I just tried 2 different USB2.0 cards today. Both have the VIA VT6212 chipset. I tried numerous times to get the micro (with a fresh install of AOS4.1 update 3) to boot but it kept getting stuck right after the kickstart files were loaded. The AOS4.1 boot splash screen appeared, then kept reappearing as it went into a continuous warm re-boot cycle. It never did load WorkBench.
Some other users have reported problems with the VIA chipset on the Hyperion forums with the new EHCI driver, so I commented it out in the kicklayout file. I then re-booted and voila, the micro then booted successfully; albiet with USB1.1 only (unfortunately). I tried both cards successfully.
Although I was happy to find that a USB card will work in the PCI slot, I am disappointed that the cards that I have will not operate in USB 2 mode. Possibly other users will find another type of card that will work or the issue with the EHCI driver will be resolved.

It looks like this extends across the A1 range. I thought I was alone on the USB card issue with my A1XE but it looks like I am not. Having also a VIA USB chipset.
But it looks like my card can actually work but the EHCI driver might not like the PCI slot it's in. Or that the USB is going faster than EHCI can handle!
It's early days for the EHCI driver so I guess some issues had to come up. Not all hardware configurations can be tested. Unless a developer has that same configuration. |

Same here.. I have a USB2 card with VIA chip and it just keeps cycling on the splash screen. I am told that NEC chips are the best choice, though I don't have one yet.

Useful for owners of Micro ONLY:
read Cyborg and Geri in particular

So far, I can't seem to find one locally that doesn't have the VIA chipset. I'll keep looking and try the NEC. Thanks. |

If you are somehow using the experimental uboot for the Micro where you disable IDE DMA and usb onboard, please do NOT comment here. I can prove with posts that there are a number of versions of uboot in the wild and you'll only confuse this issue by reporting here.
March 2005 uboot is STILL the last official release from Hyperion. You can find this date in the uboot text. This thread is for solutions based on the official uboot release only.

Just waiting for my registration to their forum be authorized. Thanks for the background info. Over the years I have fiddled with my micro to add a gfx card, more memory and now a USB card. I guess I am not surprised that there are problems with usb high speed mode. |

I saw your post on the OS4 support site. I'll post my results there as soon as I get registered. If the EHCI driver doesn't like the slot then you'll have the flexibility to put it into another slot. Let us know if you find one that works. Unfortunately with the micro, it only has one.

This is actually one reason why I like Kicko's idea of using low stress (for usb) mouse only first and building his way back up to more usb stress from there to see what the breaking point might be. In his case we're talking XE, but I'm still curious as to the results.
btw-another post, this time from amigans and I'm seriously trying to quote people who know what they are talking about :
Quote:
I dont think any PCI card works well in a micro A1 ... Unless you disable onboard IDE DMA and USB |
^But this is the exact change in conjunction WITH the experimental uboot that should NOT be posted here, since most people have no access to that version, and certainly no users do. Regardless, it does allow for use of a graphics card in the Micro, at the expense of IDE DMA and USB.

I hate to keep posting this over and over, but here we are again: |
Look I read this recently and it says nothing of USB! Nor of the micro for that matter specificially.

Creative Sound cards = bad |
That may be so and I've got one. But it stil doesn't explain how this affects an external USB2 card. I had no problems with my USB2 card until the EHCI driver came out. So how does this become a hardware problem? For me the problem is obviously a software driver.
I can't speak for the Micro about this. But the Micro is one of the most solid and bug free A1 models we have.Last edited by Hypex on 04-Sep-2011 at 02:28 PM.

I believe there is problem whit using graphic cards in PCI slot on Micro AmigaOne.
I think all the Eyetech / MiaLogic computers have some issues.
Not the same problems on all computers, its clear that they did not test the computers like they should have to prevent any design / manufacturing problems. _________________ http://lifeofliveforit.blogspot.no/ Facebook::LiveForIt Software for AmigaOS |

I just tried enabling EHCI with IDE DMA and onboard USB ports disabled in uboot. No dice. Same problem as before. Thanks for the tip. |
