the HD without a SATA card.
As I wrote above, the driver for the onboard SATA-2 port is still considered experimental, so it is worth getting a SATA card, at least for the time being.

| I dont want to be overly negative, but this is exactly what i feared when it was first announced that it had only one sata port. At the very least they should have included a sata card in the price or at least a working USB dvd drive, so that you can actually use the machine.
This is just horrible design... |

| I like the OS-on-SD card approach that AmigaKit has come up with for this board for a very small extra cost. I think that should be the default option for the Sam460 given the limitations of the onboard SATA.

And what if someone doesn't want a USB DVD drive? Or a SATA card? They would be complaining about the additional cost.
When I got my Sam460, I didn't even have a SATA cable or drive. Did I moan and groan about them not including one? No. What's next, complaining about having to buy your own RAM? Moaning and groaning that they didn't include an IDE controller because you don't have a SATA DVD drive?
When you buy any motherboard it is up to you to make sure that you have all the extras that you require. If that's too much, then buy a complete machine instead.

It should be if you buy a complete system.
If you buy just the motherboard, then, no. You'll have to set it up yourself properly. I am talking generically here for any computer/system.

UBOOT won't recognize any slimline CD-ROM drives that I have tried (the interface is different). So I was playing around and I copied the Workbench files from the original CD to a USB memory stick. It would then boot from the memory stick. At least I think it did. If you have a 1/2 or 1-GB memory stick you could give it a try. You'd have to use a second computer to copy the files. A PC will do it because the CD format is the same. If I were you, at first I would just copy the basic files required to boot. That way you won't waste time copying the whole CD if it doesn't work. _________________ X5000 / microA1(OS4.1 FE U2) / CodeBench / Imagine / Blender Lightwave 2019 / Microsoft Visual C++ |

| Ofcourse I connected the HDD to the Sata port and tried all kinds of different ways to get it to boot as most of you described, I'm rather experient with hardware and software.
In 2 weeks my SATA card will arrive. In the meantime I will play around with getting it to boot in other ways.
I choosed to be an early adopter. :)
I get back to you guys with progress regarding booting from usb, network etc.
Still, I'm very happy with the 460 so far, worth every penny. It's fun to play around with.

Indeed. Skuggan here has the right spirit, he wants to be an early adopter and he's willing to tinker with the HW/SW installation (there is alot of people also, that consider this part of the fun).
I am a "complete system" type of guy, and when I got my Sam in 2009, I made sure it was ready to go. It arrived, I pressed the power button, and after a short while I was playing with OS4, installing apps and games and so on.
There is nothing to complain, anybody should choose the option that suits them best, that's all.

About TFTP, I tried that, too. When I had 440. You can't boot more than a kernel with it. No tiny boot image. I doubt it changed. _________________ OpenWindows Initiative. Port PS3 hardware to bananas. For free. Join today and receive expired $50 cupon from AI! |

Actually the best bit comes a couple of months later when somebody else has the same problem and you get to be the nice chap who has all of the answers to all of the problems.

Eh?? I dont want a crappy optical drive, i even removed it from my MacBook Pro and replaced with a second hard drive. I don't want to pay a SATA card too, 1 sata port is perfect for me, why i should spend more?
I have a 30GB SSD for my Sam and a SD to boot and installa OS4, it is the perfect solution imho, at least for me. The only reason i didn't have upgraded to Sam460 already is because i have very little time since i work all days so i will wait some weeks, maybe a new sata driver will pop up.

I did not know that using the Uboot can be so interesting. Without a system running on this hardware ;) _________________ Mac Mini G4 1.5 Ghz & MorphOS 3.x Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 Ghz MorphOS 3.x BlaBla Team Member -> http://blabla.ppa.pl AmiParty Team Member -> http://chal.pl |
