| Quick and probably stupid question! Does PlayCD audio work on µA1-C? I can play CD's normally using PlayCD on A1-XE but on my µA1-C all I get is the faintest of sounds coming out of the speakers, even on full volume. Both sytems are using the latest PR3 software and March firmware.
All other audio software I've tried seems to operate normally on the µA1 (& A1-XE). (eg AmigaAmp, SongPlayer etc) At first I thought it was something in my µA1 set-up but I got the chance to try PlayCD on another µA1 with the same results. Any ideas?

Operates very good here on my µA1-C, right at this moment, I'm listening to Fleetwood Mac's Behind the Mask. _________________ --------- AmigaClyde

What you have to do, is to connect a cable from the soundchip on your MicroA1 to your DVD/CDROM. An analoge audio-cable...
Then go into Tools:PlayCD and go into Information with the right mouse-button, and check the mark CD0. If your DVD is pointed to CD0:, then it should work. If your DVD is at CD1:, then set it to CD1 in the Information...
It all worked for me, but because i have an A1G4XE with SB Live! |

This doesn't answer your question, but here's my input: I can play CDs with SongPlayer, but not with PlayCD on Micro A1-C. Identical symptoms to yours - extremely faint audio.

What are your AHI settings like? That might have something to do with it.
Also - make sure that your audio cable connecting the player and the motherboard didn't get knocked out. If it did, I wish you the best of luck -- reattaching cables in a micro motherboard requires a lot of patience and swearing. _________________ former µA1-C owner Listen to my podcast, Autobiography of a Schnook (there are worse things you can do!) - schnookpodcast.com |

Thanks for the positive response.
@Helgis
I can play a CD using Songplayer. Does that use the same internal circuitry as PlayCD? I've checked inside my µA1 and the sound output on the CD drive appears to be connected to the Mobo OK?

PlayCD works here. In ToolTypes, set DOSDEV=CD0 (no colon). Did you connect a cable from the CDROM audio out to JP20 (CD In) on the mb? The CDDB option doesn't work in the current PlayCD version. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

I see, but i believe SongPlayer is using the AHI, while PlayCD plays directly from a CDROM/DVD-ROM device. That's why i mentioned you have to be sure that there is an audio-cable connected from your soundchip on your MicroA1 (if there now is such a connector on the mobo) to your DVD/CDROM, then going into Tools:PlayCD by picking Information with the right mouse-button and check the mark CD0. If your device is canalized to CD0, then use it. If not, then try CD1...
That's the things you have to do
EDIT: Forgot to mention. If you have a HIFI (i'm sure you have), then be sure you have a two-to-one-way RCA-cable (Red and black being the 2-way on one end, and a black one on the other end). This last one is to be connected to your MicroA1s' output (usually the light-green one), while the other two shall be connected to the HIFI. Red is for Right, Black for the Left. Hope you'll figure it out..
Good luck Last edited by Helgis on 18-Dec-2005 at 07:15 PM.

That is already the default tooltype for PlayCD. Note:As you know, all other audio functions well on my Micro. This is confined to PlayCD.

Songplayer spools the CD audio over the IDE interface, converting the CDDA track on the fly. On the other hand, PlayCD merely sets the CD drive to "play" which then outputs directly (via the audio cable) to the sound card._________________ After a decade away from the scene, I am back! |

Thanks for clearing that up.

Open Mixer & make sure External CD is set to max & not muted.

No Misery here. I, as you, can use the more powerful aspects of SongPlayer, TuneNet, and AmigaAmp (w/equalizer) to play CDs. Personally, I enjoy being able to adjust treble, bass, equalizer from the comfort of my chair (and mouse).
@Sundown
Thanks for the advice, but I'm fine with my plethora of programs that already play CDs. Perhaps I'll test this regardless, though.

Now I'm confused! I had already checked the mixer settings and the External CD was set to max and not muted. The mixer is envoked in my startup-sequence. However just to be sure I opened mixer and sure enough it was still set to max and not muted. Out of desperation I clicked on the mute button a couple of times and the barely auible CD which was playing (Supertramp anthology) bust into full volume
I've experienced sticky electromechanical switches but not software ones
Anyway it seems to be working now Has anyone got any ideas why this should happen?

Once before I experienced a program where the "graphical representation" of a setting did not accurately reflect the "actual setting" until "toggled". I'm not saying this is the situation here, but it -has- happened before.

OK when I reboot the µA1 it reverts to the barely audible sound with PlayCD. If I go into mixer the Exernal CD vol is set to max and it's unmuted, Clicking on it twice (to mute and unmute) fixes the audio with PlayCD. Saving the unmuted setting seems to have no effect? It still reverts to ~nil audio after a reboot?

I've got to be honest with you here. I have not even installed "mixer" and I have had no problems with audio other than the one we are currently discussing. I -will- install this and let you know what I think.

OK. I am officially a "newbie" as regards "mixer", so feel free to correct me.
(01)I unarc'd mixer.lha version 1.16 from OS4depot (02)I double clicked to open it (03)2nd slider said "External CD" so I raised it to "max" (top). Default was "off". (04)Disabled "mute" (05)Clicked on save to save preferences Note:CMI8738 for Micro was apparently automagically detected and text showing. (06)I copied the commodity (mixer&icon) into WBstartup along with the subdirectory of images (07)Cold boot of Micro (08)Control panel showed up on boot, as I have not adjusted the tooltypes yet. (09)Control panel showed "max" setting for "External CD" and "mute" disabled, just as I had set it before saving preferences (10)Inserted CD and started PlayCD
Note:Worked fine. @Sundown is absolutely correct IMO.
Edit(added):Added comments on disabling "mute" before saving preferences I have also added the tooltype CX_POPUP=NO to disable the popup on boot and the tooltype "DONOTWAIT" as reminded by @Curty
