Graphics.library is one of the most hardware dependant pieces. Basically, we're doing a minimal version that is only big enough to be patched over by Picasso96 later on.

I hope we finish it in September.

Well, I did not speak about MorpOS before.
And I just gave my opinion that's all folk.

Anyway, that's true that I like MorphOS, and use everyday and stuff.

Now, if others people prefer to chose the AmigaOS 4 instead, then it's
there own choice !

Then if I meet an AmigaOS 4 user, we may have a debate about why
MorphOS ? Why AmigaOS 4? etc ...

But I never ment to insult anyone...
Moreover, it's really possible to use the same AmigaOS 68k 3.1
software on both OS, like SongPlayer !

Voila, bye

If you want to be taken serious, please try to state your opinion in a more sensible way. They way you put it definitely wasn't.

In all fairness, it is vey hard to estimate how long a project of this magnitude will take.

Just the other day I noticed that MS had pushed back the release date of the LongHorn version of XP.

One of the problems is that we don't have a point of reference. When we do a game port, we know more or less from experience how long something would take if we could work on it full-time.

We never did write a kernel before nor did we rewrite graphics.library before.

Estimations tend to be no more than guesses in that perspective.

OS 4.0 has moreover come a long way in terms of functionality since the project was first announced.

Having some more cash to hire a few developers on a full time basis would also certainly help.

The bottomline is that whilst it has taken far longer than we anticapted originally, the end-result will

1) certainly be completed

2) be a hell of a lot more feature-rich than we originally planned

3) will be the biggest OS upgrade ever in the AmigaOS history.

@EntilZha

You have a light sabre, but isn't your nick from Babylon5? As such wouldn't you be more at home with a small hand held firearm

Anyhow, thanks to both you and Hans-J for clearing up some issues and letting us know how things are getting along. Your input(s) are very welcome.

@Others

Please let's not turn this into a which OS is better etc thead. There are enough of these doing the rounds on other sites to last a lifetime, and none actually really achieve anything.

what do you mean by "patched over"?
i though on the aone p96 would simply replace graphics.library completely and not just patch it? how will it work on the cyberstorm version? could you give a bit more detail about that topic, please?

any idea when the beta test for the amigaone version will start then? i mean right after the graphics.library has been rewritten (as you expected - maybe end of september?)

thanks in advance and
byebye...

People are trying to give you the impression that patching is a bad thing, or a hack. In reality, it happens all the time. For example, RAMLIB patches Exec's OpenLibrary, CloseLibrary, OpenDevice, CloseDevice, GetInterface and DropInterface calls.

Yes, Picasso patches graphics. Picasso96 isn't a complete replacement for graphics, it "only" replaces those functions that have chipset dependencies. Others stay intact. What we're doing is rewrite graphics functions so that Picasso96 can complete the gaps and make it a full graphics system. In that sense, Picasso96 indeed replaces graphics.

Like I said we'd rather not guess.

That's the whole point, isn't it?
Since you don't have classic hardware on the A1, you only implement the bits of graphics library that picasso96 doesn't patch, then let p96 do the normal thing.

On Cyberstorm you'll want to support AGA as well, so need a full graphics.library...

Right?

If I didn't know better, it looks like you're giving us "the finger" in your avatar

Good to see you 2 posting a bit more lately, perhaps that indicates the stress times are over for you ?

Speaking of Babylon5, Here a very apt quote from the final epsiode of Season 4 Entitled:

"The Deconstraction of Falling Stars"

DEDICATED TO ALL THE
PEOPLE WHO PREDICTED
THAT THE BABYLON
PROJECT WOULD FAIL IN
ITS MISSION.

FAITH MANAGES.

Bear that in mind.

It's not exactly directed at you here... you know who

Unfortunately, the avatar pics are a little too small, otherwise you would see the fuzzy stuff I put over the finger

I'll be watching

I have a feeling (despite what NicoPPC says) we are getting close now. Once the system is booting on the AmigaOne, regardless of its initial usability, it will mean a big boost for your team as well as a lot of Amiga users!

Cheers to all involved.

hi,

off topic i know

I think that its safe to say that most of us with the new AmigaOne hardware are using some form of Linux, mainly debian i believe ? my question is this.... When AmigaOS4 becomes available to us ,will we be able to use our existing harddrive setups ( new partition for the AmigaOS of course ) or will we have to scrap our Linux Setups, to install AmigaOS4 and then install Linux again ??
I understand that we will be able to boot into either OS.... is there provision within the AmigaOS4 installation to make this as easy as possible .... this may of been asked before, if it has iv`e missed it.

regards

Mal

It depends. If you have either an additional harddrive, or a Linux installation with a Rigid Disk Block partiition table, you'll be able to use this setup. Otherwise I'm afraid you need to reinstall - you cannot put an AmigaOS partition onto a DOS partition table...
