Sorry, but why do you think supporting radeon hd is a challenge at all, when there's no 3d nor any kind of "overlay" support. And without this, it's only a huge regression from the so called weak gpus...

Supporting radeon hd in such a limited way is definitely no trouble. That's something morphos gfx driver developers usually do in an afternoon or so.... :)

@Fab

So why they didn't make it when MOS has been showed running on 460ex almost an year ago?
It would have been sufficient to prepare support for RadeonHD just one or two days before Pianeta Amiga 2012

However M.A.C.E. in definetely more enjoyable on 460 with radeon HD6670 where in game there are 100+ fps, while on Pegasos2 with Radeon 9200 I have about 25 fps. It's still good but not so fluid as on 460

Mace uses compositing.
Your Radeon 9xxx has a GfxBench2D score of about 90 for compositing.
Your Radeon HD6670 has a score of about 550 .
Six times faster .
Even my Sam440ep-Flex with a Radeon Hd6670 gives a score of 330 .
More than three and a half times faster .
The scores are based on an average for seven diferent rectangle sizes so the difference can be much more for a given size.
Maximum for your Peg II would be about 120.
For My Sam Flex 710
And Your Sam460ex 1115.
Also depends on the model of the card.
My faster Radeon HD6670 gives an average score of 430 in the Sam-Flex and a maximum of the same 1115 as with the Sam460ex

i've already seen morphos run (not officially) on some radeon x1xxx serie years ago. Supporting basic radeon features is definitely not an issue, but until now, there was no reason to support that since there was no hw allowing to plug it. With some powermac G5 models, it would now be possible and interesting, sure. But just like on OS4, what's the point, without 3D or even "overlay" abilities.

Basic compositing is nice, but scoring 0 at all 3d games and being insanely slow with video players is only a huge regression compared to a r300 card.

Limited support is better then no support.

And just like with OS4, having 2D driver will enable
you to work on 3D and overlay, its not like hardware of the cards
doesn`t support them

Such Radeon Drivers could teoretically just be ported to x86/ARM
in the future, so unless you switch to nVIDIA that route is anyway on the roadmap ...

P.S.
Mace performance is nice presentation that weak CPU with nice GPU and newer RAM can
outperform nice CPU with weak GPU ...

Not really. Programmers just decided to ignore 90% of features (3D acceleration) of those weak GPUs, because they are not supported by drivers for nice GPUs. Ask yourself what performance could be achieved if M.A.C.E. used hardware 3D acceleration? It is possible then that R9200 would give better performance than HD 6xxx with its current driver.

Weak CPU with weak GPU put into good use can outperform nice CPU with nice GPU utilized in 5%...

@g_kraszewski

Surely, its just the taste.

Rendering, games and multimedia - everything that can be made GPU dependent.

Surely RadeonHD series offers a lot more and would present platform as modern,
if utilized to their best. That few high end G5 Macs and few future SAM 460 licenses do deserve a full
support which is MorphOS tradition

I do count on mighty Radeon inside X1000 to save the day ... one day

Hope that one of the morpos gfx driver developers has a free afternoon or two soon.

A demo of MOS on Sam460ex with 2D on Radeon HD6xxx series cards would be nice to see.
And would probably generate quite a bit of interest .

@Spectre660

No clue what gave you the idea that all problems are limited to the graphics card support. They aren't.

I don´t think so, MACE is not that kind of game suited for 3D. Compositing is useable also for some 3D accellerated stuff through Wazp3D (eg. FPSE).

@jacadcaps

The level of Linux support on both Sam440ep and Sam460ex would also indicate
that these are not the easiest pieces of hardware to support.
Even under AmigaOS4.1 the onbaord SATA driver for the Sam460ex is not yet finished.
Fell free to quote the 'When its done" timetable as it is the reality .

@ikir

Maybe someone could do a poll to get an idea of the interest of current Sam460ex owners. Then see if it makes sense to do something like a Bounty.

I could be wrong, but I suspect Hyperion might not like it on their forum for some strange reason. :)

@Spirantho

Then we could create it here.
Just start a new thread with a poll with a request that only
SAM 460/A1 500 users vote and do leave a comment
