| Hi,
I wrote a page on my website to explain how to install CruxPPC and Ubuntu on the Sam440 board produced by ACube Systems.
The part about Ubuntu is not polished yet but at least it is now available for everyone.

The TYPSoftFTP server doesn't work and the Amiga TFTPServer just keeps trying to resend the first block.

I use TYPsoft on my PC and it works fine.
On Sam, you must set a few variables:
setenv serverip "IP address of the TFTP server computer" setenv ipaddr "IP address of Sam" save
An IP address which works on your local network of course... _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

This should probably be included in your instructions also. I had set the address of the TFTP server computer, but left the Sam default address even though it was in my DHCP range as I thought that wouldn't be a problem. But I guess it was because as soon as I set the Sam's address to one in my static range TFTP started working with TFTPServer on my A1.

Ok, I'll add it. Uboot probably does not worg with a DHCP. Hence the required static IP. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

The next problem I had was copying uImage over to the boot partition. It isn't clear how you would use the network to do it, and I couldn't get the CD-ROM drive to open in order to switch disks to one that had the kernel burned to it. I ended up having to copy the uImage I found on the boot CD which seems to work just fine.

The new kernel works better. I suggest you to use this one.
To mount the CD: mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt
then you can do "dd" directly from there with: dd if=/mnt/uImage /of=/dev/sda1
To unmount the CD: unmount /mnt Last edited by elwood on 18-Jun-2008 at 09:06 AM.

Ok, I think I've copied the new kernel over from within Ubuntu. How can I make sure that it is the new one?
And I can't get either fluxbox or X-window to work correctly in Crux, but I'm not really worried about those right now.

If you "dd" the latest kernel (uImage file), you use this one. You can't have 2 kernels on the same partition.
For the rest, we need some Linux experts with a Sam board. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

As I said I'm not really concerned about getting X-windows working on Crux right now. In fact I'm not really interested in Crux if I can get Ubuntu working like I want. For instance to get X-windows working in Ubuntu I had to change "FBDEV" to 'false', but I'm wondering if that's the best way to do it?

Ok. And I don't remember what I answered during the setup of Xwindow. I chose the default answer when the setup asked if I wanted to enable/disable the framebuffer. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Have you tried upgrading Ubuntu edgy to feisty?

No, I had to overwrite my disk. But I know Max of ACube who did it successfully. If you manage to do it, keep us informed (well I hope we are not only 2 people reading this ) _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Well, I was mostly successful upgrading to feisty (except that libdevmapper1.2 wouldn't install because it couldn't create a dir on a r/o filesystem). But when I then tried to upgrade to gutsy it all blew up and now I have to start all over again.

| Hm, nice Install guide. One question: Isn't it posible to skip CruxPPC installation and directly install Ubuntu? I mean Crux is to complicated anyway ;) |

your filesystem shouldn't be read only. And you can mount it in read/write if needed, with something like: mount -u -w /dev/sdax
@Psycreator
No because the Ubuntu file is not a CD so you can't boot it directly. I suggest you wait for the LiveCD ACube is working on. It will be much easier to install. Last edited by elwood on 22-Jun-2008 at 07:58 AM.

Hm, I think this Ubuntu is more easy to install like Crux. But some things are strange and not clear at all what to do like the Xorg reconfigure thing and changing passwords for user and so on, I managed to solve that problems. No It booted without problems, I can login and see the desktop. Now the problem is that I get a debug screen, Gnome ####ed up. The same problems like under Crux. I Think Gnome is not a good Idea for a Desktop when used under PPC, unstable like hell. Firefox quits without a course, when using Open Office the hole system crashes and so on....
Hope that Live CD is a little bit better, and a new Uboot would be nice course now my USB does not work perfect after a reboot, I have to switch of the Computer or Mice and Keyboard does not work anymore after a normal reset ;))
And yes... bring OS4 to all.. Linux is not so good, I do not think it has good music apps which run under PPC with MIDI support.

Playing around a little more with Crux I was able to get X-windows by running 'X -configure' and generating a new xorg.conf.new. I'd already been able to finally compile fluxbox so I got that running also. FireFox looks nice running on the Sam.

I had a go at trying to install Amiwm in place of Fluxbox, but was stymied by a compile error. If anyone successfully compiles it, would you please let me know.
