| Hi all,
Although we didn't finish it before x-mas, mostly due to some personal issues, we can already provide you with a nice little teaser video of our upcoming game.
The video was recorded directly from our sam460ex / RadeonHD 4650 using an Elgato Game Capture device. No cutting or whatever, loading times / game speed is exactly as recorded.
Coming very soon
Have fun and happy x-mas! The Cherry-Darling team

Wow... This looks great, and the fact that you've pulled this off using HW compositing makes it 10 times more impressive. Wazp3D could really use a software depth buffer implementation to provide better Warp3D support for Radeon HD cards. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

It looks really nice. It's also great that you decided to take full advantage of the compositing system so users without Warp3D don't have to resort to Wazp3D.
Will there be a full screen mode for single player or network play, if network play is planned.
Also what's the music used in the video. |

| @Daytona675x Nice . You are proving well Compositing can be used for 3D games
@Bszili >Wazp3D could really use a software depth buffer implementation to provide better Warp3D support for Radeon HD cards. Not so easy... Drawing in a (soft) Zbuffer is not difficult The real difficulty is to mix this soft outpout (that say draw this pixel yes/no) with the Composing engine It may be be an alpha bitmap that "mask" the part of the triangle that must be drawn But the real problem is how to store this "mask" A simple mask for the whole screen is not enough as a simple compositing call may draw several triangles (masks) at the same place So it will need to generate a mask per triangle drawn ... all that become overcomplicated and inefficient as masks should be in vram (so slow to draw in software)
To the end the better/simpler soultion may be a "painter algorithm" that store all the drawings for one "frame" then Z sort all the triangles then draw all Of course will need a very big buffer to store all the drawings = triangles (and states for this triangle) ... not impossible ... but each year I hope that Mesa/gallium3D will be released ... so no need for me to code that

That really sounds complicated, I wonder how Daytona675x solved the problem by using a soft depth buffer then. I think z-sorting everything would be too slow with a large number of triangles. I don't want to sound like Eeyore, but Gallium3D/Mesa was announced 4 years ago. The best we can do is working with what we have, i.e. HW compositioning. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

I'd be interested to hear his solution too. After I created the Composite3DDemo, I thought of creating a variant of Warnock's algorithm for use as depth buffer. It works at the triangle level so it's suitable for use with CompositeTags(). It would also have an increasing overhead with more triangles, but it should be smaller than with z-sorting. However, it would be quite complex to program, which is why I never actually tried it.
You could get away without using a depth buffer for rendering terrain. Simply divide it into tiles, and render from far away to close. Each tile's triangles could easily be generated in far-to-close order on-the-fly. Add in backface culling and doing rough visibility checks on terrain tiles (i.e., don't render tiles that definitely aren't visible), and you should be able to render reasonably large and complex terrains.
@Daytona675x Really nice work.
Hans

Well, more or less in the same quality the good old blitter can be used for 3D games Or: there are ways to workaround some (not all, but in this case enough of) those limitations thanks to the fast RadeonHD GPUs which allow to waste frame-time for such hacks.

Actually it's not about me. Our graphics guy H2o has some trouble (nothing really serious like health issues or so, simply some time and nerv consuming stuff that's going to be worked out soon)

@all Happy x-mas, and now back to work. We have to finish up a game
