I was going to post an attempt at analysing why the AW.net moderators don't see that a tiny minority (probably 1-3 people) are doing trolling that's quite obvious when you've been watching them for a while. But it was quite long, and I'm not sure whether many would read all of it. So instead I decided to use the conclusions I reached, in what I hope is a slightly more effective way...

Here's a time-honed receipy for how to troll, without breaking the TOS & avoiding intervention from the AW.net moderators:

(a) Avoid making personal attacks, and especially avoid insults. This would be a dead give-away!

(b) Don't express opinions on something, but rather simply state facts that can be taken negatively. The facts only have to be vaguely-related, and may be unimportant details & irrelevant in the bigger picture, so don't bother thinking too hard. The facts can even be out-of-date. You may not win the argument, but you aren't really trying to!

(c) Avoid being drawn into debates where you would have to justify your thinking (since you don't really have any). Just ignore any decent arguments people make, while keeping an eye out for weak arguments or opinions that will allow you to post something negative.

(d) To avoid being too obvious, make sure that you don't repeat your "facts" more than once per page (about 20 posts). That way most people won't notice you are recycling the same old junk.

(e) If possible try to avoid sticking to a single thread, and instead move between different threads, to help reduce your profile. And leave a thread entirely (at least for a few pages) if someone manages to conclusively disprove just about everything you said (you can start posting again when people have forgotten what he said).

(f) It can really help if you have a "partner in crime", but this must be someone you really trust. They can start slightly naive threads, which will then give you the opportunity to post "corrections". Since you didn't start the thread, it will be far less suspicious when you start posting the same old junk in it.

That's it for the moment, but I'm sure we'll come up with some more good tricks in time. Just remember to have patience - it is far easier to knock something down than it is to build it. In just a few months or years you & a few friends can completely ruin the place!

I suggest we from now on ignore such threads entirely. These post would vanish quickly from front page if people did not reply in such threads.

@Tomas

You think so? I don't.

When every tread is used for trolling its hard to see how ignoring treads should help.

I've been a long time lurker here, and reluctant to get involved in the day to day bickering and #### comparisions that seem to be rule rather than exception in the AW community.

But this thread is just trolling raised to the nth degree.

The original poster should grow up and grow a set rather than starting pointless threads that do nothing but increase the level of animosity in the amiga community!

I'm sure that he will also consider this post as trolling because it doesn't agree with his narrow view of who's right and wrong.

Gees, thanks man! I was always looking for a 'trolling for dummies' solution, but couldn't find any :)

Unfortunatelly, there are no good topics for trolling at the moment, but this advices will surelly be bookmarked

May the troll be with you

Ignoring such threads would be like ignoring AW.net, it's every thread these days. 3-5 persons are doing their best to ruin the experience of this site to many people.
I don't enjoy AW.net as I used to because of a few people and spend more and more time on amigans.net these days.

I completely agree with this (although I would suggest that the individual posts should be ignored, not the entire threads). I don't know why the nay sayers are here, or why they waste their time complaining about stuff all the time (as opposed to just leaving if they don't like it), but one thing is for sure: it's everyone else on here who gives them their ammunition.

The fact is, the general Amiga community are very positive about the progress being made, and thankful for it too. But because we give the nay sayers so much air time on the front page, it *seems* as if that is not the case. And this does nothing to thank the people working hard to drive the platform forward. People who do it often for little or no reward.

Everyone should just ignore the negativity posts. It really is that simple, yet it appears to be so difficult!

@NutsAboutAmiga

Yeah I registered in 2008, almost posted and thought better of it. Personally I spend less and less time here because of the trolling.

When I refer to trolling I think that the supports are as bad as the opponents making ludicrous claims and dreams that just gives ammo to the others.

I was particularly amused by some of the claims made by the supports in the recent "A-EON FAQ part 3" thread ChrisH himself stated that developing SMP would be "perhaps close to the effort of the Timberwolf port" as involved as a port of firefox is, it is only a port of the required dependant app tree. Comparing this to the effort required to a complete rewrite of the OS kernel that the PROPER implementation of SMP is either very naive or just completely underestimating the enormity of the task at hand.

I will consider purchasing an X1000 but only when SMP is released, depending if the SMP is that and not some form lesser multi processing like warpos.

Anyway back to the shadows for me I think ;)

@ChrisH

You've also described the basis (altogether) of a good argument/debater. Don't you have to be one yourself to recognize this??

I would also suggest you add one more to the list, say just enough stuff that ChrisH will have a descenting opinion (or mention Microsoft and "good" in the same sentence (smiling with a big grin on my face (just kidding))..

Where I am from everyone is eligible to have their own descent and say whatever they want and even make personal attacks on others and they are okay with it. The sky doesn't fall, it makes life interesting people HAVE opinions (even those that probably shouldn't).

I bet the trolling accounts for more hits and more participation here..

Just to show you how admired and respected this is with my folks and their culture check out this facebook commentary on how to have a successful argument on Facebook (see we teach this at an early age)..

An Honest Facebook Political Argument..

Bottom line.. You should start having fun with the rest of us with this..

/Trolling Mode On
What a load of rubbish, you are talking complete pap
/Trolling Mode Off

I am joking above of course for the avoidance of doubt !

Very interesting read, I find it best not to take anything too seriously, if someone is posting just to cause an argument, with no real purpose, then I just ignore the post and move on.

I mean, you've got to have a sense of humour to survive in this world, and be prepared for the use of large amounts of sodium chloride, esp in the Amiga World, reminds me of the ST Vs Amiga format wars of the past.

Remember, life is too short to worry about the trolls !
