| Hi everyone,
# We have updated the poll with an extra question please check this out #
My friend and I are looking at starting our own business.
Now we know its possibly not the best climate currently to try and do this, but as there is nothing really anywhere near us that offers what we are looking at doing, then we thought best to strike and get it up and running before anyone else and corner the market.
Now this may seem silly but we are REALLY struggling to think of a good name for our company (most other things were easy to sort).
Now we have a few names we come up with and have set up a poll to see if people can help us pick the best:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3ZKL663
To give you a low down on what we are offering to help you understand what sort of name we are trying to go with, we are looking at setting up a "social gaming" center where people can come and play all sorts of games:
Computer/console gaming (XBox, PS) (games & consoles provided by us)
Board games (provided by us):
General board games (Ticket to ride, Twilight Imperium, Small world and various others),
Co-op board games (Castle Panic, Pandemic)
Fantasy themed RPG games (e.g. Descent Journeys in the Dark, Warhammer Quest, latest Dungeons & Dragon Board games)
Collectible/living card games (facilities to play provided only, although may have stater packs for people to use) (Magic the Gathering, Warhammer Invasion, Summoner wars)
We are looking into setting everything up so you can just turn up and play what you want for however long we are open offering the facilities required for each type of game.
We are also looking at setting up tournaments, leaderboards, on-going campaigns with dungeon masters etc, membership packs and all sorts of stuff.
We will also have a website with info on the company, opening times, costs and information on each of the board and card games.
If successful we plan to expand the range (& number of copies) of board games, and the latest consoles (maybe even add in a retro section where people can play older console/computer games) to keep people interested and coming back for more
Please let us know what you feel is the best name for us to go with

It's a lot cheaper to buy an existing company that is now dissolved than to start a company from scratch. Therefore I suggest THQ. ;)
Failing that, there are plenty of company names up for sale on places like [http://www.companies-uk.co.uk/ which you can browse for more ideas.*
I would avoid the last choice you made, "Game Over" as that isn't going to inspire confidence for long term investment.
These are my favourite names from one section (Though not necessarily for your company!)
DIAL-A-WIFE LIMITED DIGITALFERRET LIMITED DIRTY ANIMALS LIMITED DIRTY BOY LIMITED DIVERSITY ARTS LIMITED DOLLY DIMPLES LIMITED DOLPHIN PUBLIC HEALTH LIMITED DRAGONCAVE LIMITED (This would be great for D&D gamers!) DRAMATICUS LIMITED
I was looking at the "d's" because I was looking for something with "design" in the name. Plenty of them in there, but nothing as great as "Dirty Boy". Heh, I might buy that myself.
Whatever you choose, remember you are going to have to be speaking to very posh men in suits at some point with your company name being mentioned in serious conversations. Hearing your bank manager say the name "dirty boy" over and over might either be hilarious or cringeworthy depending on how serious you want to be.
* Yay, one of my old companies in on there! _________________ "Anyone with a modicum of reasonableness may realize that it is like comparing the ride in the world to descend the stairs to catch the milk in the house."

Picked Digital Dice since you could do some nice logos for that. I had considered the Asylum but it sounds better suited to a nightclub.
Good luck with the venture. |

I went for the Asylum because it sounds less geeky and a good place to go. Also reminds me of the oldskool gathering days. _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

First of all, I couldnt figure out from your description wether this business is going to be in internet, or wether it is going to be a physical place to visit?
For it sounded a lot like physical shop (board games provided by you), but at same time it seemed a lot like some website. So which is it?
If it is physical, there is actually example of that existing in Finland. A chain called "Fantasiapelit" (= phantasy games). It sells RPG, Boardgame, trading card and figure (ie. warhammer) games, and in adddition also Manga comis nowadays.
They also have weekly gaming nights and they hold tournaments especially for figure games (mainly for warhammer serie of games).
So you could maybe even take a visit to Finland to visit one of their shops to find out what they are doing to use them on your version.
Another thing. After you tell me wether its website or physical shop, I will think better of the name of your company.
So far mainly the games hub is only one that gives some idea about what your company is.
When choosing a company name you have to keep in mind that easier it is to recognise what your company is doing, the easier it is to market it.
For example, which one do you think is more likely to come up on google search when looking for "game company": "blizzard vision" or "The games company".
So when choosing a name, you should already think about marketing. If people see your companys name, do they figure out what your company is about?
Most of your names on the list dont give much idea about your company, so while they sound good, they are bad from marketing point of view. |

Hi Bugala,
Firstly thanks for replying in this thread, it’s not quite as active as I would like but at least some people are replying.
Sorry if my initial email was not clear enough, hopefully I can clear up any misunderstandings with this one
It will be a physical company (although we will have a website to promote ourselves, coming soon....hopefully).
Our basic aim is for people to come a pay a small hourly fee and within that time they are free to play what they want.
This will range from: Console games,
Board games (such as Small World, Pandemic, Castle Panic, Pirates Cove), Role playing/dungeon crawling board games (such as Twilight Imperium, Descent Journeys in the Dark, Warhammer Quest and Dungeons and Dragons board games)
Collectable card games (such as Magic the Gathering)
Or ‘Living card’ games (such as Warhammer Invasion and Summoner Wars).
Some things we will provide ourselves, such as the consoles, console games and all the board games. We are only looking at providing the facilities to play the card games so that customers can bring their own pre-built decks and battle it out (although we may have starter sets for each type of game to hand if people just want to dabble at playing them).
We aim to hold tournaments with the console and card games, and with the more epic scale board and RPG games we will provide what we have termed 'Character/Race packs' which are given to each player (if they want).
These packs will allow us (and our customers) to keep details of any unfinished games, so that they can come back later and pick up where they left off without having to worry about keeping track of everything themselves.
We also have plans/ideas to run extended role playing campaigns with Warhammer Quest where I will Dungeon Master with up to 4 players (and possibly D&D – although neither myself nor my friend are overly familiar with D&D).
We have many more ideas that I don’t want to go into or this rather long post will be about twice as long.
What we won’t be offering is a shop itself (i.e. we won’t actually sell any games). Although this may be something we could do in future, we would probably struggle to beat prices off Ebay/Amazon etc.
Hopefully this makes things clearer ?

Yes. that makes me understand your current plan for most part.
However, there is still one question regarding the name.
How far area are you planning to reach?
For example, are you situated in capital city and your main goal is to get people in capital city to come to play at your place. Or are you perhaps aiming that the appeal of a place is like amusement park to where people come from all over the country?
Bit of commenting about your current plan.
It sounds fun and something I would use if it would be local service here.
However, What I have noticed from that "Fantasiapelit" shops is that they service the playing as free of charge, but they make money out of when people play those games and then they want to buy them for themselves. And at least for last about 30 years it have been a working plan.
But they dont ahve consoles there. They just have Board games, RPGs (they used to start wth RPG, now its a dieing breed), Card Games and Figure games. And basically they have only some board games that are actually playable.
However, they get round that a bit by having weekly gaming nights where everyone is welcome to come and bring their own games with them.
And especially in warhammer and Trading Card games, one of the strong points is that every player has their own army or deck of cards to play with. So loaning from shop wouldnt be so much fun anyway.
One name idea that comes to my mind would be something like "Come play games in here - park"
If you pass by a shop named that with your car, the idea is somewhat clear what is inside that store. And if you are interested in playing anything, you might take a notice where that shop is and want to later come and take a look and see what are they inviting to play in there. |
