Hi all,
I am trying to install Etch according to Hypex thread and installer (thx man ) since I was stuck for some time with Sarge...

my config is A1G4+512Mo RAM+Radeon 9000PRO
* a1ide 1x HD unit 0, it is where my Sarge install is and where I attempting to install Etch
* sii0680ide 1x HD unit 0, it is the boot HD with highest priority bearing AmigaOS4.1 and several others pre AmigaOS4.0 version
1x cdrom unit 2

the Etch installer is doing its job and I am using the latest Etch 4.0r9 CD1.
everything goes fine until it starts to install the base system, which always get stuck at 6% (libstdc++6) and even got a debootstrap error about libss10.9.8 ! stuck means everything frozen and need a hard reset

I thought it was still this VIA bug even if my board is supposed to be fixed (DMA+USB) so reverting the cdrom to PIO mode but it did not help...

so anyone successfull at installing Etch from scratch on AmigaOne ?

@lionstorm

before you proceed in installation, choose to do a validation of the cd. just in case...
from my experience with linux on my pegasos, i can tell you that a lot of installation troubles
have to do with invalid cd's and dvd's.

@lionstorm

Lots of problems here too to install Debian on my Amiga One between yesterday and today.

It freezes every time I want to initialize a Linux partition with EXT3 filesystem and it makes me reset the machine continuosly.

What a shame...

I did it in the first place. But since then file have been moved around. And I've had trouble myself reinstalling Linux.

My installer really needs an update. Infact we should be using Lenny but without an installer for that...

If you still have problems and verify the CD is fine I tell you what. Since you have the latest Etch, I'll rebuild an install CD for you. Simply locate the initrd.gz file which should be in the install/powperpc directory and email it to me. Or PM me a direct link.

I'd download it myself but a.) I can't find it on the debian.org site anymore and b.) I gone over my limit so downloads are real slow for my off peak.

Something is not right there. If you get a freeze doing that you could have a HD with errors or a bad HD setup. Or Linux just being buggy. :- Is it fine with OS4?

Failing that it could be a mis-match of my installer to a newer installer CD. Which is possible, My installer needs an update!

@ all : thx for lending me a hand on this...

ok as it stands, I was able to install the base system BUT on the sii0680ide side, and all attempt to install Etch on the a1ide has failed (something to do with boot priority ??)

just the base system was installed (no X and no desktop environmen) because I was short in time...

now after figuring out how the boot partition works and have an entry in the SLB, I will proceed by booting the kernel from HD and installing the associated modules and the rest of the system (as Hypex said, this might be the problem since stable release is not etch but lenny and during the base system installation, the installer could not find a valid debian mirror ).

For installation I used the CD1 from 4.0r8

In case this fails and you need to download again I just found a neat trick. See if the ISO is available on a torrent. If it is and there are enough seeds then drop the corrupt ISO in place of the new one and make sure it detects it so that it checks it for valid data. It will then only download the corrupted parts and the good parts are left.

@lionstorm

I can only suggest you to upgrade to Lenny after you installed the base system. Etch has proven to be completely unstable on my A1. Lenny on the other side works just fine with kernel v2.6.18.

You can still install the rest of the system after the upgrade with "tasksel --new-install".

@Geri: is there any possibility for a network (internet) update?

Sure, just include some online package repository in /etc/sources.lists (example can be found in the Linux forum here). Then do a "aptitude update" and a "aptitude full-upgrade" afterwards.

@Geri

ok will try that but for the moment, I am trying to get linux entries in the SLB

It used to work fine (thats how I betatest some of your kernels) but I got rid of the boot partition because of reformaating and now I can not get the trick back !

- the boot partition is below the 4Go limit on the sii0680 controller and the boot switch is activated
- it is identified as EXT\03 with 512 blocks and 100 buffers
- I can mount it under AOS4.1 with ext2filesystem and td64patch (don know why I need this one since it is below 4Go but I can not see it if I dont apply the patch )
- It contains a boot directory with a1boot.conf and kernel.img
- bootarg in a1boot.conf is
debian_Etch /boot/kernelhd-2.6.18.img root=/dev/hde10 video=radeonfb

and with all these, it should work but the SLB only presents me AOS partition

Does the 4 GB limit still matter?

I guess the amount of buffers don't really matter for Linux or the SLB. Not sure about ext2fs.

Quote:

Probably because ext2fs only speaks TD64 and OS4 devices only NSD!?

That looks good so far. IIRC the Linux boot partition needs to be located after any bootable OS4 partition. A partition with an a1boot.conf before a bootable OS4 partition is ignored, because the SLB just scans the remaining partitions but not all the partitions again. Maybe thats the problem here, if the SLB scans the harddisk attached to the VIA controller before the harddisk on the SiI controller.

Can the SLB find it in the OS4 boot partition? Would help me a lot!

I never tried that out, but I doubt it will work.

Try using LNX\00 as the DOS type. MTD should already have the proper ones defined. And make sure it is set to bootable.

You shouldn't need the patch anymore. I have some DOS drivers set up. I saved a mount list for the partition with an icon. Filesystem set to L:EXT2Filesytem. Might have to set DOS type as well. I can mount them from the icon. without that patch. They are Ext3 format and provided are unmounted cleanly on Linux I can even write to them using OS4.1.

Damn thats is the exact case where the boot partition is nearly at the end of the HD so all linux partitions are before...

will reorgnize my HD and let you know the progress

thx for this information, I was not aware of this and never read it anywhere else

hum, i'm trying to change my old hd with a new one but i've the same lionstorm problem..slb find only os4
i copied the os4 partition and linux partition with partimage, so the structure of the hd is the same, like the file systems (only the size change)
my fist partition is a linux one, but with the old hd it works, are you sure that the a1boot.conf must be in a linux partition after the os4 boot?

@lionstorm
how is ended with your problem?

That's what I thought. Maybe the boot priorities of the partitions have something to say, too? Are they still the same?

no go here, I tried everything suggested but this damned linux entry does not appear anymore

I suspect a change in the SLB which came with AmigaOS4.1
I use v2 29036 octets version 1.19

@ Geri : I dont think boot priority has anything to do with appearance in SLB.
in my case the partition (hde2) which has the kickstarts of my different AmigaOS4.x is a 3 vs 0 for linux boot partition (hde3), both partition being below the 4Gb barrier.
will check when reversing boot priority
