| Hi,
I know someone that can do an Ubuntu LiveCD for Sam460 but as a payed job.
So I wonder how much of you were interested to pay for that. 10 EUR/14 USD would be the minimum to pay.
Thanks. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Not really a Ubuntu fan. It is getting more and more bloated and forever forking away from the regular Linux distros. I am still running 10.x at work since I am not interested in unity and about to look into moving over to Linux Mint Debian edition.
If Debian runs slow on my Sam then I would hate to see how bad the current version of Ubuntu will run :P |

Doing a LiveCD is not that easy so choosing Ubuntu which is mainstream should make it easier. I know Mint but it's probably more difficult to build a LiveCD from it :-/ _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Without doing a complete solo CD it's probably easier than you think. Using the system made on the A1 and that I continued you can make up a bootable CD that boots the Ubuntu installer image while requring the standard live CD to be in another CD drive.
Once Ubuntu boots it passes control over to the main CD and boots into a live desktop. It pretty much just looks for the Ubuntu CD after booting as it thinks it had booted off it so when it finds it things continue as normal.
I tested this system on my A1 and was able to boot into a live 9.04 desktop! However because of orher reasons possibly related to kernel modules I was unable to run the installer as I couldn't tell it what partition I wanted and it just kept quiting. |

I've been looking into that as well. There is the first version and then version 1.4 and later 2.0 IIRC. Only saw the first on my A1. I'd also like to port this over.
There is also another once called MOLK, or Mac On Linux Kernel. But AFACT it's text mode based and maybe harder to set up. Still I'd like to port it over as well and check it out. Last edited by Hypex on 13-Aug-2011 at 04:34 AM.

I doubt anyone would want to put his time in a SamXMac ... PegXmac was created in a time when powermacs were still very pricy, now you can pick them up for almost nothing. And there is Ubuntu 11.10 for them available (not sure how stable it is, never tried it) and you can try MorphOS while at it.
On the other hand I can understand that you want your (for me) expensive Sam460 to good use.

Even though, I donnot own a SAM460, but I would install Ubuntu if I had a SAM460 and UbuntuPPC. However I would invest 10 anyway, hoping that a live Ubuntu CD for SAM440 would be easier to do and might become reallity as well.
One suggestion: Use KDE instead of GNOME, KDE feels lot faster (at least on SAM440). And yes, Elwood I know you prefer Fluxbox... but I found out that KDE (even though it is not lean) gives good results on SAM.

| LiveCD suggests to me that I just stick the disc in and Ubuntu boots up on screen and nothing more. Will this LiveCD come with an installer that can quite happily and safely create a partition on a HD (that AmigaOS already sits somewhere on) and install Ubuntu to it? _________________

We need to use only one CD. We are not Linux experts
About the non-possible installation, it may be due that the partition manager used by Ubuntu is not RDB-aware like amiga-fdisk is. It may be a big problem to use amiga-fdisk instead during the installation process.
@gerograph
if we have a 460 CD, I hope we'll be able to modify it easily to do a CD for 440.
I use Lxde but anyway KDE can be used for the LiveCD and other window managers can be installed later on.

I would gladly pay a bit for an easy to install and use linux distribution. I know that an alternative environment can be installed on top of ubuntu, but I would strongly advise to start with xubuntu. I personally hate the unity desktop (Gnome 3) and the KDE 4.x is way too heavy for our Sam460. Xfce is enough lightweight but not that basic as LXDE, also Linux Torvald switched from Gnome to Xfce!

No I wouldn't use Xfce... I tried Xfce on SAM440, and it is way slower, than KDE 3.x (I think thats what I have). As I am not a Linuxexpert, I guess it is KDE Displaymanager (?) which is sort of better. Under KDE Menus + Buttons feel a lot more "snapier" and "useable". It might only be a tiny bit which is responsible for that, and having that bit inside Xfce would be great as Xfce is overall of course more lightwighted.
@elwood
buttonline, is for me: A SAM440 (460) Linux Live CD is probably much needed, wether it is Ubuntu or whatever doesn't really matter, as long as it
- windowdragging, menues and the rest of the GUI response fast enough - can open basic apps like OpenOffice, Webbrowser,... - If it feels a bit like Amiga OS would also be really appriciated (OS4 Icons, Menus, Taskbar, OS4 Skin). - work out of the box - easy to configure
As I am not a Linuxexpert, these goals might even be reached by a basic Debian or whathever distro using LXDE etc...
Whatever way you go elwood, I'll donate 10 and some more if it comes out for 440. Only thing is: It should be work out of the box + easy to configure !

KDE 3.x is pretty old now and I am not sure how well it is now supported if at all. On my home machine, I am currently running KDE 4.5.5 as an example.
A minimal style desktop would be good, such as Xfce or some of the others but if the Gnome and KDE libraries are available, it means you can also run applications written for them as well.
@elwood To be honest, my Sam is pretty low end so performance will be an issue regardless of Linux distro (currently have it dual booting Amiga OS4 and Debian).
Even on decent spec'ed computers, I have found the main stream version of Ubuntu to be a pig with system resources. My exposure to the verious Ubuntu distros flavours eg. KDE, Xfce etc is limited but I found Ubuntu performance wise one of the least nicest distro's to use.
While Ubuntu has a lot of nice eye candy which people like to write home about, I would like my machine to be usable as well ;)
With that rant behind me, if a reasonable performance version could be made for the Sam, I would not be upset about it. As suggested by other people, a bounty might be a better way to get an indication of how serious people really would be for the port to happen. |

I used Linux Mint Xfce 201104 (which is based on Linux Mint Debian) for a while, and it was OK, but there is a certain amount of weirdness that comes from using the Debian Testing repository. Every once in a while an update will break something.
I don't like Unity either, so I've been using Ubuntu 11.04 with the Gnome "classic" interface. From what I've read this is going away in 11.10or it may be reimplemented in Qt but the good news is that Unbuntu Studio 11.10 is switching to Xfce and AWN, so I think that may be my next upgrade.

There's a method to the madness: Filesystem Hierarchy Standard
It will get better over time, but it will be small incremental changes over many years. I don't like Window's hierarchy any better, so it doesn't bother me that much.

I personally don't care for LXDE that much, but I think it would be a better choice than Xfce for a Sam460. Xfce isn't as light as it used to be it's sort of growing into the space that Gnome 3 is abandoning.

I'm, of course, ready to pay a bit for new SAM440/460 Linux.
