Not at all for a developer with the experience and (commercial) track record of Jamie. Try doubling it, and then you might be close to a "rather well paid job".

The requested funding simply represents what it takes to "keep the lights on" as it were. It does not allow for a salary of any size to be paid to me personally.
By way of reference, my last job (including the position I turned down to write Amiga software full time), paid better than US $70,000 a year and also included health insurance and other benefits valued at an additional one third of your annual salary. Running your own company, with a small number of employees (like one), means you have to pay hundreds more (a month!) for insurance than you do if you work for a big company where they have the leverage to get much lower rates and even pay part of the premiums themselves. So you have to take that into account in terms of income. That makes the average salary for someone with my level of experience closer to US $93,000 a year.
I don't know about other parts of the world, but in the USA a salary of US $36,000 (about £19,000) a year means you no longer use the phrase "Would you like fries with that?" during your normal work day, and that's about it.
If you have not already, I would suggest you have another look through the original thread at: http://amigaworld.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=3260
I would like to add that I have noticed that some people on this site and elsewhere appear to be continually stuck in the idea that "such a tiny community" is somehow powerless. This is simply not true. One person with the right amount of dedication can change everything. If I did not believe that, I would not be here today.
Let's take this FREEAVD sponsorship idea for example. What is needed to guarantee that full time development is able to continue is US $3000 (£1575) a month. You would only need 300 people to contribute US $10 a month (about £5.25) to make that happen, and there are far more than 300 people out there in the Amiga community today. I can tell you for sure that there are Amiga people out there who do not even own an AmigaONE as yet, or even plan to program anything themselves that can see the importance this kind of software, and as such have already made a purchase or other financial contribution.
Ask yourself this, would you pay US $20 to $60 (about £10.50 to £31.52) for a piece of AmigaOS4 software that can literally let you design and write simple freeware Amiga applications, complete with GUI interface in five minutes or less? To easily create your own graphical interfaces for all those command line only programs being brought over from Open Source?
The AVD project as a whole has been in development already for a little over 18 months. The next 2 to 6 months are going to see the real result of this early foundation work as AVD moves into a truly usable suite of powerful applications. Would it not be great to have such software openly available to everyone as new machines and the "official" release of OS4 draws near?
There is no set minimum to any of the monthly sponsorship contributions. Once the initial US $3000 bounty amount is reached, a FREEWARE version of AVD (hence FREEAVD) will be produced and maintained from that point forward. As AVD grows in features, so will FREEAVD. The only limitation is that FREEAVD will only produce freeware programs in binary form only, whereas AVD can output full source and hence produce software any way you see fit.
Since there are no set minimum terms for any of the requested sponsorship levels, you can put in for a month or two, then cancel it. Start up again later, or just throw in a one time donation, whatever you want. As I have stated before ALL contributions will be counted toward the purchase of the full AVD Suite, if you choose to buy a copy later on. This is about helping grow the Amiga software base, and not about me getting some kind of "free" salary. If I had the means to continue funding myself I would, it's as simple as that. However, consider that a few dollars a month can go a long way and isn't the investment into Amiga software worth it anyway, for all of us?
Best Regards,
Jamie Krueger

Ok, lets see if there are still people interested in FREEAVD, can you raise your hands.
Ok, from all people that have raised their hands can those stand up who would like to do a small donation.
Ok, what are you waiting for then, just do it.
And now a big thanks and an aplause to all the sponsors.

I like the project and AVD (already paid for my copy of AVD), but I'm a little tight on funds ATM. I've just pushed the project bounty over the $700 mark (status page not updated yet though).
People who can't afford to sponsor the project should consider making a one-time donation. The most important thing is to get the project bounty up to $3000. Then Jamie will commit to FreeAVD's development.

I have just updated the FREEAVD Status Page to reflect the donations and sponsorships that have been received to date.
As you can see it's now hit the $1457.00 out of $3000.00 mark!
A HUGH thank you to everyone who has continued to support this effort. I am working night and day to deliver on some cool new updates in time for both the Pianeta 2006 show in Italy, and for the AmiWest show in the USA (of which I will be there personally to demostrate AVD and answer questions, etc.)
This funding is VERY critical at the moment and your help will make the difference.
Thanks again, and please continue to help if you can.
Best Regards,
Jamie Krueger

My economy is a little tight at them moment so additional donations or monthly payments is not possible for me in September. Next month will be different though. I'll probably be doing a one time donation plus up my monthly payment.
Thanks again for doing this very important work for the community!

| Wooow, we are almost in the middle of the 3000 $, that is great.
Common people, lets do a little push more, so that Jamie can start working on FREEAVD as soon as possible. Gogogo.

Hehe, well i have to admit that you are not alone.
Ok, we have 443 $ left, that would make 44 sponsors of 10 $.
That is to do i think. _________________ A1G3-SE + OS4.1 u1 iso (x2) |

It's up to $2617.00 now with $383.00 left to go. Maybe we should start a new thread to see if we can get a few others interested. We should of course warn toaks so that he doesn't feel obliged to donate again. He's done his bit.
While I've bought the commercial version, I can see a BIG advantage for the Amiga OS4 community if there are decent freeware development tools available. I'm impressed with the beta versions I've tested so far.
