Project-Xi (iPhone) (inspired by the Team 17 classic!)

Hi all,

I am starting work on a new iPhone game inspired by the classic Amiga game Project-X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project-X)... currently simply entitled "Project-Xi" or "Project-i" (inventive I know ).

I will be basing the design around the original Amiga game (not the more recent Playstation sequel, X2).

This will not be a port of the original game (I doubt Team 17 would approve), It will instead take inspiration from one of my favourite Amiga shmups (one of my favourite shmups of all time come to think of it). Imagine the original Project-X, but with much enhanced graphics and features (have some great ideas for re-workinng the in between level special stages; whereby you had to navigate narrow tunnels at an ever increasing speed)...

Anyway, I am much in the initial planning stages at the moment, so any input from you guys (and anyone else you know who might be interested) would be great!

I will keep this thread updated regularly!

BTW, if I have posted this thread in the wrong forum, please can one of you admin-y types move it to the most appropriate place (I did spend a while searching through the forums and thought this was most appropriate... but I am usually wrong!).

EDIT - Game update #01 (10/01/2010)

Hi all,

Well, I have been locked in the study all day long today, attempting to get some solid concept artwork and initial sprite work down... here are the results!

Still very early days... but determined to do the original justice!

Cheers,
T

@Tankshell

Hello and welcome to aw.net.

Have to be a bit of a spoilsport here, but our

Terms of Service says

"" Images in threads: Images embedded in threads should be no wider than 640 pixels, larger images should be hyperlinked. "".

so please hyperlink or make a smaller image.

This is because wide images have a tendency to destroy the forum layout.

@colin419

I was also thinking that an AmigaOS version would be great.

Have been working hard on the game, basic intro, title screens and have a controllable player ship sprite flying around... Have spent this weekend working on revamping my personal website to go along with the game... You can check it out (in mockup form) at: http://timloram.me.uk

Cheers all,
T

P.S If the iPhone version does well I shall absolutely consider doing an Amiga OS version!

@Tankshell

I don't own an iPhone and never plan to. However I'm currently playing this game on the A1200 so I might be able to add some input:

- don't make it too difficult - one of the problems with the original (and SE) is that it is too tricky - not so much the actual gameplay, which is difficult, but the harshness of the power-up drain when you die makes completing the game very, very difficult! Don't just throw lives at it as this will be worthless as you die pretty quickly without full guns

- try and introduce some new elements - perhaps different kinds of guns - you could 'borrow' some ideas from Super Stardust on that front so improve engine power (rather than just speed), an optional limited shield that you start off with and can be used at will (and topped up) rather than just Stealth may make the game concept a bit easier

- ever thought about allies? Computer controlled ships that you can call on when the going gets tough and that 'bug out' after a certain time frame

That's all from me for now.

Hope i goes well.

Rude!

Do the game to OS4 first then you can do it for iphone. Like rudei i dont own an iphone and probably never will.

I hope it goes well and thank you for your effort!

@Tankshell

Hello! I appreciate your effort and hope the best.

Please note that I do not own also an IPhone, and I do not plan on buying for the next years. So, I would buy that game if it was only for OS4.x.

Best regards,

I'd probably buy an OS4 version.

I do not plan on getting a mobile phone of any type, during my entire life so the iPhone version would not interest me.

@Tankshell

I don't own an iPhone either. I would like one, but they're still out of my budget. I'm not sure I'd play too many games if I got one, but if I did, I might check your game out

BTW I love the mockup-site. It's a shame the 11 Jan has a reflection from 19 Jan though
