Hmmm...sounds painful. Okay, since I have the delightful ability to boot into Lenny using (I think) kernel 2.6.18, can't I run MOL from that partition? If so, will I need to rebuild anything at all, or just install it and see what it does?

Yes, you can run it from this partition. But didn't you try it out already and it didn't work under the 2.6.18 kernel? If so, I would (still) have to recompile the kernel modules.

Yes, just tried it again. It says it needs to recompile ther kernel modules. I try to run ./autoconf and of course it doesn't exist. So I go and try to dowload autoconf and I get missing dependencies.
So I run apt-get -f install and it brings up a window telling me "configuring linux image 2.6.26-2-powerpc ... do you wish to continue (and lots of stuff about setting up an initrd image RAM disk).
Do I want to do this?

Okay, for laughs I tried it.
Compiling the kernel for MOL gets a lot further. However, now I get this error:

Compiling blk_dmg.o
In file included from ./include/blk_dmg.h:37,

make[2]: *** [sub-drivers-all] Error 2
make[1]: *** [sub-src-all] Error 2
make: *** [auto-bootstrap] Error 2

Had to comment out the include for stdio.h in the blk_dmg.c file to continue.
Then had to install libx11-dev and libxtst-dev to continue.
Now I get an error:

--- The kernel source directory '/usr/src/linux' does not exist.
--- Set the KERNEL_SOURCE environment variable to the appropriate directory.

I'm guessing I need to install the kernel source files in /usr/src/linux yes?
Do I have the kernel source files for the AmigaOne?

Hmmmm

Yes, the kernel source is available here and needs to go to /usr/src/linux (usually there is a softlink to the correct linux source directory).

But if I remember correctly I had to compile MoL under Debian Etch for some reason (I think it was a problem with some shared library under Debian Lenny). And last but not least it was also an older version (0.9.72 ), as the newest one had a broken build script or something like this.

I can try to setup a Etch chroot environment to build MoL in the evening. Maybe I can come up with a working build...

Please don't forget to add the "global_use_mmio=0" for the 3c59x and "slow_down=1" parameter for the sata_sil driver (in /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf) so that the installer can be used on A1SEs, too. These parameters shouldn't hurd on other AmigaOnes.

Thanks for the picture!

Sorry, I mixed up the entry addresses of the 2.6.32 and 3.2 kernels before. Thus your image needs to be regenerated with the correct entry address. See here for an adequate mkimage command line.

Doh! Actually it's a bug fix to the script you found. With extra options for controlling drive dma wirh libata.

That said I didn't test the iso. But it should be fine. Same link as last time.

Did you ever get a chance to try that? Just wondering if you came up with a working version I can run in Lenny.....

Thanks!

Sorry for the silence! I was sidetracked with other topics the last two days.

I tried it out, but ran into a problem with the kernel source while compiling the MoL kernel module, because I cross-compiled the 2.6.18 kernel on a x86 machine. Thus I may have to recompile the kernel on my A1SE. I hope I can get this fixed until the weekend.

No problkem. BTW I tested it and found a bug.

I almost forgot what I added in. After pressing C for Controller 1 and 2 it becomes All controllers. But it's cut iff to an A. On the A[ll] setting it will allow to disable DMA on all controllers with libata option.

RE MoL I recall recompiling it for 2.6.31 I'm sure. I will download to my Linux and have ago.

Did I patch the 2.6.31 kernel to run MoL!?

If you did, is that the same kernel version 2.6.31 that I have, or is it different?

Good question! I can answer it, when I have found the kernel source I used to compile the 2.6.31 kernel package.

edit: At least there is nothing MoL specific in the patch file for the 2.6.31 kernel. So I guess MoL will not run on this kernel.

I don't know if you updated the kernel for MoL. But remember that SyncRead error I had where I ended up recompiling MoL, trying to run it and got all these module errors?

It's here if you want to read the story again. BTW the SATA/USB/FW card looks available.

http://wap.amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=30839&forum=34&start=0&viewmode=flat&order=0

Well now it's all coming back. Looks like we never got to 2.6.31 or I'm not aware we did. I've had to locate all these depends such as curses. I got the same ZLib problem which is broken. My iostd.h is broken as sprintf() wants __snprintf_chk() which doesn't exist. And I don't have kernel headers for 2.6.31!

I did a search and didn't see any for download. Only references to packages. Do you have any headers lying around or a download link to some?

BTW I am using my Ubuntu Linux to compile it as I have my development tools setup there. This could cause a problem. Perhaps I should try my Debian to do it. But I have Ubuntu setup in menu to boot different kernels.

Good alternate to a serial cable! By the looks of it the code is crashing at the entry point. I wonder what the first instruction is? Something is wrong there.

Yes, I remember. Back then I managed to build MoL 0.9.73. Unfortunately I can't get it to build here anymore in a Debian Etch chroot on my A1SE due to problems with the kernel sources. I guess I have to give it a try on my A1XE.

You mean the VIA SATA/USB card?

I can't remember, where I compiled the 2.6.31 kernel. Maybe the sources are bit-rotting on one of the many Linux installations on my A1XE. But I tend towards building MoL for the 2.6.32 or 3.2 kernel. The 2.6.31 kernel is definitely EoL.

Could be. It looks like I also get errors here due ot the different tool-chains under Etch and Lenny.

BTW: I could test your latest Debian Install CD on my A1SE today. The install CD boots now. However there are still some issues:

- "All Controller" only disables DMA for the libata drivers. Is this intended?
- slow_down=1 is not set for the sata_sil driver. In fact it works with the 2.6.31 kernel, but will lock up the system with a 2.6.32 kernel.
- The IDE and libata kernel parameters are not added to the a1boot.conf file.
- The kernel image isn't copied to the special boot partition. Although I don't understand why at the moment.
