Hello,

we had just the discussion regarding missing office port for amiga. I think that this misses not only for AmigaOS but for all platforms. I would think it could be a good idea to make a bounty (f.e. on power2people or amigabounty) that covers all NG platforms. The programmer(s) who take the bounty defines what be the first platform but the program must be easy portable at the end. Aros will have a MUI update for Zune too so we could anticipate MUI 4 (like on AmigaOS or MorphOS) for GUI. There should be at least a proof that it runs on other platforms (without optimization).

What do you think? I would be interested to donate for it and a lot of others too. And it would be easier to find a developer for it.

Surely, it would unite bounty givers like Power2People, Amiga Bounty ... and would be benefit to all, since all 3 flavors need an Office Downside as that means additional work and testing, and having a team of few persons (that have MOS, AROS and OS4 hardware and software and skills) would be beneficial.

@vox

the port should of course be optimized for one platform but at least be compileable and run on one or both others (without optimizations). So best would be a joined team or at least some others should give advice and test it (f.e. kas1 as example for AOS and one developer for Aros when first target would be MorphOS). GUI should be MUI 4 (Zune will get updated in future)

Good intentions, however I don't agree on this point:

Quote:

For a cross-platform project to succeed, it should embrace the lowest common-denominator available at the moment, which unfortunately happens to be Zune ATM. This would indeed benefit other possible ports like M68K one for Amithlon and UAE users. Unless proven wrong, I'd start donating to a similar bounty only after Zune gets properly updated. To build a house you first need to make a hole in the ground, you can't do that afterwards.

I fear in this point that the two other camps will not agree on it when it will be a very low (common) base. I cannot judge how big the difference is. It should perfectly run on one and run at least without optimization on the two others. It would be good if the update of Zune would be parallel and in cooperation.

@cgutjahr

What do you mean by that? Both use their own system and MUI cannot be used?

@OlafS25

Sorry to be negative, but this looks too much like Amizilla to me.

I think the complications of an uber-bounty like this outweigh the extra cash you get from all three platforms being involved.

Unless you can make the tasks small enough for one or two developers to achieve in a reasonable amount of time, you can throw thousands of pounds at it, but nobody will take it up.

Chris

I think we should not start to say "impossible" right away. One camp alone is too small (lacking developers and enough money) so a unified action would have bigger chances.

but that is a problem of Aros that the focus was not enough on Applications and the Workbench. I would donate for it because it is needed for all. Zune has to be updated not only for this but also for OWB.

I've spent plenty of money on cross platform projects. I refuse to spend money on a project that might work if Zune gets updated. If Zune gets fixed to meet the requirements then and only then will I donate.

@joeled

No, it is not important if I am for it and another against it. We should start the bounty and then search for developers that will take it. The Amiga-Community seems expecially positive, "nothing is possible" so to say

We should start it and not hear on persons that are negative. Everything is possible
