OS4 on AOne? (How far?)

Question for Hyperion and others involved.

Seeing as the new Exec appears to be 100% PPC now and Hyperion and others are in the process of converting modules over to PPC, has there been any attempt to boot OS 4.0 on the AOne yet? Or is it strictly classic PPC before attempting the port of drivers for the AOne version.

As always I'm scratching around for information and I'm just wondering how far AOne port has got to!

P.S. Make sure you video the first full WB boot on an AOne! Releasing that will probably make a lot of people happy!

ExecSG has always been 100% PPC

The PPC-only code isn't strictly needed to boot on the AmigaOne. The emulator is always used to boot OS 4, even the 68k parts. You could theoretically rip out the 68k once the system is running, it is only used on the first boot.

Concerning the current state of the AmigaOne version, watch this space for further updates.

Well, seeing it for the first time will definitely make me happy

@Rogue: ". . . will certainly make me happy"

"will" implies it hasn't happened yet. Why are you wasting time by posting here, man?

Is Hyperion planning to announce something soon?

Yeah, that sounds pretty imminent to me too... is it just wishful thinking?

It seems that OS4 on AmigaOne is coming soon

An announcement along the lines of "we're 100% finished with feature implementation - all that's left now is fixing the bugs found by betatesters" would make my day

I don't want to break your dream, but I don't think the OS4 will be
available soon. Or maybe an half-working version.

A lot of things needed to be rewrite and adapt like :
- remove the hardware dependances
- PCI/AGP stuff
- Radeon/Sis ... driver
- graphics.library
- timer.device
- keyboard

But it's true that I don't know the current stats of that.

In fact, all the drivers. Ths may take a long while. And I don't speak
about the IDE driver ...

Well, you may have to be a lot of more patient.

?!? what's so special about the IDE driver? I suspect it will be quite similar to the one in UBoot, maybe even just calls to the one in UBoot. Ditto the keyboard. I doubt timer.device will pose much of a challenge, I've coded timers on via motherboards myself and it's just a day or two's work (ISA timers are very simple beasts).

2D graphics drivers will come courtesy of the SNAP video drivers, 3D (non-voodoo) is supposed to come in 4.1 or an update.

PCI/AGP, IIRC they have already finished pci.library for the AOne.

I expect to hear that they're finishing off the other, more complex device drivers like ethernet and USB, and ironing out the last wrinkles in Intuition/Reaction.

> But it's true that I don't know the current stats of that.

Great. Then why the heck do you think you're qualified to tell ? To your points:

- What hardware dependencies ? There are next to none in the remaining code.

- The PCI/AGP stuff is done since ages, even the A1 version of the kernel we showed in England did already contain a PCI/AGP-enabled expansion.library.

- We don't need Radeon/SiS drivers, as we have SNAP.

- graphics.library is indeed a problem, and that's what we're working on right now.

- timer.device: Hans-Jörg re-wrote timer.device so it uses the PPC's internal timer instead of a CIA. Took him exactly three days. The result is a timer device that can be used on *any* PPC hardware. For example, it works on both the CSPPC and the A1.

- Keyboard: We have a keyboard.device that works on the A1.

Bottom line: It *IS* true, you don't know the current state. Then why the heck do you think you have to comment on it ?

Except for the graphics.library, most of the points you brought up are moot. And that's being addressed while we speak. The absence of a fully implemented graphics.library is currently the only thing preventing us from booting

So sorry, I don't want to break *YOUR* dream, but we're further advanced than some people (including you) want to make others think.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk about it. If people would adhere to that, there'd be a lot less BS making the round, and the climate would be a lot less heated.

Yes, and it shows through painfully in every line you write.

Well, don't see any offense in my post, that was not my intention.
I just gave my opinion, that's all !

Anyway, even if you have the graphics.library, there are still many
things to do before having a full working PPC OS, no ?

what about the dos, intuition, USB, ethernet...

I just wanted to say that in my eyes, the OS4 can't be ready soon as
some people expect here.

but of course, I'm not as "in" the dev as you !

@ EntilZha

Ahh... so nice to see the two brothers in the forum again! (I used to read through it before I signed up with brother Bodie).

Thanks for the details. I wish you (both brothers) every continued success with the OS. I can't wait to get my hands on it! (As does brother Bodie )

Come on, man! Please read the stuff which is already been made public by Hyperion like the status reports on several occasions (e.g. AmiWest, OS4 Tour) before posting.

From these documents you can derive which modules are ready and fully PPC. This includes dos and intuition AFAIK.

Do yourself a favour and read the stuff instead of posting BS.

> Well, don't see any offense in my post,

No, maybe not. However, you show an archetypical behavior: Speaking about things you don't know about. That's what IMHO maked the current situation so heated.

> what bout the dos, intuition, USB, ethernet ...

What about it ? DOS, Intuition are already fully PPC (and hardware independant, before you ask), USB and ethernet are currently finalized.

See ? You're doing it again. Assuming. You show another archetypical behavior: If you are proven wrong, you come up with even more things you don't have a clue about.

> I just wanted to say that in my eyes, the OS4 can't be

To make this assumption, you'd have to know how far we are.

If you re-read my previous post, you'll see this line: "The absence of a fully implemented graphics.library is currently the only thing preventing us from booting".

This line does not leave any room for interpretation. I said the only missing thing is graphics.library. Where do you see the words "DOS" or "Intuition" ? Oh yeah, you don't see them.

> but of course, I'm not as "in" the dev as you !

Thanks for acknowledging it. You just made my point.

- edit- Sorry, typo

Just as you gave your "opinion" on the A1 motherboard without any aperant knowhow of the situation.

Instead of trying to snipe at everything said it´s usualy a lot better to read what is said and formulate questions after the answer is understood.

Better try to get atleast AOS4 beta for A1 out before peg2+MOS combination becomes available.
