KX Light help

Trying to AF 2009 to autoboot with KX Light, but I keep getting the following error:

X Window session terminated with errors.
Please check and retry '/etc/init.d/x session start'.

There's a double space between "check" and "and", so I think it's trying to tell me a file to look at, but I don't know what. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks!

@Nuder_Try

I'm not having much luck either.

When I try and run Knoppix on my eeePC i get:
/home/user/D:/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX: line 3: insmod: command not found

Press to continue...

I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Would love to get AF 2009 running on my Linux based Asus eeePC.

@1Mouse

That sounds like your GRUB might not be set up correctly. What are the arguments you're passing?

@Nuder_Try

Can you give some more details about what led up to this error? Did the CD boot OK (splash screen, bootup text, etc)?

@1Mouse

Hi, same question to you! What happened just before this error came up? I'm assuming you're using an external USB CD drive? Did the splash screen show up? Etc...

@Fractallyte

Boot from CD works fine. Install (version 8.1) works OK. Splash screen comes up, then stops. I had to turn the splash screen off to get the error. Tried coping the CD to the partion, edit grub manually to point to the correct locations, and I get an error saying it cannot find the X-server for the graphics card.

It's strange that it can't find an xorg driver, because it's supposed to fall back to VESA...

I'm still investigating - just having some problems booting KX Light from USB on my notebook! I know what my boot problem is, just need a little time to fix it...

@g01df1sh

The solution is to set the /Amiga directory to read/write for all users. The command is something like this: 'chmod -R 666 /Amiga'.

You'll need to start KX Light in text mode, without the splash screen. The boot option for this is 'af-fbtxt 2'.

I can't remember the exact details, so if you can't get anywhere with this, give me a day or two to get it installed on my notebook, then I can help with anything you want!

@Fractallyte

I'll try it again in the next day or so, see if I can get you the exact error message.

@g01df1sh

OK, I managed to get KX Light installed on my notebook. (Some minor problems, because this model uses SATA rather than IDE.) So now you can ask all the questions you want!

If you want to install KX Light, you need to boot the CD in text mode: 'af-fbtxt 2'. Then type 'afinstall' to start the installer. I recommend using the 'full' installation option rather than 'tohd' - it gives you more flexibility.

The most recent version of KX Light sets all the file/directory permissions automatically, so normally one doesn't have to worry about it. However, if something goes wrong (or perhaps you're using the previous version of KXL), here are the instructions:

Start up KX Light (the installed version, not the CD!)
Drop to the console by pressing 'Ctrl + Alt + Backspace'. Press 'Enter' once or twice to bring up the BASH prompt.

Now type the following:
init 2
chown -R knoppix:knoppix /Amiga/dir
chmod -R +w /Amiga/dir
init 5

The emulation will restart, with full read-write access.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any problems.

Amir

@Fractallyte

Thanks Fractallyte I can now save a screen mode setting so im guessing my save problem is now sorted but . Now I have a new one not sure if it because i am using a dvdrom drive. I can open the contents of a cd but when i try to install some thing eg OS3.5 I get read write error as soon as i click on the install icon. I Dont have a standard cdrom to try at the min. Might be able to get one from another pc in the house . Also tried another dvd / cdrom writter but that was even worse and made the system real slow to boot and did not see cd when i put cd in drive also made mouse pointer stick. Disconnected drive and system booted fine. Im getting the feeling it does not like dvdrom drives or I have a another issue some where.

@g01df1sh

Hi some more info i could copy os 3.5 from cd to work partion and install from there. so note sure why installer wont work straight from cdrom drive . Also after installing os3.5 i lost the dock bar down the bottom which you get with default amiga forever install. So long since i used amiga it all seem stange at the min.

@g01df1sh

I had a similar problem when trying to install software from CD. Came up with the same solution as you: copy the CD to the hard drive and go from there!

As for the dock bar disappearing: I don't know, perhaps check that it's still in WBStartup drawer after the upgrade? Double clicking gives you the option to quit, and clicking again restarts it...

@Fractallyte

Finally got a chance to get the exact error msg:

"Error: No suitable X-Server found for your card."

This is a copy of the CD onto the partition and GRUB edited to boot off. Is there something special I'd need in GRUB, as booting from the CD works fine.

@g01df1sh

Uh - are you doing a fresh install of OS3.5? If so, the dock bar isn't part of the distribution - it's a separate add-on!
