Please test the speed with this timdemo:
Open the console in the main menu and enter following lines:
timedemo 1
demo four

I have 28 fps(1024x768) with "demo four" on my Radeon 9000 PRO.

Running OS4.1 on an AmigaONE

if awep is running in back sometimes fps drop to 4.

i really dont see the problem, the game is more than playable on a 7500 -> atleast and i am sure thomas will release an updated version one day unless someone else does it (optimized etc).

but yes...its always bla bla..mine is better than yours etc.. :I

It is stated in the readme "slow / not optimized version". I don't have Q3 files yet, but it should work ok on my 512MB Ram + 1Ghz G4 + Radeon 9200SE 128MB.

Have tried Quake 3 on my Peg2 but not on my A1 yet. Unfortunately games like quake leave me with a "sick" headache after only a few minutes of play. I know I'm a bit of a wuss! but I fly planes and sail (in real life) without any ill affects? I'll still give Q3 a try on the A1 though.

and yes it should work on your setup, it works on all mine atleast (7000,7500,9200pro ..all setups with 512mb sdram and from 32mb gfxmem to 256).

anyway my point was, I hope thomas (or someone else) finds the time to optimize Q3 in the future but seriously...i really dont like q3 ..never has but hey i'll play it if there is a server with various #amigaworld guuys on it or whatever.

i try it in my wife Pc /celeon500mhz 740mb ram winxp
atiradeon 8500Le

i get over 50fps on 1280*1024 Fulldetail/effects
if i put same detail/resolution my Amigaone (G4 933) i get only 3fps.

Im not very much into quake games myself. But the Q3 engine looks very nice. Does anyone know if it has an easy API and how much the license actually permits (Can one make shareware games from it or can someone even sell a game with the Q3 engine in it?)

I happen to remember that this is just the first version of Quake 3 for OS4 and not fully optimized yet for the 3D-system used in Pre4 OS4.0 or the one that is in the commercial version of AmigaOS 4.0, so perhaps that's why Quake 3 doesn't seem so much faster, but should still be quite playable. I don't know this as i don't have an AmigaOne to play it on yet...Still on repair, though...

Let's see what happens when PowerVixxen is out and using a PCI-Express graphic board and running the full commercial release of AmigaOS 4.0, with optimized Quake 3 Now THAT is something to speak of

True but you're comparing an optimized PC version with a quick and dirty port. Also a Radeon 8500 is much better than a Radeon 7000. The graphics can make a huge difference.

Remember how slow AmiPDF was in the original AmigaOS 4 prerelease? Compare that to how it runs now on update 4. Given the time to finish off the Quake 3 port, I'm sure the framerate will go up significantly.

I think your comparison shows just how much better a Radeon 8500 is compared to a 7000. The 7k is unusable above 640x480x16bit and it does not have hw T&L, which makes a huge speed difference. Also I guess your Radeon 7k has only 32MB of videomem. Since you have an XE, you could use something like a Radeon 7500 or 9000 with at least 64MB of videomem. That should play quite smoothly in resolutions like 800x600 or 1024x768, but it still won't be as fast as on a PC, because the current W3D drivers of OS4 don't support hw T&L, if we had that, things like Q3 could be 2-3 times faster...

I suffer the same, but not on all the games. I can watch others play easily, but
as soon as i'm in charge it begins, i can only stand it for a few minutes...

...well, i'm into adventures anyway
